" jstreet cars, and thelike; It is to be understood,
has'for its object toprovide a new andimproved display or advertising card structure. e More specifically stated, itis an object of the invention to provide an improved display or advertisingdevice wherein a principal advertising P or-display card has associated-therewith a series of smaller circulars or the like, adapted to be individually removed 01' disassociated' from the principal card structure. V
The inventio contemplates improved means for removably associating the circulars withthe principal cardstructure.
, Further objects oftheinvention are to provide, in a structure of the-foregoing type, new and improved means for iacilitating the loading of i the circulars upon'the principal structure, and
new and improved means for facilitating theinstructure constru.:i' ed in accordance with the principles of the invention:

ofct'he circulars; 'and Fig; 8 is, a: detail view, more particularly illustrating the shaping-of the retention pocket-slot.
Referringymore, particularly to the drawing, in. Fig. 1 'thereqis illustrated apanel, generally, indicated bythenumeral III of a type and kind adapted to receive: display or. advertising card structures constructed inaccordance with the invention. Asshown; the panel is ofthetype usually associated: with vehicles such as busses,
however, that thefinvention' is'appli'cable to dis-j play or advertising devices generally, and that thepanel or support structure accordingly may be'mounted iIlLVELIiOllS types of installations.
More specifically, referring to Figs. 1 and*3. I thepanel structure includes' an elongated sheet metalsupport I l, curved in cross section; and-pro vided at its opposite edgeswith inturned retentitan-flanges, i2 and I3. A single; support H is adaptedtoreceive a plurality of advertising or it: may beeasily handled and snapped into-posidisplay cards/and to this end retaining bars M are provided atsuitable intervals, adapted'to en"- gage the end edges of the cards and retain them in position against the surface of the support l I.
The side edges of the cards areretained within the flanges l 2 and l 3, these flanges thus cooperatinggwith the bars [4* to retain" the cards firmly against the curved surface of'the support I l The bars M- are formed of'sprin'g stockahd maybe removably engaged with-the flanges 12' and l3 and snapped into card retaining position as shown in Figsql and 3.- i By removal of i the bars the cards may be'interchanged andreplaced;
The cardstructure, as, constructed in accordance with the invention, is illustrated in perspective detailin Fig.;2;the card being shown in its normal flat condition prior to assembly uponthe supportstructure. The cardjstructure comprises,.m'ore specifically, amain'card memberl8and a reinforcing or backing element l9,
pref erably arranged in one corner thereof, as illustrated. Thebaclring element may be. adhesiveiysecured over its entirearea to the rear face of the" card. A die-cut slot, generally indicated by, thenumeral 20, is perforated through both the main card and the reinforcing element. The provision. of the backing element enables the "main. card t8, preferably of cardboard' or the like, to be made of'sufliciently light stockso that tion against the curved support structure I IL At Fig.8 of'the drawing. As shown, the slot corn- Fig. '7. is-..an;illustrative perspective viewof one 4 the same time the backing element produces an i area of increased strength and rigidity in the vicinityjoffthe slot 20; the backing element, which i mayjalso preferably be of cardboard or the like, inefiect producing a card of double thickness in j the vicinity ofth slot; Y
The particular shaping of the slot, constitutinigia'nimporta'nt feature of the invention in one i offlitsaspects, is more particularly illustrated in prises" a generally;jhorizo-ntal portion 2|, and a pairof d'ownwardly extending end portions 22 and 23;,the end andhorizontal portions cooperating to form an inverted generally U-shaped slot structure. While the slot portion 2| is generally horizontallydisposed, it will be noted that it is not truly horizontal, but is curved slightly, or sloped downwardly towards the ends. it will be noted that the horizontal slot is of progressively increasing width towards its central portion. The end slot elements 22 and 23 extend downwardly and slightly toward each other at their lowermost ends. Also, the lower ends of these slot elements are rounded or provided with arcuate terminal surfaces. The particular shaping of the slot-is of importance in effecting the objects of the invention, and its manner of operation, and cooperation with the other elements of the structure, is best illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing.
