Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. COSTELLO AND ARTHUR H. HALL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO ALFRED'H. ANDREWS, HERBERT L. ANDREWS, AND THOMAS S. HAYDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
k STOP-HINGE FOR SCHOlOL-DESKS.4
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,;782, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed March 15, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom, 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, '1. H. Cos'rELLo and A. H. HALL, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Adjustable Stop- Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a hinge for the lids or leaves of writing-desks, stoves, and like articles of furniture so constructed that such lids or leaves shall have any number of automatic lock -stops during their upward revolution upon the axial -bolts of the hinge, and may be stopped at any desired angle with a horizontal line, and then, after reaching the highest point in a semirevolution, to be returned to the lowest point without stop or obstruction. The means and devices which we have invented to accomplish this object will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our hinge; Fig. 2, an edge elevation of the same, partly in section; Figs. 3 and 4, detail views,
and Fig. 5 a detail view of sliding tumbler D.
A indicates the part or leaf of the lhinge which is stationary and attached to the body of the desk; B, the revolving leaf attached to the lid of the same. e' is a headed bolt, which connes the parts together, and upon which the leaf B turns. A screw-nut upon the point of the bolt prevents the leaf B from coming oi. l
The stationary part A is provided with a transverse recess, E, for the sliding tumbler D to move back and forth in on the bolt e, and the recess and tumbler are dovetailed correspondingly in form, so that the tumbler shall be conined to horizontal movement only in the recess.
The parts A and B are provided with holes h and h for the bolt e, and. the leaf B is provided with lugs b and c, arranged in a nearly straight line w/ith hole h. These lugs are designed to operate the sliding tumbler D by means of the projections a and ton the face of the same. The tumbler is also provided with slot d, which allows and at the same time limits its play in its recess in part A upon the bolt e, and with notches y and y for the reception of lug b. Now, when the outer end, B', of leaf B is vertically under the bolt e, the lug b will be on the left of projection t, Fig. 5, and when the leaf is raised the lug b will strike against the projection a on its left and sloping side and force the tumbler D so far to the right that the bottom of the notch y will be immediately under the lug, so that if the motion of the partB were then reversed the bottom of the notch would stop and lock the part B against downward movement. And so, in like manner, if the part B were again raised, the tumbler would be driven still farther to the right by the lug b, and the second notch, y, would be brought under it and lock it against downward movement; but when the outer end, B', of leaf B is raised to nearly a vertical position over the pivot-bolt e, the lug c will have impinged against the righthand side of projecting bar t and driven the tumbler back to the left, so that upon reversing the movement of part B the lug b will pass down on the right-hand side of projection a and strike projection t, drive the tumbler to the right, and return to its original position without hinderance of any kind.
In the drawings but two notches are shown; but it is manifest that the number may be increased at will.
vWe do not claim herein the combination, substantially as described, of the part A, tumbler D, provided with slot d, the part B, and the connecting-pivot e, as and for the purpose set forth, the same being claimed by us in our pending application for a patent for the same iiled by us on the 17th day of September, 1880.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, substantially as described, of the part A, the sliding tumbler D, having lug a and notches y and y', the part B, having lug b, and the connecting-pivot e, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, as described, of the part A, the sliding tumbler D, having notches having hole h and lugs b c, and the connecty y', lug a, and projection t, the part B, having-pivot e, the parts being combined and aring lugs b and c, and the connecting-pivot e, ranged as set forth.
as and for the purpose set forth. THOMAS H. COSTELLO.
3. The adjustable stop-hinge consisting 0f ARTHUR HENRY HALL.
the part A, having recess E and the hole h', Witnesses:
the tumbler D, having slot d, notches y y', B. F. CLARK,
and lugs or projections a and t, the part B, A. M. STOUT.
