J. E. WAGENHURST.
ROOF DOUBLE SBAMING MAOHINB.
Patented Dec. 1, 1885.
v. /AA' 1723s@ fsf, '9, zo. H Bv www l) Y Y ATTORNEY,
i. Gratis JOHN H. VAGENHURST; OF DFVART, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROOF DOUBLEESEANHNG MACH-HNE.
SPEGIEECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,586, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed May 1S), 1885. Serial No. 165,987.
.To all whom it may concern..-
Beit known that J oHN H. WAGENHURST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dewart, in the county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Roof DoubleSeaming Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speeilicationand accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a seamingmachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view thereof, partly broken away. Fig. 3 represents a lon' gitudinal vertical section in line x x, Fig. 2. Fig. et represents a transverse section in line g/ y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a transverse section in line .e e, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a- Asection of a portion in line z' e', Fig. 2. The
remaining figures represent various steps of forming and closing a seam.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Myinvention consists of a roof double-seam ing machine having means for bending roofing plates or sheetsl and` closing the seam thereof by successive operations, as will be hereinafter set forth.
It also consists in rendering the rollers of the machine laterally adjustable.
It further consists in rendering the rollers vertically adjustable.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame or bed of the machine, and B represents longitudinallyextcnding bars whose ends are fitted to blocks C by means of tongues and grooves, as at D, whereby said bars may be moved laterally in said blocks.
Bearing against the'outer sides of the bars B are springs E, the pressure whereof is ad- 40 justed by means of screws F, which are connected with the side pieces of the bed A.
On the blocks B are mounted rollers G G', H H', J J', and K K', it being noticed that all of said rollers, excepting the roller J', have vertical pivots or axes, and said roller J has a horizontal pivot or axis. The roller G has a beveled shoulder, L, which overhangs the chamfered top edge of the roller G'. The roller H has a right-angled shoulder, M, which overhangs the right-lined top of the roller H'. The roller J is cylindrical on its working-face, and
(No model.)
the roller J is spheroidal. Both rollers K K' are cylindrical on their workingfaces and similar in their natures. The blocks C are ttedin vertical slots in the end pieces of the frame A, and have swiveled to them screws N, whereby said blocks, and consequently the bars B, may be raised and lowered, it being noticed that the bars are both vertically and laterally adjustable, whereby the rollers may be set nearer to or farther from each other in both vertical and horizontal positions, and thus adj usted with nicety in regard to the nature of the work, the degree of pressure, 8vo.
The bed is provided with suitable rollers, whereby the machine may be readily run on the roof or otherplace where seaming is required. rlhe lower portions of the workingrollers are reduced in diameter, so that the plates or sheets may be readily entered between each pair of rollers.
When two flanged plates or sheets are placed together as usual for roofing or other pur poses, as seen in Fig. 7, and the machine is advanced thereto, the flanges of said plates or sheets have their upper ends brought between the diagonal shoulders of the roller G and chamfered edge of the roller G', the result of which is the partial bending of the longer flange of the plates or sheets, forminga lip at top thereof, as seen in Fig. 8. Then the rollers H H' bend said lip from its diagonal to a rightangular form, as shown in Fig. 9, after which the rollers J J' bend the lip over the top of the short flange, as seen in Fig. 10, said lip then being compressed by the rollers K K', the result being a tightly-closed seam, the same having been produced in a convenient and easy mannerand without the employment of au expensive machine. The seam as formed may now be again run through the machine, the rollers being properly adjusted to permit the same, the result being a doubling of the seam and further security of the saine.
On the roller G, at the base of the shoulder L, is a circumferential groove, L', and at the base of the chamfered edge of the roller G' is a circumferential bead, G2, which occupies portion of the groove L', so that when the plate or sheet enters between the rollers G G' there is a perfect break at the bend of the same, as seen in Fig. S.
IOC
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a seamingmachine, the vcombination of the bars B, having tongues and carrying rollers, grooved blocks C, frame A, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting said blocks C and bars B, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A seaming machine composed of the frame A, provided with lateral and vertical adjustable bars B, having blocks C connected therewith, rollers G Gr', H H', J J', and K K', all of said parts being arranged, combined, and operated substantially as and for the purpose setV forth.
3. A seeming-machine having the rollers G G', lH H', and J J', the said rollers being formed, arranged, and combined substantially as described.
4. In a searning-machine, the combination of the frame A, bars B. blocks C, springs E, and screws F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a sgaming-machine, the frame A, provided with screws secured to blocks C, in combination with bars B, carrying rollers and adjustably attached to the said blocks C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth;
JOHN H. VAGENHURST.
