To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK A. DU'NHAM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Sole or Welt Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.

or welt trimmers for shoe-makers7 use'. employing a cutter composed ot' a notched disk sharp ened at one side of thef'notch to form a cutting-edge, and a guard for the cutter, having a lip or nipple arranged to bring the leather to be removed in the trimming operation directly across the edge of the cutter, as shown in Letters Patent ofthe United States granted to Isaac A. Dunham, September 22, 1857, No. 18,237.

The invention has for its object, tirst, to provide certain improvements in the guard when the same is made detachable from the tool, whereby the cost of manufacturing said guard is reduced to the minimum and perfect interchangeability is secured, so that one guard can be readily' substituted for another without the necessity of especial adjustment of the substituted guard to the tool.

The invention also has for its object to provide certain improvements in the stock which supports the cutter and guard, whereby the cutter is enabled to be sharpened while in place on the stock, the guard being removed, and whereby an extended bearing-surface for the guard is aEorded.

To these ends my invention consists in the improvements which' I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a rear view of a sole or welt trimmer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front view with the guard removed. Fig. 4. represents a section on linex m, Fig. 3.4 Fig. 5 represents a view of the blank from which the guard is formed; and Figs. 6 and 7 represent, respectively, side and edge views of the guard.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the-figures.

The cutter is preferably made ot a notched disk ot' sheet-steel, dished to form a marginal bevel on its back side, and sharpened at one side of the notch to form a cutting-edge on the beveled back, said cutter being secured to the stock by a central screw, d.

In carrying out my invention I construct the guard in a single piece of sheet metal, snch as iron or steel, and give the same its desired form, including the lip c', by means ot' suitable dies. In forming the guard I Iirst stamp out a flat blank from a sheet of metal of the form shown in Fig. 5. I then form a s'lot or oritice, e, in the base l of the guard, offset the outer portion, 2, from the portion l to form a shoulder, 3, and turn a portion ot' the outer edge to form the lip c. The slot e is arranged to receive the screw d, which secures the cutter to the stock, said screw clamping the guard against the side of the cutter. The cutter is attached to the rear side of the stock, or the side that is held away from the workman operating the tool, and the guard is applied, as shown, to the front side ot' the cutter. The shoulder 3 is formed to t closely against a portion of the edge of the stock and serve as a gage or guide to bear upon the bottom of a sole when the edge thereof is being trimmed by the cutter. This shoulder, by its bearing upon the edge ot' the stock, also serves to steady the guard and prevent it from turning on the screw d. The lip c hasthe same func.

It will be seen that by constructing the guard from sheet metal, as described, and adapting it to be secured by the same screw that secures the cutter, I am enabled to manufacture the guard rapidly and at very small cost, and make every guard practically a facsimile of all others manufactured by the same set of dies. It follows, therefore, that perfectinterchangeability is secured, so that one guard may be substituted for another without requiring any fitting or adaptation. The shoulder 3 and-lip c' impart strength and stiness to the guard, so that it cannot be easily bent.

I prefer to form the stock with two opposite inclines, M', at its upper edge, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and bevel the outer side of the stock down to these inclines, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The incline fi gives an unobstructed IOO space for the oblique movement of a le or other tool in sharpening the cuttingedge of the cutter, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4, so that by removing the guard the eutter may be sharpened while in place in the stock, thelatter, With its handle, enabling the cutter to be firmly held while being sharpened. The incline t" is formed to furnish a bearing for the shoulder 3 of the guard. The side of the stock which bears against the concave side of the cutter is formed to tit closely against said concave side, as shown in Fig. 4, thus affording an extended bearing for the cutter.

I do not clailn, broadly, a detachable guard in a sole or welt trimmer, as I am aware that a detachable guard has been secured to the stock of the tool by a separate screw from that which secures the cutter.

I claim as my invention- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a lipped guard for sole or Welt trimmers, composed ofa plate of sheet metal having a slotted base, 1, adapted to be clamped by a screw against the side of the cutter, a shoulder, 3, an offset portion, 2, and a lip, c', formed by turning a portion of the outer edge of the plate, as set forth.

2. In a sole or welt trimmer, the combination, with the notched cutter and its stock, of 3c the detachable guard, slotted at its base to receive the attaching-screw which secures the cutter to the stock, having an offset portion, 2, and a shoulder, 3, projecting over portions of the cutter and stock, and provided with the turned lip on its outer edge, as set forth.

3. In a sole or welt trimmer having a de tachable guard, the combination of the notched cutting-blade b and the stock a, having the incline z', formed as shown, to afford an unobstructed space for the oblique movement of a sharpening-tool on all parts of the edge of the cutter when the guard is removed, the blade being adapted to be attached to the stock independently of the guard, as set forth.

4. 1n a sole or welt trim mer having a notched and lished blade, formed as described, the combination, with said blade, of a shank having a seat formed to fit the concave side of the blade, as set forth.
