This invention relates to packaging machinery and more particularly to apparatus for closing and sealing fibre or cardboard boxes or like containers (hereinafter referred to as containers") of the type comprising a tubular body portion and end portions formed by first folding extensions of two opposed sides of the body portion (hereinafter referred to as "inside flaps) at right angles to the sides of the body portion and then completing the end portions by folding the remaining extensions (hereinafter referred to as outside flaps") on to the inside flaps.
The invention is particularly concerned with the type of apparatus in which containers are fed. to a flap-folding and gluing device which operates first to fold inwardly the inside flaps and then to fold outwardly the outside flaps in preparation for the application of glue. In this type of apparatus (hereinafter referred to as the "type described"), it is usual to provide for adjustment of the apparatus to accommodate containers of various sizes. When dealing with containers in which the inside flaps when folded-are separated by a gap exposing the contents of the.
container, it is very desirable that the film of glue applied to the outside flaps should not extend over the full length of the flaps in order to avoid the portion of the outside flaps extending over the gap between the inside flaps being stuck to the contents oi the containers. To this end, therefore, the gluing device is so arranged that, during the' passage of the outside flaps through the gluing device, the glue-applying roller is moved clear of the flaps. by means o1 a rotating cam,operating in timed relation to the movement oi' the container through the gluing device, so as to. allow the portions oi the outside flaps corresponding to the gap between the inside ilaps to pass through the gluing device with out maldng contact with the glue-applying roller.

Again, the length of the inside iiaps, which of course determines the gap between the flaps and, therefore, the length of the portion or the outside ilap on which no glue must be applied, may vary considerably over the whole range of containers. Whilst, therefore, the gluing device as a whole is adjustable to accommodate containers of different width and of dlflerent height, no provision is made for varying the length of the portion of the outside flap on which no glue is to be applied.
It is an object of the present invention, therefore, to provide an apparatus of the type described in which, for a given range of sizes of container, the gluing device is adjusted for a given size of container, as regards the length of the portion of the outside flaps on which no glue is to be applied, automatically with the adjustment of the apparatus to accommodate the width of that container.
According to the present invention, therefore, there is provided an apparatus of the type described wherein the gluing device ls provided with a rotatable cam member consisting of a plurality oiicam surfaces arranged on a common support in such a manner that as the apparatus is adjusted to accommodate the width of a given container the cam surface appropriate to that container becomes operative.
Usually, in the type of apparatus with which the present invention is concerned, the upper and lower outside flaps oi the containers are glued at the same time, there being one gluing device for each outside flap. It will be understood that, in such a case, each gluing device is controlled the inside flaps in the manner described above, while the outer of the outside flaps at each end of the container may be glued all over so as to form a good seal by substituting cylindrical surfaces for the corresponding cam surfaces. Again, if any container within the range is of the type in which the inside flaps are together equal in area to the end of the container and arranged to abut in the end of the container, and there is thus no necessity to leave a portion of the outside flaps free of glue, the corresponding cam surfaces in each case may be replaced by cylindrical surfaces.
It will thus be seen that, by the use of the present invention, the apparatus can be set to perform the requisite operations on a range of containers of diflerent dimensions, different settings for different containers being brought about merely by the adjustment of the apparatus to accommodate the width of the containers.
