IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FORMING LETTERS ON THE CIRCUMFERENCE 0F METAL DISKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,970, dated March 26, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Forming Letters upon the Circumferen cc of a Metallic Disk, invented by STEPHEN M. Orr, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey.
Figure l is a side view of my improved device, partly in section, through the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improvement in forming raised letters and other devices upon the edges or circumferences of metallic disks, which will enable said devices to be formed more accurately and at much less expense than when engraved upon said edges in the ordinary manner; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the stand or bed, the top of which is made circular, or has a circular projection of suitable size "formed upon it, the outer surface of which has a screw-thread out upon it to receive the screw-thread out upon the inner surface of the lower part of the collar B. The upper part of the collar B projects inward, and its inner surface is inclined, beveled, or made in the form of a section of a cone, as shown in Fig. 1. O are the dies, which are made in the form of sections of a ring-plate, as shown in Fig. 2, the inner surface of said dies forming the circumference of a circle of the same size as the wheel or disk to be made or operated upon. The outer surface of the dies 0 is beveled, inclined, or made conical in the same direction as the beveled inner surface of the upper part of the collar B, so that when the said collar is screwed down it may force the segmental dies 0 closely together. The dies 0 may be made so that two or any desired number of segmental dies may form a perfect circle. Upon the inner surface of the segmental dies 0 are sunk the letters or other devices to be raised upon the circumference of the disks This device is designed especially to form the letters upon the wheels of printing-telegraph instruments, hand stamps, 850., but may be used with equal advantage for various other purposes. V In this way the letters will be formed more uniformly and accurately than is possible when they are engraved in the ordinary manner, and at very much less expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the screw-collar B, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, with the segmental ring-dies O and bed or table A, as and for the purpose set forth.
