To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT B. HUGUNIN, of New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Hinged Shoes for Horses or other Animals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.

My improvement relates to animal-shoes which are hinged at the toe or forward end, so that thesidescan move out and in to conform to changes in the foot. Such shoes have been heretofore constructed with the joint parallel to the plane of the shoe, halved together, and united by a rivet or pin.

My invention consists in the construction of the calk-lip of hinged shoe, beveled on its upper side, with the bevel extending from the connecting end of the side piece of which it forms a part to the outer end of the lip, with a corresponding bevel on the under side of the hinged end of the opposite'side piece of the shoe, the object being to strengthen the connection of the lip with its side piece, allowing the latter to wear out without becoming disconnected from the former, and to avoid the cutting away .and consequent weakening of the opposite side piece.

My invention further consists in combining, with the hin gin g-lip of hinged shoes, a beveled calk, the said calk preferably covering the entire under surface of the lip, the object being to obtain greater durability in the hinging parts by increasing the wearing-surface of the calk and my invention further consists in constructing, with the beveled lip above referred to, a solid pivot or rivet formed in one piece with the lip, for securing the two parts of the shoe movably together, the object being to overcome the Weakness of a loose rivet in uniting the beveled surfaces of the two the case of a solid pivot or rivet made directly upon the lip, adds .to thelength of its diameter or foundation and consequent strength.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my intention, Figurel is a planview of the disconnected parts of the hinge, showing the beveled lip and the beveled connecting end of the opposite side piece of the shoe. Fig. 2 is a front view of the beveled calk as constructed on the hinging-lip. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section showing my improvements. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the upper and under sides of my improved hinged shoe.

A is the side piece of the shoe, with which the beveled lip, the beveled calk, and the solid rivet are connected. A is the opposite side piece of the shoe, having the beveled hinging projecting end, corresponding with the bevel on the lip, to which it is riveted.

B is the calk-lip of the hinged shoe. B is the beveled upper surface of the calk-lip B. This bevel extends from the hinge curve on the plate A to the extreme end of the lip. It is for the purpose of obtaining greater thickness of metal at the connection of the lip with the side piece, A, to enable that part better to support the lip, and through it the hinging parts of the shoe, until the sides A A are practical] y worn out. B" is the corresponding beveled surface on the hinging end of the side piece, A.

C is a beveled toe-calk, constructed, preferably, to cover and protect the entire surface of the lip B, the high or holding part of the calk being along the rear line of the lip B, with a taper toward the front line of the lip. This calk admits of being made of any desired thickness or taper, and it may be made square with the under surface of the shoe, or inclined, as shown in the drawings. With this calk much greater durability will be attained in the rear of the hinged parts of the shoe.

Dis a pivot or rivet, constructed directly upon the beveled surface B of the lip B. This bevel, adding to the extent of the base of the rivet, thereby increases the strength of its connection with the lip B. This rivet is made of any required size or taper, and its upper end is upset in a countersunk cavity in the upper side of the side piece, A, through which it passes, for the purpose of movably attaching 8. What I claim as my invention is 1. In a hinged animal-shoe, the calk-lip B, 5 provided with the plane beveled surface B,

in combination with the side piece, A, provided with the corresponding beveled surface B", substantially as described.
