Reversible Screw Driver. No. 236,738. Patented Jan. 18 1881.
MPEIERS, PNOTO-LITHOGRAP-RER, wAsmNm'uN, D G.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WALES, OF NEWTON, ASSIGNOR TO AUBURNDALE WATCH COMPANY, OF WESTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
REVERSIBLE SCREW-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 236,738, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed September 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Writes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Screw-Drivers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a view, in perspective, of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, and Fig. 4 views showing the invention as adapted to other tools.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of reversible tools having a tool proper pivoted in a bifurcated handle, so that either end of the tool may be turned to position for use; and it has for its object to provide an improved means for holding the tool in position, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Ais the bifurcated handle, holding between its jaws the blade of tools B, which is pivoted, at or near its middle, into the lower ends of the jaws a. The blade B is held rigidly in position by means of a sleeve or collar, U, that slides on the lower part of the handle, and which is prevented from coming entirely off by the projecting ends of the pivot b, which acts as a stop or rest for the sleeve.
When it becomes necessary to reverse or turn the blade around, the collar is slid up toward the top of the handle past the slit, thus allowing the blade or tool to be changed; then the sleeve is slid back into position to hold the tool ready for use.
The pivot may be made removable, so that one handle can be used for avariety of blades or tools, if desired.
It is obvious that the device can be used for a large number of tools of different kinds where it is desirable to have two sizes of the same implement in constant use and at convenient command, or two implements in the same handle, such as a screw-driver and gimlet combined, when it is necessary to use one tool after the other.
I am aware that a reversible tool pivoted to a handle having a sliding spring-clamp to grasp one end of the tool and hold it in position has been heretofore used, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a reversible tool consisting of a cylindrical shank provided WVILLIAM ATHERTON WALES.
