Description

PATENTED MAY 14, 1907.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KASMUS MADSEN, Ol? HARTFORD, CNNEC'IIUUT.
COMBINATlON-TOOL.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed February 23, 1907. Serial No. 358,803.
To ril/ whom, it Irl/tty concern:
Be it known that l, lilxsMUs MAnsnN, a subject ofelknniarir, residing at Hartford, in the county ol'` Hartford, in tho State of Cow noeticut, have invented certain new and useful improvemonts in a Combinationlool, oi which they 'following is a specification.
'M v invention relates to a combination tool comprising a wrench and. a series of screw' drivers or other somewhat similarly shaped tool implements, and has for its special obg'oot the providing of a teiescopie Wrench, that is, a wrench in whieh the shank oi, the movable jai-v is telescopcd within the handle of the stationary jaw, with a telescopic toolholder carrying a number oi' various size screw driver blades or other flat shanked tools, all of which may be inelosed within the holder and thus looked Within the handle, and any one oi'v which may be opened and locked into operative position. when the tool is to be used as a screw driver or for the special uso=to which the projected blade is designed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention Figure 1 is a plan view ol my improved wrench, the screw drivers or tool blades being closed. Fig. 2 is en end view of the same. F ig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, except that one of the screw drivers or tool blades is open. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blade holder, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the saine. Fig. 6 is an end view of the movable jaw of the wrench.
Similar letters of reference designate oorresponding parts in all the figures.
The handle l) of the Wrench terminates at its left end in the stationary jaw c and at its right end in a cylindrical sleeve d. Telef scoped within the handle, and sliding smoothly therein, is the shank m of the movable jaw a, said shank terminating in a screw y', which passes through a thumb nut lc and is Hatte-ned at its inner end fi.. Said nut is shouldered in the aforesaid handle and its revolution causes the movable jaw to open or close. The cylindrical end d of the handle is provided with a smooth bore o in which is slidably fitted a cylindrical tool holder n. The right hand end of said holder is slotted, thereby forming two forks t if between which are revolubly attached a number of screw driver blades. The blades are tapered to different Widths and thicknesses on their outer ends, thereby forming different size screw drivers, and they are securely but revolubly attached to said holder by means ol a pin e, one end of which projects beyond thc holder n into an L shaped loclvslotfout on the outer edge ol said cylindrical sleeve d. The lel't hand ond of said holder is provided with a slot 7a., adapted to reeeive the iiattened end fi of the screw j, whereby the holder, when the Wrench j aws are closed, may be looked against revolution. Between the bottom of bore o and the left hand end of the holder .isa coiled spring which tends to force the holder ont et' said bore, but which tendency is eonnteraeted by the lock pin e restin against the side of the transverse portion o the L shaped look slot.
The normal posi tion of the wrench is that shown in Fig. 1, the jaw and blades being closed. ll the tool is to be used as a wrench, the jaw e is opened by means of the thumb screw, thereby causing the jaw a., shank lin, screw and flattened end i to taire substaib tially the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. When the parts are in that position the nin e, resting against the right hand shoulder of lock-slot f overcomes the tendency of the spring 2 to eject the tool holder n, and it thus retained in its proper position.
lf the tool, being closed as in Fig. l, is to be used as a serew driver, the thumb nut is revolved sufficiently far to withdraw the {lattened end i of screw j from the slot h of holder Sn, thus permitting the holder to bc revolved; the holder is then revolved until the in e bomes op osite the longitudinal portion of the lock-s ot f, in which position the spring z will eject the holder from the handle. The desired screw driver blade is then revolved into the open position; the holder reinserted into the handle and revolved so that the pin e enters the transverse Portion of the L shaped loekeslot, therebyT Voolring it against the ejeeting force of the coiled spring,l and the nut is then revolved until the flattened end of the screw renters the slot it of the holder, thereby locking the holder a ainst revolution. The tool s then ready to e used a screw driver, and a perfeet alinenient of the blade With the handle is maintained by reason of the narrcv.T ed e of its shank :i: exactly fitting the bore o the handle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1* 1. A combination-tool comprising a handle terminating at one end in a stationary IIO jaw and at the other end in a c vlindricalljv bored sleeve having an L shaped lock-slot cut therein; a movable jaw having a threaded shank, terminating in a tongue, telescopi-.d Within said handle; a thumb nut on said threaded shank; and a cylindrical tool holder slidably litted Within the bore ol' said handle., the inner end ol' which is slotted to receive said tongue oll the movable jaw and thereby7 lock the helder against revolution, and the outer end of wllich is slotted to .form two forks between which are revolubly fasteixed, by means of a transverse pin which projects into said L shaped lock-slot and locks the holder within said handle, a set of tools having llat shanks turned on their thin edges to exactly tit said bore of the handle, whereby each tool when. in use is rigidly held in alinelnent with the handle.
2. A combination tool comprising a handle terniinatingr at one end in a stationarjr `aw and at the other end in a cvlindrieally ored sleeve havinf an L shaped lock-slot cut therein 5 a mova le jawhavingathreaded shank, terminating in a tongue, telescoped within said handle; a thnmi nut on said threaded shank; a cylindrical tool holder slidabljmtted within the bore of said handle, the inner end of which is slotted to receive said tongue of the movable jaw and thereb;Y lock the holder against revolution, and the outer end of which is slotted to form two forks between which are revolubljyv fastened, by means of a transverse pin which projects into said L shaped lock-slot and locks the holder Within said handle, a set of tools having flat shanks turned on their thin edges to exactljY lit said bore of the handle, wherebjr each tool when in use is rigidly held in alinenient with the handle; and an ejectment springI between said holder and the bottom of the bore ol' said handle.
I. in a telescopic` wrench ol' the class shown the combination with a bore o and slotfin the handle of the stationary jaw, and a tongue i on the shank of the movable jaw, el. a cylindrical tool holder slidablv fitted within said bore and having a slot t at one end adapted to receive said tongue t' and two tongues t t at the other end between which are' revolubly attached, by means of a transverse pin e which projects into said lock-slot set of tools having flat shanks turned on their thin edges to exactly lit said boren.
4:. 1n a telescopic Wrench of the class shown the combination with a bore 0 and a slot f in the handle of the stationarjT jaw, and a tongue 'i on the shank of the movable jaw, of a cylindrical tool holder slidably fitted within said bore and having a slot t at one end adapted to receive said tongue il and two tongues t t at the other end between which are revolubly attached, by means of a transverse pin e which projects into said lock-slot f, a set of tools having flat shanks turned on their thin edges to exactly tit said bore, and a coiled spring 2 between the bottom of said bore of the handle and said holder.
In testimony whereof vl have subscribed in v naine to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
RAS M U S MADS N litnesses I G. OLSON, W. B. BRADLEY.
