Application November 24, 1942, Serial No. 466,759
(01. loll-55) 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cheese presses, particularly of the domestic type, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means for firmly supporting and retaining the hoop and the perforated bottom.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a cheese press of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construe-- tion, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and till further objects of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a View in vertical section, taken substantially 0n the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the portion of the base on which the hoop and perforated bottom are mounted.
Figure 5 is a detail view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the follower.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that theembodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a supporting stand which is designated generally by reference numeral L The stand I includes metallic legs 2 of angular cross section having mounted on their upper end portions a top 3. Mounted on the lower portions of the legs 2 is an elevated base 4 having extending vertically therethrough and depending therefrom a centrally located drain tube 5.
Fixed on the base 4 is a ring 6 of suitable material. Extending inwardly from the ring 6 are radial ribs 1. The inner ends of the ribs 1 are spaced from the drain tube 5, as illustrated to a the hoop 8 is a bottom ll having perforations l2 therein. As best seen in Figure 3 of the drawings, the perforated bottom H is supported in spaced relation to the base 4 by the flange 9, the ring 6 and the radial ribs 1; Thus, drainage to the tube 5 is provided.
A removable follower I3 is operable in the hoop 8. The follower [3 includes an integral, centrally located upstanding socket I4, the purpose of which will be presently set'forth.
A nut or the like I 5 is fixed on the top 3 of the supporting stand I. A pressure screw I6 is threadedly mounted in the nut l 5, said pressure screw passing downwardly through the top 3. On its upper end, the screw 16 is provided with a T handle l1. At its lower end, the screw l6 terminates in a ball head l8 which is engaged in the socket l 4 for operatively and detachably connecting said screw to the follower l3.
In use, the perforated bottom II is placed in the hoop 8 and a disk of suitable fabric is placed on said bottom. The hoop 8 is then lined with the fabric, after which the curd is packed in said hoop. A fabric disk is then placed on the curd and the follower I3 is mounted thereon in the hoop 8. The assembly is then positioned in the stand I and the screw I6 is engaged in the socket [4 of the follower [3. Of course, the pressure is then applied by turning the screw [6 downwardlyin an obvious manner.
It is believed that the many advantages of a cheese press constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a cheese press, in combination, a flat horizontal base plate having a plane upper surface and provided with a central drain tube, a hoop comprising a vertical open-ended cylinder having a flat horizontal inturned annular flange at its lower end flatly resting on the base plate concentric with said drain tube, a flat annular ring fixed on the base plate and snugly fitting within said flange, said ring having a plurality of similar equally-spaced radial ribs projecting inwardly therefrom and terminating outwardly of the drain tube, said ribs being free of connections except at their outer ends with the ring, the flange, ring and ribs being of similar uniform thickness throughout, and a flat perforated disk removably fitted in said hoop and resting horizontally on the flange, the ring and the ribs in uniformly spaced relation to the upper plane sur face of the base plate.
