' OSCAR J. PUNGHES, OF PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN.
SPRING-TOOTH HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,256, dated January 4:, 1881.
Application filed November 10, 1880. (No-model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR J. PUNGHES, of Plymouth, Wayne county, Michigan, have invented an Improvementin Spring-Tooth Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to new and valuable improvements in the construction of harrows and cultivators, wherein are employed adjustable rigid and adjustable spring teeth, in combination.
The invention consists, primarily, in the peculiar construction of the combination-tooth, and, secondarily, in its combination and arran gement with a suitable frame, substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the combined teeth detached. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the frame of a triangular harrow, although the shape of the frame is not essential to the spirit of my invention so long as the combined tooth is attached in such a manner that the rigid portion of the tooth travels in front and a little to one side of the spring-tooth point, so that the rigid portion of the tooth will act as a colter acts upon plow, cutting sward in advance and at one side the following-path of the plow, which in this case is represented by the spring part of the tooth.
The combined tooth B is formed of bars or plates of spring steel into a curve, as shown, from a to the sharpened point. I). At the point a a twist is madein said bar, turning the rigid point 0 from the point a to the sharpened point cl, at right angles to the curved part of the tooth. A bend, c, is made in the vertical part of the tooth, by means of which and the twist at aapartialsooket, h, with three sides,
is formed to embrace the bar of the frame, to which the combined tooth is attached by pivotal bolt 2'. The socket being a little larger than the part of the frame to which it is attached, the operator, by loosening the nut which holds the bolt in place, may adjust the tooth to any desired pitch or angle and secure the same to such adjusted position by again tightening the nut.
If desired and deemed preferable, instead of securing the tooth to the frame, as above described, a clamp of any of the known constructions may be employed for the purpose. This barrow may be made in sections, which may be secured together by any suitable means.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A double barrow-tooth formed of a bar of curved spring metal with a rigid cuttingtooth in front and a spring-tooth in rear, substantially as described.
2. A double barrow-tooth formed of abar of curved spring metal with a rigid cutting-tooth in front and a spring-tooth in rear, the rigid cutting-tooth being twisted so as to present its edge to the flat portion of the spring-tooth, substantially as described.
3.' The curved double barrow-tooth B, havin g the spring point b, twist a, perforated socket h, and rigid cutting-teeth c, with its plane perpendicular to the flat portion of the spring-tooth 11, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a barrow-frame, A, of the curved double barrow-tooth B, having the spring point I), twist a, rigid cuttingtooth c, and pivotal bolt 1', substantially as described.
OSCAR J. PUNOHES.