By way of example, the invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:

Referring to Figure 1, containers ii are fed through the apparatus by means of pusher bars I! carried by a pair of chains i! which are driven through chain and sprocket gearing ll from a combined reduction gear and motor ll. During the passage of the containers Ii through the apparatus, they first pass through a folding device generally indicated by reference numeral H, which in this case is of the type described in British Patent Specification No. 536,069, which folds inwardly the upper inside flaps It (the lower inside flaps having been previously folded inwardly) then through ploughs it which plough the outside flaps it of the container outwardly Patent Specification No. 541,421, so that it is only necessary to describe in detail those parts of the apparatus with which the present invention is particularly concerned. The upper gluing devices 22 are substantially identical in construction and are each carried by a bracket 28 slidably mounted on a pair of shafts 21 carried by a pair of brackets 28, and their lateral adjustment is brought about by means of a rotatable screwed shaft 29 mounted in the brackets 28 and engaging the bracket 28, the screwed shaft 22 being driven by chain and sprocket gearing 2! from a similar screwed shaft 32 which, in turn, is driven through suitable gearing from a motor 83. Mounted in bearings 38 and 39 is a glue roller shaft H to which is attached a glue roller 42 arranged to dip into a glue bath 0, the bearing 38 being formed in a bracket ll depending from the bracket 20 and the bearing 39 in a downward extension of the bracket 26. The glue bath 43 is supported by a pair of platforms 40 extending respectively from the depending bracket 44 and a further bracket i! also depending from the bracket 26. Freely mounted on the glue roller shaft ii is a pair of frames 48 arranged to carry rotatable shafts 4| 7 and 51, iii, the intermediate gears 58 being freely mounted on the frames 4!. The shaft I is driven from a shaft il slidably mounted in bearlugs 02 and 02, depending respectively from the bracket 28 and the bracket 41, by means of a gearattached to the shaft BI and engaging the gear I4. flhe shaft II is driven through a pair of spiral gears 68 and 01, the gear 68 being slidably mounted on the shaft BI and provided with a feather key while the gear 6! is secured to a vertical shaft If. The apparatus is adjustable as regards the width of the container and its height so as to be capable of accommodating containers of various siaeaandthegeneralconstruotionandoperaticn ofthistype of apparatusisdescrimdinBritish driven by a further pair of spiral gears ll and H, the gear Ii being mounted on ashaft 12 carried in a pair of bearings 12 in the main frames ll of the machine, and theshaft 12 being driven by chain and sprocket gearing I! from the motor is. The shaft it is suppmted at its upper end in a bearing II and at its lower end in the bearing sleeve 11- by which it is driven by means of a feather key and which pair of gears 84 and 05, the gear 04 being slidabiy mounted on the shaft II and provided with a feather key, and the gear being secured to the shaft 93. Secured to the shaft 93 is a cam member 98 arranged to co-operate with a cam roller 91 ,mounted on the shaft ii. The cam member 95 is provided with a number of cam surfaces 98 each of which becomes operative as the apparatus is adjusted to accommodate the width of the container appropriate to that cam surface.
It will thus be seen that the whole of the gluing device is adjusted bodily in a vertical direction, by reason of its attachment to the brack t 28, as that bracket is adjusted to accommoda containers of different height, the drive from the motor I6 continuing to operate due to the slide able mounting of the shaft 88 in the sleeve ll. During the adjustment of the apparatus to accommodate containers of different width, it will be seen that, as the bracket 26 is moved laterally, by rotation of the screwedshaft 29, the bracket 26 will cause the gluing device to move bodily in one direction or the other according as the apparatus is being adjusted to accommodate a narrower or wider container, and it will be seen that during this movement the cam roller 91 will move from the cam surface 90 for the time being,
in operation to the cam surface 98 appropriate to the new container to be accommodated, and since the shaft is slidably mounted and moves bodily with the gluing device, it is necessary to prevent the gear 94 from moving with it. Accordingly, the gears 94 and 86 which, as described above, are slidably mounted on the shaft BI, are retained in position on the shaft 6! by means of a pin 99 depending from a retaining plate lIiI attached to the bracket 28,'the pin 99 engaging a groove in the boss of the gear 36.
The length of each of the cam surfaces 80 and its circumferential disposition are designed to suit a particular container, and the timing of the cam shaft 53 in relation to the conveyor chain I3 is such that the cam surface 88 for the time being in operation will cause the glue-applying roller 53 to be lifted out of contact with the outside flaps of the container during the passage of a portion of the outside flaps, corresponding to the gap between the inside flaps. Past the glueapplying roller.
The lower gluing devices 23, like the devices 22, are identical in construction and are arranged for lateral adjustment in a similar manner to the gluing devices 22, the gluing device generally being slidabiy mounted on a guide shaft I02 ecured to the frames 14, the lateral movement being brought about by a screwed shaft I03 driven, like the screwed shafts 29 and 32, through suitable gearing from the motor 33, the screwed shaft I03 engaging a frame I05 of the gluing device. As shown in Figure 5, the lower gluing devices differ from the upper ones in that a glueapplying roller I04 is mounted directly in a glue bath I05 and supported in bearings I01 carried by a frame I08 freely mounted on the guide shaft I02, The drive to the glue-applying roller I04 is from the'shaft I2 by a pair of gear I08 and I I I, the gear II I being freely mounted on a blank portion of the screwed shaft I03, and further gears H4, H5 and Ill, the gear II4 being attached to the gear III.
The lower-gluing device is provided with a cam member IIH, similar to the cam member 98, and imilarly provided with a number of cam surfaces H9, arranged to co-operate with a cam roller I2I freely mounted on the frame I08, and since the glue-applying roller I04, in this case, has to fall away from the flaps, the cam surfaces II! are in the formof depressions in the cam member IIU.
