2 Claims.
. in a hammer formed of a pair of pivoted handles having respectively a, claw and driving head secured thereto, means on opposite sides of the pivot for the handles to provide a firm structure to permit driving or pulling of nails or the like. The invention consists of the new and useful construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein described and claimed, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention, as claimed.
vIn the'drawing:
Figure 1 is a detail side'felevation, partly broken away, of a tool constructed according to an embodiment of this invention; 3
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure-'1; j
Figure 3 is a fragmentarysideelevation of the tool used as a. square and rule; f, I
Figure 4 is a fragmentaryendelevation of the outer end of the device, showing the use of the device as a cutter; V
Figure 5 is a view, similar to Figure 4,'bu't showing the cutting blades in overlapping position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation p'fgthe device used as a square. v
Referring to the drawing the numeralsl nd 8 indicate a pair'of elongated handles whichare provided with cover members 9. The cover members 9 engage about three sides of the handle members 1 and 8, as shown in Figure 2, the handle members 1 and 8 being generally of rec tangular configuration in transverse section. The handle members 1 and 8 are pivotally secured together by a pivot bolt HI and the handle 1, at its forward or outer portion, is formed with an obtusely disposed flattened extension 21 which merges into a striking head I3. The handle member 8 is also flattened, as at 28, and this flatthe handle 8 and overlaps the flattened portion 21 of the handle 1.
The outer or forward end portion of the ex-- tension 28, has formed integral therewith, a claw M which is of conventional construction, and
provides a means for pulling nails or the like.
' The extension 28 has also formed integral therewith, an acutely disposed jaw H and the extension 21 also has formed integral therewith, and
disposediat an acute angle to the extension 21,
by providing an abutment 2|.
.complementary cutting jaw l9 which is ofiset tened portion extends obtusely to the length of The jaw I2 has formed integral therewith a from the side of the jaw l2, opposite from the cutting member I9, so that when the two jaws H and I2 are moved toward each other the cutting members IS and 19' will be disposed in overbers H and I2 are closed. When the jaw members H and |2 are open a space I8 is formed between the abutment 2| and the adjacent or" free end of the cutting member l9 and at the same time a space I8 is formed between the free end of the cutting member l9 and the abut ment 2|.
In order to provide a means whereby the two handles 1 and 8 may be held in spaced parallel relation to each other when the jaws H and |2 are closed, I have provided a right angularly disposed plate H which is secured, as by welding or the like, to the'handle |1 inwardly or rearwardly of the pivot member I0 and adjacent the outer end of the cover 9 carried by the handle 1. The plate l1 forms one side of a square and this plate extends on opposite sides of the handle 1 so as to thereby form a stop member 24 which extends inwardly from the handle 1 and is adapted to contact with the handle 8. A second projection 29 extends in overlapping position with respect to the handle 8, and provides an addiwhen the latter abuts against an edge of a piece of work. By providing the stop member 24 for holding the two handles 1 and 9 in spaced parallel relation, a resilient hand grip will be provided for the tool when it is used as a hammer.
The handle I on the inner side thereof, has secured thereto a rule l5 which is secured to the handle 1 by fastening members IS. The handle 9 also'has secured to the inner side thereof a second rule l5 similar to the rule l5. The rule I 5 is adaptedto be ps ed after :the manner shown in Fi ure -3zan 'w tb the aha dle 1 land 1. in a sufiiciently open position to expose the rule l5.
side of a piece of work e, and engages against the adjacent end d. In this manner the rule 1% can be used to determine any marking ,or 531 1 ting which might be desired with respectto the rule 15 so as mopermit cutting of :the .outer .por-
,tion to f the work 3b. v,
. 'Whene the tool is need for .cutting a :piece of metal .dr the dike, the handles :1 and Bare moved to an .open position, as shown in :Figure :3, and
a work piece 22 's-inserted gbetween-the .two cutting members .19 and 1,9, The handles 1 and .8
may .then he .moved toward each .other so :as
.cause' the cutting members 1&9 -;and 129', to move to the closed position as shown in Figure '5.
order :to provide a means whereby the tool may be used after the manner .of ,a wrench for turning either .a-nut or a-pipe, the inner sides of the handles 1 and 28, putwardly from the plate 11, .are formed with a .pairtof a-rcuatelydisposed series of serrations 2:5 and 21B. Theseserrations aholdthe nut/01' other article which maybe disposed between the-two handles i! and /8.
By providing a tool, as hereinbefore described,
with ,apair 10f pivoted #handles, and forming the In Figure 3 the handle 1 is disposed on the upper I article cutting jaws on the outer ends of the handles in such a manner that the cutting jaws overlap and abut each other, as shown in Figure 5, the tool will be. a firm tool when used'as a hammer, as where a nail is being driven by the head I3 or a nail or other article 'is being pulled by the claw M.
This tool will provide a combination tool structure for use by a carpenter, mechanic or the like,
eand wi l e im nat t e-ne essitye havin pa- -,rate h ir s tn'er kn -,gether, .a ,pair of confronting jaw members carried by said handles outwardly of said pivot -mea-ns, and overlapping cutters carried by said jaw members, each jaw member including an abutment at the inner end of its cutter and 01T- set from the latter 'for engagement with the terminal end of the :other cutter lto thereby'provide substantially rfiush sinner and LOlIbEI surfaces on said jaw members, said-abutment being disposed at right angles totheadjacent-decent1a lcutter.
2. In a tool of the .cilass described, a pair of elongated handles pivotally secured together by .a pivot bolt, and .eachahaving anextensionteach extension having .a partldisposed :at an acute an le thereto. providing a jaw, v{the twojaws ibeing complementary to each other, reach-jaw having formed integrally with the free end theneofa cutter blade, the said lblades ybeingeach rappositely offset from the respective jaw, eachjaw having an abutment provided bythe .said onsetting of its ablade, each blade having aflatinner face, the said :faces being ,disposed in confronting position ,whenthe jaws-are closed and the cutting edges, of the respective blades underlie one another.
