HANGING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,285, dated January 4, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED VVILBUR, of Allegheny city, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Flanging- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, making a part of 1o this specitication, in which-like letters indicatin g like parts- Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section, of a Hanging-machine illustrative of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, in sectional elevation, of a detached portion of the shaft or spindle, the nut, and the former; and Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, ot'a plate partially Banged, illustrative of the work performed by my improved machine.
My present invention relates to certain improvements in the tlanging-machine shown and described in Letters Patent No. 157,810, granted December 15, 1874, to Richard Garstang.
Heretofore this machine h as only been used for flanging flue-holes wholly within the sheet or' plate, such as the holes a, and a', Fig. 3. This in some cases is all that is required; but there is a large class of Work, as in marine and other boilers of large size, where the head is made of two or more separate sheets, with tine-holes made partly in one sheet or plate and partly in another. One such sheet is shown at A, Fig. 3, and the part holes at a2 (1.3. The flanges are turned on these part holes, as at a2, before the different sheets are joined. -Heretoforc these part holes could not be i'lan ged successfully with the machine referred to but by means of my improvement this Work can be done equally as well as with holes, like mt', lying within the sheet.
In the drawings, B represents the main frame of the machine, which may be of any suitable form and construction. An annular bed or table, O, is secured on the sleeper B', on which the plate to be iianged is clamped or secured in any convenient Way.
A Hanging head or frame, D, of conical form, carrying on its periphery two, three, or 5o more inclined rollers, d, is employed to turn the iiange, and in so doing it bends the metal upward and forces it against the inner edge or face ot' an annular former, E.
A shaft, F F', extends downward from the support B2 and operates the Hanging-head D.
For convenience in -uncoupling this shaft, it is made in two parts, F and F', which are connected so as to transmit the motion of one part to the other by means of an angular shank or pin and socket orbox, f. Rotary motion is 6o given to the shaft, and through it t0 the head D, by means of gearing H H' and drivingshaft h.
` In order that the shaft F F' and head D may have vertical as well as rotary motion, the wheel H is keyed to the shaft by feather and groove 71.', and the desired vertical movement is secured from the rotary movement by means of a screw-thread, c, formed on the part F' of the shaft, and a threaded nut in the hub ofthe 7o hand-wheelC'. Theshatt F' alsopasses through the hub or sleeve E', which is supported above the former E by arms or bars e, and in operation the nut C' is run down upon or against the sleeve E', which thus serves as a rest. 7 5
To lock the nut and sleeve together in one direction of motion, ratchets e', Fig. 2, are made on the adjacent edges of these two parts, which ratchets are so arranged that the nut may be turned in one direction on the sleeve, and thus 8o raise the head D until it bears against the under side `ot' the plate to be anged; but, on the other hand, when the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction the nut and sleeve will lock, the nut be held stationary, and the shaft and head be raised by the rotation, so as to turn the iiange. The force thus exerted to raise the shaft and head reacts through the uut C', sleeve E', and former E, thereby holding the former firmly upon the plate. 9o
'lhe parts of the machine thus far described are operated substantially as described in the patent above referred to.
My improvement consists in extending the shaft F' downward below the head D, as at 95 F2, and this extension is journaled in a box,
b, in the sleeper B', so as to be free to move endwise in and out of the box and to rotate therein 5 but while in the box the bearing thus secured will prevent lateral movement or yieldreo ing of the head D, such as would otherwise be caused by pressure on one side only of the head. The length of extension Fz is, by preference, a little greater than the range of vertical movement of the head in the fiauging operation; but when desired the shaft F F can be uncoupled atf, and the lower part, F', with the head and former, be removed and replaced as before. The special function performed by this extension F2 is to hold the hanging-head to its Work, or to prevent it from yielding side- Wise when turning a fiauge ou a part hole, as at a2, Fig. 3, and by lneans of it such work can be done on the machine as Well as when the hole is wholly within the plate. In the latter case the plate surrounds the head, and being clamped firmly to the table, it serves as a guide to hold the head in propel' position but even then the extension F2 is an improvement and enables the machine to do better work.
Vhen a tlange is to be turned in the edge of a plate, as ata?, the plate is firmly clamped to the table in proper position; also, it may be braced against one of the sides of the frame to prevent it from being forced away from the head; also, pins may be set in holes s iu the table, against which the edge of the plate may bear, and thus prevent turning of the plate. Then, the extension F2 holding the head from yielding` laterally, as described, the upward and rotary movement of the head will turn a flange, as at a2, whatever part of a circle it may represent.
By this improvement the machine is made capable of doing a large class of Work which could not be done by it before-namely, the Hanging of part holes in the edges of plates. 'lhus the value and capacity ofthe machine are greatly increased.
I claim herein as myinvention- In a Hanging-machine having a vertically and rotary moving Hanging-head, D. with table C and former E, and in combination therewith, a two-part orjointed driving-stem, F F, extending above the Hanging-head, as described, a stem or bearing, F2, extending below the Hanging-head, and guides or boxes both above and below the head for receiving such stems, substantially as described, whereby the hanging-head is prevented from yielding laterally under unequal pressure, whileits freedom for rotary and vertical motion is preserved.