As in the case of the cam surfaces 08, each cam surface H8 is designed and positioned on the cam member I I8 for a particular size of container, and the cam member H8 is mounted on the shaft I2 and timed in relation to the conveyor chain I3 in a similar manner to the timing of the cam shaft 93.
In order to maintain the drive to the glu-applying rolier I04 during the pivotal movement of the frame I08 as the cam roller I2I drops on to the cam surface H9, the gear H6 is mounted on a stud I22 arranged to slide in a slot I23 in the frame I08, the stud I22 being connected with the shaft I03 by means of a link I24.
It will thus be seen that once the range of sizes of container has been determined and the cam surfaces 98 and IIS designed accordingly, the setting of the gluing devices to suit any container within the range is effected automatically as the apparatus is adjusted to accommodate the width of that container. The invention is particularly useful, therefore, in the above type of packaging apparatus where the adjustment of the apparatus for the accommodation of containers of different height and width is brought about by the central controlling apparatus described in the above-mentioned Specification No, 541,421.
I claim:
1. Apparatus of the type described including a support, a bracket mounted on said support for lateral movement with respect thereto, a gluing roller having up and down movement on said bracket, a rotary cam member carried by said support, a cam roller connected with said gluing roller, said cam member having a plurality of cam surfaces with each of which said cam roller cooperates according to the lateral adjustment of said cam roller to elevate the gluing roller to vary the time the latter remains out of glue-applying position, and means to cause the lateral movement of said bracket so as to cause a corresponding lateral adjustment of said cam roller.
2. Apparatus of the type described, comprising a support, a bracket mounted on said support for lateral movement with respect thereto, a gluing roller mounted on said bracket for movement in up and down directions, a cam member rotatably mounted on said support and arranged periodically to engage means laterally movable with said gluing roller for causing said gluing roller to move out of glue-applying position in timed relation to the movement of the containers past said gluing roller, and means for adjusting said bracket laterally to vary the lateral position of said gluing roller to suit containers of difierent width, said cam member having a plurality of cam surfaces, each appropriate to a iven size of container, each cam surface co-operatlng with said means for moving said gluing roller out of glue-applying position, according to the lateral adjustment of said gluing roller to suit the width of said size of container, to move said gluing roller out of glue-applying position for a time appropriate to that container.
3. Apparatus of the type described, comprising a support, a bracket mounted on said support for lateral movement with respect thereto, a gluing roller mounted on said bracket for movement in up and down directions, a. cam member rotatably mounted on said support and arranged periodically to engage means, laterally movable with said gluing roller, for causing said gluing roller to move out of glue-applying position in timed relation to the movement of the containers past said gluing roller, and means for adjusting said brackct laterally to vary the lateral position of said gluing roller to suit containers 0! diilferent'width, said cam member having a plurality of cam surfaces formed integrally therewith, each cam surface co-operating with said means for moving said gluing roller out of glue-applying position, according to the lateral adjustment of said gluing roller to suit the width of said size of container, to move said gluing roller out of glueapplying position for a time appropriate to that container.
4. Apparatus oi the type described, comprising a supp r a bracket mounted on said support (or lateral movement with respect thereto, a gluing roller mounted on said bracket for movement in up and down directions, a cam roller freely mounted on said bracket, a cam member rotatably mounted on said support and arranged periodically to engage said cam roller and by such engagement cause said gluing roller to move out of glue-applying position in timed relation to the movement oi the containers past said gluing roller, and means for adJusting said bracket laterally to vary the lateral position of said gluin roller to suit containers oi difl'erent width, said cam member having a plurality oi cam surfaces, each appropriate to a given size or container, each cam surface 'co-operating with said cam roller, according to the lateral adjustment of said gluing roller to suit the width of said size oi container. to move said gluing roller out of glueapplying position for a time appropriate to that container.
5. In a packaging apparatus of the type described, a support, a bracket mounted on said support ior lateral movement with respect thereto, a gluins roller mounted on said bracket for movement in up and down directions, a cam mem. ber rotatably mounted on said support and arranged periodically to engage means, laterally movable with said gluing roller, for causing said gluing roller to move out of glue-applying position in timed relation to the movement of the containers past said gluing roller, and means for adjusting said bracket laterally to vary the lateral position of said gluing roller to suit containers of different width, said cam member having a plurality oi cam surfaces, each appropriate to a given size org container, each cam surface cooperating with said means for moving said gluing roller out of glue-applying position, according to the lateral adjustment oi said gluing roller to suit the width or said size oi container, to
' raise said gluing roller out of glue-applying position for a time appropriate to that container.
8.
