To @ZZ whom 2'15 may con-cern f Be it known that l, GEORGE TN. GBRYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambria, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, have invented anew and useful Mill, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for crushing and grinding corn on the cob, or other cereals, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a machine of this character the crushing member of which cooperates with means for facilitating the reduction of the material, said means being adjustable so as to regulate the time required for directing the material from the crushing to the grinding mechanism.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter dcscribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from. the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 4 is an inner elevation of said blade and the adjacent portion of the wall of the crusher casing.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates the base frame of the mill, the same being provided with an end cross strip 2 on which is mounted a bearing member 4 which constitutes an extension of the casing 6 of the crushing mechanism, this casing having flat parallel side walls 7 one of which is formed with crossed slots 8 adjacent each end for the reception of fastening bolts 9. These bolts extend from the end portions of an inclined blade 10 and it will be apparent, by referring to Fig. 4, that by shifting the bolts 9 within the slots 8, the blade 10 can be held either horizontal or can be adjusted with either of its ends elevated.

A revoluble crushing element 34 is secured t-o the. shaft 28 and has outstanding teeth 35 extending spirally around the shaft. rlhese teeth'are adapted to travel close to the free longitudinal edgeof the blade l0 and coperate therewith for the purpose of crushing material supplied to the casing 6. f
One end of the casing 6 discharges through Va ring 39 secured to the center of one side of a drum 40 which is ixedly mounted upon the base l and has a stationary circular grinding member 42 mounted therein, there being a circular opening 43 at the center of said grinding member and registering with the passage through the ring 39. A revoluble grinding member 44 is secured to the shaft 28 and is adapted to rotate within the drum 40. The adjoining or active faces of the grinding members may be formed with any suitable arrangement of burs and mounted on the shaft 28 and bearing againstthe middle portion of the revoluble grinding member 44, is a sleeve 47 carrying a conveying blade or worm 48 whereby material, when discharged into the opening 43, will be directed by said blade or worm toward lie space between the two grinding memers.
C'obs with corn thereon to be ground are deposited in the hopper and fall onto the crusher 34 where the teeth 35 engage the cobs and carry them downwardly in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, these co-bs being thoroughly ground upon the toothed concaved plate 11 and being nally brought upwardly against the blade lO. Thus the material will be quickly reduced and will be gradually fed to the opening in the ring 39 and thence to the opening 43. At this point the blade 48 will engage the material and force it against the revoluble grinding element 44 where said material will be free to gravitate into the space between the two grinding members. Before passing out from between these two members, the material will be reduced to a finely comminuted state after which it will be discharged into the drum 40.
Attention is called to the fact that the blade 10 is adjustably mounted. When the blade has its cutting edge parallel with the axis of rotation of the shaft 28, it only serves to facilitate the crushing of the material acted on by the teeth 55 of the Crusher. However, should it be desired to feed the material more rapidly to the grinding members 42 and 44, that end of the blade 10 nearest the ring 39 is elevated While'the other end of the blade is lowered. After securing the blade in this manner, it will be seen that the material, When carried toward the blade 10 by the teeth 35, will be deflected along said blade and toward the opening in the ring 39. Thus the operation of grinding material will be greatly accelerated.
Vhat is claimed is l. In a mill, the combination with a casing including a concave, of a shaft mounted for rotation, a revoluble crushing element mounted on the shaft, a blade secured to and extending longitudinally of one Wall of the casing and cooperating with said element, and means for raising 0r lowering either or both ends of the blade.
