Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a View in horizontal section, taken;
substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2..
Figure 5 is a view in vertical section through one of the grinding stones, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a frame structure which is designated generally by reference numeral l. The frame 1 comprises a pair of bars 2 having converging rear end portions 3. Fixed on the end portions 3 of the bars 2 in the handle 4. The bars 2 further include angularly or horizontally extending forward end portions 5 which are adapted to rest on theusual upper cutter guide bar 6 of a conventional coal mining machine. An endless chain 1 is operablein the,
lower guide 8. Brackets 9 are mounted on the chain 1 at spaced points and project at different angles therefrom. The picks) are mounted in the brackets 9.
pointis a substantially segmental housing II. In the embodiment shown, the housing H includes spaced, arcuate, concentric front and rear plates I 2 and 13, respectively, top and bottom Suspended from the bars 2 at, an intermediate out thenecessity dfremovirrg themirom the All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become ap- Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the de- 1' *Slidably hunted in radial openings which are ."provided therefor in' the inner plate 1 I 2 is a plu- :Figfl i, the grinding stones F8 "are mounted diagonally relativeto the'mining machinehainland "in' airs. *Theconstruetion of 'the frame I is such 10 that'the bars 2, whichparallel each 'otheffex- "tend at-an obtuseangle fromthe-guide 6 of. the

grooves 22 for the receptionof the picks l0. Look nuts 23 secure the screws I 9 in adjusted. position. It is thought that the operation of the device will-be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly; the end portions 5 of the frame structure I are engaged on top of the guide 6 .of the machine in a manner to dispose O the grooved forward ends of the pairs of grinding stones l8 inthe paths of the picks Ill. The chain 1 of the machine is reversed in order that the 'bits 24 of thepicks ID will drag or trail across the stones l8. This is indicated by the arrows 5 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Asthe picks [0 are moved across the forward ends of the diagonally a mounted pairs of stones l8, said stones are forced rearwardly against the tension of the coil springs K 20. Thus suflicient friction is hadto sharpen the 40 bits 24 of the picks l0, said bits travelling in the grooves 22., The adjustable thumb screws l9 permit the resistance of the coilsprings 20 to be regulated as desired. Y
It is believed that the many advantages of a sharpener constructed in accordance with the usual manner between the upper guide 6 and a 3 stood that changes in the details of construction and in the combinationand arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: I l. A sharpener for the picks of the horizontal endless cutter chain of a coal mining machine,
The forward ends of the stones IBhave formed therein substantially ll-shaped wherein the cutter chain travels between upper and lower guides, and wherein the picks project from the chain at different angles, comprising, a frame structure engageable with the upper cutter chain guide to hold the sharpener in operative position on the machine, a-housing mounted ion the frame structure, a plurality of grinding stones arranged in a vertical arc and slidably mounted in the housing and projecting therefrom for engagement by the picks, and means for yieldingly resisting sliding movement of the stones away from the picks-when said picks are engaged therewith.
2. A sharpener for the picks of the horizontal,- endless cutter chain of a coal mining machine,
wherein the cutter chain travels between upper and lower guides, and wherein the picks project from the chain at difierent angles, comprising, a frame structure engageable with the upper cutter chain guide to hold the sharpener in operative position on the machine, a housing mounted on the frame structure, and a plurality of pairs of grinding stones arranged in a vertical arcand slidably mounted in the housing and projecting therefrom for engagement by the picks, and means for yieldingly resisting sliding movement of the stones away from the picks when said picks are engaged therewith, said means including coil springs engaged with the stones, and an arcuate:,
series of thumb screws threaded for adjustment in the housing and engaged with said coil springs.
3. A sharpener for the picks of coal mining machines comprising, a frame including a pair of the stones.
of bars engageable, at one end, on the machine, a handle on the other ends of said bars, a substantially segmental housing mounted 'on the 'bars and depending therefrom, pairs of grinding stones mounted radially and slidably in the housing, said stones projecting forwardly from the" housing for engagement and rearward actuation by the picks, thumb screws threadedly mounted for adjustment in the housing, and coil springs engaged with said thumb screws and with the stones for yieldingly resisting rearward actuation of said stones by the picks.
4. A sharpener for mining machine picks comprising,a frame structure including a pair of bars engageable, at one end, on a mining machine, a
' handle on the other ends of the bars, a substantially segmental housing secured beneath the bars and depending therefrom, said housing including spaced, concentric front and rear plates, said front plate having radial openings therein, grinding stones slidably mounted in the openings and projecting forwardly from the housing for engagement and rearward actuation by the picks, said grinding stones having grooves in their forward ends for the reception of the picks and further having channels in their rear ends, thumb screws threadedly mounted for adjustment in the rear plate of the housing, and coil springs having one end engaged with the thumb screws and their other ends engaged in the channels for yieldingly resisting rearward sliding movement VAYFISHER.
