' This invention relates generally to locks and more particularly to the so-called Yale r cylinder I type of lock.
In the ordinary Yale lock, the key is inserted for aligning the plunger pins in the cylinder in order to free the cylinder for rotation and then an additional turning of the key by the operator is necessary in order to turn the cylinder in order to retract the locking bolt. The door must then be pushed inwardly to open it. The additional turning movement of the key is often difiicult, often necessitating the holding. of the knob of the door with one hand and the turning of the key with the other hand, making it necessary to have both hands free which is not always the case.
Also in the ordinary Yale locks,-the front or face of the plug member isexposed so that its movement may be seen and felt thereby assisting in the unauthorized manipulation of thelock;
Also in the ordinary lock of this type, a single rotatable cylinder is provided, which, while it affords a measure of segurity, is readily manipulated by a simple tool. 7
Furthermore in the ordinary locks, with which applicant is familiar, provision is made for opening the door from the inside of the door by turning a knob which retracts the locking bolt, but in order to hold the parts in open position it is necessary to slide a separate spring pressed latch Application February a, 194 Serial No. 520,849.

It is a primary object of my'invention to simplify the legitimate key opening operation of the Yale type lock by eliminating the necessity for manual turning of the cylinder and by substituting therefor an automatic turning-whereby the locking mechanism is moved to open position by the mere insertion of the key into the keyway of the cylinder and the door may beopened merely pushing inwardly on the door.
Another object is to. provide additional means of security by providing ,a second cylinder with plunger pins which must be manipulated before the locking mechanism isin position for opening.
A further object is to simplify the setting of the locking parts to open position from the inside of the door by providing means in common for moving the locking parts to open position and for holding said parts in moved open position.

The plug I9 is formed with anaxially'disposed keyway 25 which extends to the rear of the plug and communicates at the frontthereof with a key slot 26 formed in the plate 18. The upper wall of the plug, as viewed in Fig. 5,'is formed with spaced openings 21 which communicate with the keyway 25, and with which the recesses 22 in the upper cylinder Zllare' adapted to align; The lower wall of the plug is formed with spaced openings 28 which communicate with th keyway and with which the recesses 22 in the lower cylinder 2| are adapted to align. The aligned recesses and openings are adapted to receive the plunger pins 23.
The cylinders 20 and 2| are rotatable axially in the housing l1 and rotate in unison by means of a gear segment 29 fastened to the inner end of each cylinder and so positioned that their teeth 30 are continuously in mesh. The cylinders, plug and associated parts may beheld in position in the housing H by a washer 3| screwed or otherwise fastened to the inner edge of thehousing. 7
The casing in is fastened to the rear of the door and comprises an inner section 32 and an outer or cover section 33 in which are housed the locking bolt and mechanism for moving said bolt into and out of locking position and for holding said bolt out'of locking position. A curved guide plate 66 is formed on the outer edge of each of the arms 63 and 64, and the outer end of arm 63 is formed with an enlarged offset portion 61. The arms 63 and E4 loosely straddle the hollow post 34 and slide on the arms 56 and 5| of the latching frame 46 guided .bythe curved plates 66 which partially encirclethe arms 50 and 5|, and the rigid nose 65 when in latching position I is disposed behind the lug 58 on the pivotal bolt thereby preventing movement of said bolt.
Extending centrally through the hollow post 34 is an elongated flat bar 63, the inner end of which is fastened to a projecting lug G9 fastened to the upper cylinder 20. In passing throughthe post, the bar passes through a slotted transverse wall 1|! formed on the interior of the post, so that upon turning of the post the wall it! turns the bar 68.
A knob or handle H is secured to the outer end of a spindle .12 which is journalled in the wall of the opening of the cover 33. The outer end of post 34 and the outer end of bar 68 extend into saidspindle. I The spindle 72 projects inwardly of the cover 33 and on its inner end adjacent said cover is fastened a cam member 73 formed with shoulders hi on each side and an enlarged offset portion 15 centrally of said shoulders.
In using the lock, a "key 16 with duplicate or opposite working faces -is inserted through the key slot and into the keyway' in the plug i9. The upper operating or working face of the .key moves the upper plunger pins .23 outwardly or upwardly and the lower operating face moves the plunger pins in the lower cylinder 2| outwardly or downwardly simultaneously. Thus the plunger pins in "the z pper cylinder 2B. are moved into alignment with each other and the plunger pins in the lower cylinder 2| are moved .into alignment at -the same time. 'When the pins are thus aligned the cylinders 2'0 and '21 are free to rotate. The 'spring- 45 immediately goes into action turning the member 33' and associated parts including 'the hollow. post 33 to which it is secured. Rotation of the post turns the bar 68 and this movement of the bar istransmitted 'to the upper cylinder 20 .andt'urn'ing o'fthe upper cylinder is transmitted to the lower cylinder 2| through the intermeshing segments 29. Each cylinder is cut away as indicated at '23 .to permit removal of the/key after the cylinders are turned.
