Description

Jan. 16, .1945. 1.. HUNAU BRASSIERE Filed June 17, 1944 INVENTOR ZQZQ.
ATTORNEY from the seams IE or Patented Jan. 16, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BRASSIERE Lillian Hunau, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application June 11, 1944, Serial No. 540.830
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a brassiere. It is an object of this invention to .provide a brassiere which will give a firm support to the the tissues slip out from under the garment.
It is an object of this invention to provide a garment which will contain the breasts within the cup without strain on the fabric, and which will furnish the main s pport from the bottom of the cups.
The invention accordingly comprisesan articleof manufacture possessing the features, properties and the relation of elements which will be exemplified inthe article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevation of a device embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The garment of this invention comprises primarily a pair of cups, H and I2, attached together along a central seam l3, and each attached to a back .piece l4l5 by a seam l6-l'|. These'back pieces complete the encirclement of the body and they are provided with suitable fastening means, such as fasteners l8l9.
The primary supporting member of the brassire comprises an external band extending from one back piece to the other along the lower edge of the cups, to which it is firmly attached through its length, as shown at seam 20, and designed to bear against the body just below'the breasts to hold them from slipping down and to take the major strain away from the cup portions.
- This supporting member is composed of three parts, 2i, 22' and 23. The parts 2| and 23 extend l'l toward the center of the bottom of the cup, while the part 22 extends from the center of the bottom of one cup to the center of the bottom of the other. The parts-2i and 22 are sewed to the center seam of one cup at 24,
and the parts 22 and 23 are sewedto the center seam of the other cup at 25. The parts 2| and 23 are each of generally triangular shape defined by the lower edge attached by the seam 20 to the bottom of the cup, and a side edge extending up along and sewed into the side seams l6 or H. The third side of the triangle is cut out circularly, as shown at 26, to pass around the side of the cup and to furnish thus a tab 21 to which a tape may be attached. The central portion 22 has a horizontal bottom edge attached along the seam 20,'and it has an upwardly extending tab 28 at the center, the side edges of which curve, as shown at 29, to join the bottom portion to pass around the contour of the breast and not over it. Y
A pair of tapes 30 areprovided, each of which is attached to the tab 28 and which extends up over the top of the cup and is connected to the tab 21, one of these tapes being on each side. The shoulder strap 34 itself is connected to the top of the breast cup at one end; as shown at 3|, and goes over the shoulder to the back piece at 32. This strap carries a metal loop 33 through which the tape 30 is carried, and this loop is so positioned that the strains are divided between the cup and the tabs, it being intended that the principal strain shall occur upon the tape 3 but that a sufiicient strain shall be placed upon the top of the breast cup to keep the tissue in its proper contour. It will be seen that the tabs 2! and 28 are free from the material of the cups except at seams l6, ll, 20, 24 and 25.
With the foregoing garment it'will be clear that the material of the cup rests upon 'the skin and can move with it, whereas the strain of the support is carried by the supporting member which is largely free, and at the center wholly free from the cups, so that if the body is bent to the side or an arm is raised, imposing a side strain upon the central support, the central tab 3| may slide over the material of the cups without moving the cups upon the flesh.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of a the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific'features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'1. A garment of the character described comprising a pair of breast cups attached together along a vertical seam, body encircling members attached to the sides of the cups for holding them in place, a reinforcing member outside of said cups and lying overthem extending between said body encircling members and attached along the lower edges of said cups, and fastened into the central seam of the breast pockets at the lower portion thereof, side tabs extending upwardly at the outer edges of the cups and attached to the body encircling members, but otherwise free from the material of the cups, and a central tab extending upwardly from the reinforcing member between the cups, but otherwise free from the material or the cups, said tabs all lying over and on the outer side of the breast pockets and being cutaway along the curve to conform to the contour of the breast, a shoulder strap on each side connected to the side tab, the central tab and to the center of the breast pocket.
2. A garment of the character described comprising a pair of breast cups attached together along a vertical seam, body encircling members attached to the sides of the cups for holding them in place, a reinforcing member outside of said cups and lying over them extending between said body encircling members and attached along the lower edges of said cups, and fastened into the central seam of the breast pockets at the lower portion thereof, side tabs extending uptached to the body encircling members, but otherwise free from the material of the cups, and a central tab extending upwardly from the reinfoi cing member between the cups, but otherwise free from the material of the cups, said tabs all lying over and on the outer side of the breast pockets and being cut away along the curve to conform to the contour of the breast, a tape connecting the center tab with the side tab on each side, and a shoulder strap connected to said tape.
3. A garment of the character described comprising a pair of breast cups attached together along a, vertical seam, body encircling. members attached to the sides of the cups for holding them in place, a reinforcing member outside of said cups and lying over them extending between said body encircling members and attached along the lower edges of said cups, and fastened into the central seam of the breast pockets at the lower portion thereof, side tabs extending upwardly at the outer edges of the cups and attached to the body encircling members, but otherwise free from the material of the cups, and a central tab extending upwardly from the reinforcing member between the cups, but otherwise free from the material of the cups, said tabs all lying over and on the outer side of the breast pockets and being cut away along the curve to conform to the contour of the breast, a tape connecting the center tab with the side tab on each side, a shoulder strap connected to said tape, and a connection between said shoulder strap and the top of the cup for maintain- 35 ing the material of the cup taut.
wardly at the'outer edges of the cups and at- LILIJAN HUNAU.
