Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH E. CARVER AND EDWIN H. KEITH, OF BRIDGEWATER, MASSA- CHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO THE EAGLE COTTON GIN COMPANY.
COTTON-GIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,776, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed September 23, 1880. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
- ton-gins havingtwo seed-boards and intended for separating the hulls from the cotton as well as ginning it.
The object of our invention is to provide a means for gaining ready access to the exterior and the interior roll-boxes without the necessity of removing or displacing any fixed portion of the gin.
Our invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the arms which connect the outer seed-board to the frame, the said arms being carried outward over the edge of the head until the inside of each arm is flush with the inside of the head, and extends on the same plane to the lugs to which the ends of the arms are pivoted. By means of this construction and arrangement the outer seed board can be readily lifted up and thrown back, so'as to allow the lid of the interior roll-box to be raised and to admit of the interior seed-board being adjusted as conveniently as if the outer seed-board were entirely taken off the gin.
In cotton-gins of this class, as heretofore constructed with swinging seed-boards, the arms by which the latter are connected to the machine are entirely within the head of the machine, thus rendering the interior difficult of access.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a portion of a gin embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation, of the same.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
A is the head or end of the breast of the gin. B represents a portion of the frame. 0
is the outer seed-board. D is the inner seedboard, held in place by bolts 11 01 passing through slots in the seed-board and in the heads, by means of which the seed-board can be adjusted to any desired position. I is the' interior roll-box, on the top of which is hinged the lid H.
K is the outer roll-box.
M is the lining of the outer seed-board. N is a metal plate or lambrequin provided with teeth on its lower end, as shown in Fig.2, and is rendered adjustable toward or from the toothed roll G by means of a set-screw, O. E is one of a series of ribs attached at each end to the frame, and between which ribs the saws F rotate. L is the arm, there being one at each end of the gin, by which the outer seed-board, O, is connected with the head, being pivoted in a lug, P, on the outer side of the head. The arm L extends to the bottom of the seed-board G, and is attached to the latter by the flange e, as shown in Fig. 2, on the inside of the outer head, A. The flange 0 extends up on the inside of the head A to the point where the curve of the arm L commences. Just below the same point a flange is formed on the outside of the arm L, and the latter curves outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and is pivoted at the end in a lug, P, on the top of the head and outside of the frame.
The change of direction of the flange efrom the inside to the outside, over the edge of the head, is shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The change of form of the arm L from the upright portion to the horizontal part is shown in section at a and b, Fig. 1.
It will thus be seen that by the peculiar construction and arrangement of the arms and their attachment to the seed-board the latter can be opened to admit of ready access to the interior of the gin, and at the same time allow the lid H to be raised without obstruction, for gaining access to the interior of the roll-box and for the adjustment of the seedboard, as readily as if the outer seed-board were entirely removed from the gin.
What we claim as our invention is- The arms L, constructed with aflange, e, on one side of the perpendicular portion, with an offset at or near the curved part, and a flange -on the opposite side or the horizontal portion, I
as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. E. CARVER. E. H. KEITH.
