Description

DeC- 21, 1937. G. v. JAKEWAY DOOR HANDLE MOUNTING FilKed Sept. 5, 1936 "iii'ii\ I m INVENTOR. efa/d V. cfa/fa Wa www; @auf WK 7 #1W ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 2l, 1937 PATENT oEFlcE DOOR HANDLE MOUNTING Gerald v. Jakeway, Grana Rapids, Mich., mignor to Keeler Brass Company. Grand Rapids,
Mich.
Application September 5, 1936, Serial N0. 99,565
16 Claims.
The main objects of my invention are:
First. to provide a novel and improved mounting for an automobile door handle.
Second, toprovide a mounting of the type described which is economical in construction and highly pleasing in. appearance.
Third, to provide a mounting of the type described which eliminates the necessity for the conventional exterior escutcheon securing screws, hence improves the appearance of the mounting and prevents unauthorized removal thereof.
Fourth, to provide a mounting of the type described which is simple in its parts and readily assembled on an automobile, or other, door to which it is applied.
Further objects relating to details and economies of my invention will definitelyv appear from the description to follow.. The invention is defined in the claims. Preferred-embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentaryview partially broken away and in section on line I--I of Fig. 4, illus trating the door handle mounting in assembled position on an automobile door.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 3. 5
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, illustrating details of the securing means in one form.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, illustrating details of my device. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section illustrating the manner in which my device is assembled on a door, a modified form of securing means being shown in this view.
Outside door handle mountings for automobiles ordinarily employ escutcheon plates provided with exposed screws whereby the same are fastened to the door. `In addition to the fact that screw holes and screws therein needlessly detract from the appearance of the mounting, the accessibility of the screws renders it easy to tamper with or remove the mounting. I have devised a door handle mounting -comprising an escutcheon member which is free from both of the above named disadvantagesv and which is exceedingly simple in construction. Broadly considered, the invention resides in securing a plain escutcheon to a door by means of a threaded member inserted in the door from the edge thereof normally adjacent the frame, whereby in closed and locked position the securing means is hidden and enclosed between the door and door frame and is, hence, inaccessible for tampering.
Referring to the drawing. lreference numeral I generally indicates a door in closed relation to its frame 2, the door being provided with an over- 5 hanging lip 3 adapted to seat against a land 4 on the 'frame to seal the door and prevent access to the securing means, to be hereinafter described, in closed position of the door. The outer door panel 5 is conformed to provide lip 3 in a l0 well known manner and likewise is apertured at 6 to receive the handle escutcheon member 9,
, a reinforcing plate 'l being welded to the inside of the panel at 8 and apertured in line with opening .6. Plate 'I consists of a one-eighth inch l5 reinforcing plate approximately two and onehalf inches wide and has an offset or locking member 10 struck out from one end thereof, the offset being provided with a hole 1I for a purpose to be hereafter described.
Escutcheon member 9 ilts snugly within opening 6 and has a cylindrical wall I0 provided with an integral lug I I engaging a notch I2 in panel 5 for the purpose of locating and preventing turning of theescutcheon relative to the door. The
escutcheon member has a tapered portion I3 provided with` an internally threaded sleeve I 4 suitably secured therein and in alinement withhole 'II for the purpose of receiving locking screw I5. Sleeve Il carries integral lugs I8 cooperating with 30 corresponding notches in the hole in which it is mounted, as illustrated in Fig. 3, to prevent rotation of the sleeve therein.
On the outer edge I6 of the door, I form an opening I1 whereby screw I5 may be inserted 35 during assembly, the screw extending through hole 1I in oifset 'I0 and threadedly engaging sleeve I4. Thus in assembled position, with the annular ilange I9 of the escutcheon member abutting door panel 5 and with lug II engaged in 40 the locating notch I2, the screw I5 may be advanced to engage the escutcheon member and draw the same firmly against the door panel.
Specific details of the handle construction, such as handle member 20, spindle 2|, and ten- 45 sioning spring 22, form no part of my present invention and will not be described at length.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of my invention, as well as the manner of assembling the elements in located position, the embodiment of Fig. 5 employing a circular boss 23 drilled and tapped to receive screw I5 which extends through a hole 24 formed in a recess 25 upset in the edge of the door adjacent the frame, the recess hole, hole ll. and threaded boss being in alinement.
Screw Il passes through the hole Il and threadedly engages the escutcheon in the same manner described-relative to the modification of Fig. i. In other respects the mountings are identical and need not be further described.
Prom the above description, the advantages of my device will be clear. By theuse of a blind fastening instead of an escutcheon plate having exposed screws, the handle mounting is rendered tamper proof and the appearance of the same is materially improved. Use of the construction of my invention entails little modincation of existing door structures and the assembly of the fastening means on the door may be easily and quickly performed.
I have illustrated and described my improve--y ments in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or 'describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
