Description

A. MORRISON WINDOW SASH BALANCE Filed March 30', 1944 Dec. 26, 1944.
, INVENTOR.
' ing downwardly the extent of the Patented Dec. 26, 1944 assets;
WINDOW sAsn BALANCE Abraham Morrison," "Annie Lillian M 2 trait; Mich.
Detroit, Mich., assigno'r to rison andxlda .Morrison, :De- J l 1 'nppli e'atio mar'ch o,1944, srialn lszaiosj s "claims. atom. 16-198) .My invention relates generally to spring sash I alances and specifically to-improvements in a housing for the spring and in the drum containingthespring, as Welles-improvements in other related parts, hereinafter more fully described The preferred form of construction by which these objects areattained is shown in the accompanying drawing inwhich: V Figure 1- is a sectional side elevation of the assembled balance-with the' side cover plate :19 removed a Figure .2 Figure 17 r Figure.3 isa plan view of Figure 1 with the side cover plate shown in section.
Figure '4 is a vertical section of side cover plate I9. H s Figure is an outside view of slotted spring holder and connectortube l I.1
Figure Sis; an end view of connector tube II.
Thesamereferencejnunierals refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
My device consists of an angle plate I, having a lower flange 23 and. a wall portion including an offset portion 2 extending laterally therefrom to form a more efiective locking means. Lower flange 23 has an offset portion 23', extendthickness of the steel in said flange, as shown, to provide clearance for easy installation in and fastening to the window frame. This novel construction of flange 23 will eliminate the two impractical methods now necessarily employed with straight flanges in fastening sash balances to the casement. space in the casement to receive the flange end which remains on the outside for fastening. This is time consuming, and it is costly to the one installing balances since he is usually paid per balance installed. The second method is to draw that flange end up to the casement against strain to permit it to be screwed in place. This means is equally unsatisfactory because a screw thus inserted can in time, with the balance in operation, become loosened and throw the entire balance out ofworking position. My improvement in offsetting flange 23 as indicated permits is a section takenqon line I-I of the housing to fit farther, into the casement opening, therebyfbringing "both ends of the The first of these methods is to chisel flange onfa ,level ffo'rj fastening, without added effort. Q i I: A second plate 4 having a wall portion and a lower flange 22 is secured to the angle plateby welding the respective lower flanges of each plate as shown at 24. A wallof paper 3 with a center.
aperture 'is placed between plates I and 4 to proride space for extension hub 5 of plate l. When plate It is secured to plate 5 by boltQ which is tightened bynut I 2, andwhen lower flange 22 ofplate 4 is spot welded to lower flange 23 of plate I at spots 24, plate I and therebythe houseingis strengthened at all points.- Bolt 9 is not provided with a screw driver slot at its head, the reason being to discourage any attempt at open.-
,'ing the housing. at thatend, because it is intended that bolt .9 and nut I2 remainia permanent fixture in the housing. Plate 4 serves to complete thelocking of the housing since it conforms to the. inner contour, of cover plate is, .thu's preventing sliding movement. Slotted spring holder and connector tube II 'fits into-extensionhub 5 of plate 4 and is riveted by extension lugs ID of connector tube l I.
Tape drum .1. which is mounted on connector ,tube II has an outside extension. sleeve fi which serves .to frictionally oppose the rotation of -.the drum and keep it in free rotating position, while at the same time providing a flush inside wall for even winding of the spring it. A washer 6 through said extension hub and through plate I is fitted over extension sleeve 8 of tape drum 1 to separate the drum from plate 4 in order that the drum 7 may have room to rotate freely on slotted spring holder and connector tube ii. A spring I3 is mounted in tape drum 1 over spring holder II, its inner end 2| being hooked through slot I4 of spring holder II, while its outer end 25 is hooked over projection l5 pressed inward in the outer rim of tape drum "I. Then one end of steel tape I8 is threaded through holes It in the outer rim of tape drum 7 and folded over to form a fastening as shown, while the other end leads through opening I! provided in the lower flanges of plates I and 4, and is then hooked to the window sash (not shown).
This entire assembly is covered by cover plate I9 which has a projection 20 on its lower ends to engage the offset portion 2 of plate i to prevent upward movement. Ferrel 26. which has a screw driver slot on its head and is threaded to fit, over bolt 9, passes through a suitable center opening in cover plate I9 and is screwed on to bolt 9 thereby completing the assembly. This means of securing the cover plate to the angle plate is an improvement over the present method of fastening the cover plate by riveting extension lugs which are made to project from the connector tube through the cover plate for that purpose. The present method does not permit easy removal of the cover plate for oiling or repairs to the inner parts without permanently damaging the cover plate and possibly related parts as well. My improvement takes care of this by allowing the cover plate to be easily and effortlessly removed by simply unscrewing ferrel 25, while with ferrel 26 in place, the cover plate remains firmly secured to the rest of the housing.
plate, preventing upward movement, said inner plate conforming to the inner contour of the cover plate to prevent sliding movement.