Upon theturning of the hollow .pos't :34, the rlug 44 on collar 43 is-carr ied around into engagement wi'tha pivoted .pawl 11 and moves said pawl away from the inner end of :bar 53 of latching frame 46, said pawl normallyholding-said frame against movement.- The :paw-l is urged into holding position by a spring '18. Now when the door is swung back or returned for closing, the pivoted bolt 55 being projected I strikes the keeper l3 which causes the latching frame 46 and associated-parts to slide inwardly. Upon inward movement of this frame, its inwardly extending bar 53 engages the finger 40 on the freely mounted-washer 39 and simultaneously the nose portion 31 on cam 35 engages the opposite lug 42 on said washer, which engage- 'ment turns the hollow post 34 and associated parts including the long bar 68, which in turn moves the cylinders and 2| bringing their re-, cesses into alignment with the openings'in plug 19 and thus permitting the plunger pins to assume their normal interlocking positions.
Continued closing movement of the door brings the pivoted nose beyond the striker portion of the keeper into alignment with the socket portion of the keeper at which time the coiled spring 8| forces the latching frame 46 outwardly. At the same time, a small coiled spring 83 which has one end fixed to the nose portion 31, as indicated at B4, and its other end fixed to the sliding latch offset portion 61 urges and forces said slide latch with its fixed nose 55 into interlocking position with the lug 58 on the pivoted nose 55;
The locking elements are now in locking position.
Provision is made for opening the door and look from the inside. This is accomplished by first tilting the pawl 11 out of the way of the bar 53 of the sliding frame 46, by means of the lever 19. The knob H is then turned carrying the cam 13 around with it. v This cam is so disposed that its shoulders 14 are opposed to the lug 52 and the outwardly projecting part of bar 53,:
and upon the turning of the camone of its shoulders 14 engages either said lug 52 or projection 53 and slides the latching frame 45 inwardly moving the locking bolt or nose 55 away from the keeper l3 so that the door may be opened. Continued turning of said-cam by means of the knob II will cause the engaging shoulder 14 to move around free of the engaged lug or projection and bring the oifset central portion 15 of the cam into a position between and inv ento be swung into the aligned grooves of the pins to hold said pins against movement. The free end of the bar is formed witha cam noseportion 88, which cam portion is positioned in, the path of movement of the key 89. Upon insertion of said key the entering edge of the key engages the cam portion 88 and moves it away from the plunger pins 85 permitting the key to move inwardly toalign the pins as is. usual. A spring 9llmay be provided to urge the bar intointerlocking position with the pins. By reasonof'this bar 81, it is impossible to reach the pins for manipulating them. 1 i
It will be noted that the. pawl member 11 that holds the sliding locking bolt 46 from moving inwardly is positioned in the rear of the casing so that it will be impossible to reach it with a tool to pick it, and it would be futile to work on the pivoted nose of the lock to force it inwardly in view of the holding pawl.
Itv will also be noted that the cam member I3 which is used for opening the look from the inside also serves to hold the part in open position. 1
It will also be noted that there are no movable parts on the escutcheon plate [8 which might be seen or felt as intheordinarylock. I
It will also be noted that it is not sufiicient'to pick the, plunger pins .in one cylinder but that such pins would also have tobe picked'in the other cylinder before the lock cylinders could be rotated.
I claim:
1. A cylinder lock including a rotatable cylinder, radially movable plunger pins in said cylinder, a plug having a keyway and openings for receiving said pins in interlocking position to prevent rotation of said cylinder, a key for moving said pins out of interlocking relationship upon insertion thereof into the keyway,
a locking bolt operatively connected to said cylinder and means for automatically'rotating said cylinder upon the movement of said pins out' of interlocking position whereby said locking bolt is adapted to be moved out of interlocking position.
2. A cylinder lock including a rotatable cylinder, radially movable plunger pins in said cylinder, a plug having a keyway and opening for receiving said pins in interlocking position to prevent rotation of said cylinder, a key for moving said pins out of interlocking relationship upon insertion thereof into the keyway, a locking bolt operatively connected to said cylinder and spring actuated means for automatically rotating said cylinder upon the movement of said pins out of interlocking position whereby said locking bolt is adapted to be moved out of interlocking relationship.
3. A lock of the kind described, in combination, a rotatable cylinder, radially movable whereby upon movement of said pins out of inspring means and moves the sliding latch out of latching engagement with said pivotal nose poron, ,t l
