THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,338, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed November 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,. WILLIAM E. KINNEAR, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Thill-(louplings; and I do hereby declarecthat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, 'making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is aside elevation. Fig. 2 is a bottom View partly broken away.
This invention has relation to Lhill-coup lings; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A is an axle, B aclip, and G the tie-plate. Projecting forward from clip B, are two ears, D D, one integral with the clip and the other hinged thereto by a rule-joint. On the inside of said ears, and on a line, are the two recesses E E. At the ends of the ears D D are bored the holes F F, the former being round, but the latter has a slot, f, extending inwardly along ear D. H is the thill-iron, having head I, with ends K, adapted to fitin recesses E E. L is a bolt having a lug, l, at one end and screw-threaded at the other end, a. M is a thumb-nut, serrated upon its periphery b, so
(ModeL) as to form a ratchet. Upon the face of ear D, at its extremity beyond hole F, is formed a shoulder, a. ear D is a spring-pawl, N, having its end a projecting outwardly from the axle.
In putting the thills or pole in place, the head I is seated with its ends in the recesses E E, and the bolt L, with the thumb screwed upon it, is inserted through holes F F, its lug Z passing through slot f. The bolt is then turned until the lug Zstrikes against shoulder c, when the nut M is tightened along the bolt, and the end of the pawl Nis put into engagement with the ratchet upon the nut, which effectually prevents the nut from turning.
What I claim is- In a thill-coupling, the combination of the rigid earl) and the hinged ear D, recessed at E E and perforated at F F, with the thilliron H, and the bolt L, having lug Z and threaded end a, the ratcheted thumb-nut M, and the pawl N, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