Referring to the illustrative views, Figs. 4 and 5, and first to Fig. 4, this view shows the card and backing element in section, and illustrates the positions which the card areas in the vicinity of the slot tend to assume as the card is bent into generally arcuate or curved shape, corresponding to the curvature it will have when in assembled operative position. It will be noted that the card portion 24 disposed below the horizontal slot portion 2| and between the end slots 22 and 23 will not tend to assume a curved position, but on the contrary will remain substantially straight as the card is bent. The card portion 24, being unconnected from the upper card body by reason of the presence of the slot 2|, and also being somewhat structurally divorced from the adjacent side card areas and the bending forces therein by reason of the presence of the slots 22 and 23, in effect forms a somewhat free tab element. Accordingly as the card structure is applied to its support II, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the tabor card portion 24, while being forced to assume a partially bent or curved position, does not assume the same curvature or contour as the main card body. The tab assumes a lesser curvature and produces moreover at its upper portion 25, and particularly adjacent the center thereof as indicated at 25' in Fig. 8, an area of increased pressure against the support II, and at its lower portion-26, an area of decreased pressure. Uponthe proper proportioning of the parts for a given installation, the card portion 26 will separate itself slightly from the support structure U, as indicated in Fig. 5, and in any event sections of decreased pressure, as indicated at 26 in Fig. 8, are provided to facilitate the introduction of circulars or the like into the slot structure.
It will be seen that the slot 2|, when taken together with the card and the backing support II, in effect forms a pocket structure into which circulars or the like may be inserted, and held in position between the card and the support; The position assumed by the parts upon the insertion Also,
zontal length of the slot 2| is slightly greater than the width of the circulars, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In operation the circulars are inserted as a packet or group into the pocket structure, and are thereafter removable individually by means of the extending tabs 36, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Due to the fact that the circulars are individual sheets, the supply within the'pocket may be replenished at any time to the desired number, without removal or destruction of the remaining circulars such as would be necessary if the circulars were in book form or the like. As has been hereinbefore brought out, the areas of reduced pressure 26 provide convenient entry points for the lowermost corners of the circulars, facilitating their introduction into the slot and pocket structure' Moreover, the generally curved shape of the horizontal slot portion 2| permits the packet of circulars to be bent slightly as indicated by the dotted lines 37 in Fig. '7, upon insertion. This, bending ofthe circulars imparts rigidity to theipacket, facilitating its introduction into the slot and into the card pocket structure. While the circulars are held in the pocket, the curved shaping of the slot portion 2| still tends to impart a very slight curvature to the circulars aiding in retaining them in upright position. The circular extending tab portion 36 invites and facilitates the ready withdrawalof a circular, and at the same time discourages the removal of more than a single circular at a time. The pocket structure, including the action'of the resilient retaining tab 24, as heretofore described, and the general clamping action afforded between the reinforced card andthe backing support permits the withdrawal of one circular of such circulars is illustrated in Fig. 6. As
that the circular comprises a main body portion 35 and a bent tab portion 36 adapted to extend downwardly and forwardly when the circular is in assembled position upon the card. The horiwithout the disarraying or disturbing of the remaining circulars in the pocket. The backing element I9 provides for increased strength of the card structure in the vicinity of the pocket, and the location of the slot 29 in proximity to the retention flange I3 and the bar It permits these elements to impart the'necessary supporting and retaining actionto the pocket structure. In other words, the proximity of the support devices I3 and M to the pocket structurev enables their supporting and retaining action to be imparted to the pocket, without causing the supporting forces to be transmitted through extended card surfaces such as would be true if the pocket were more centrally disposed on the card.
The curved or arcuate surfaces at the lowermost extremities of the slots 22 and 23 prevent tearing of the card and add durability-to the construction.
It is obvious -thatvarious changes'may be made in the specific embodiment set forth without departing from the spirit of the invention, The invention is accordingly not to be limited to the precise embodiment shown and described, but only as indicated in the following claims.
