Description

2 Sherets-Sheet l W. C. MAYER DRAWER SUPPORT Filed Sept. 30, 1942 pct. 24,v 1944.
Oct. 24, 1944,.' w. C. MAYER Y DRAWER SUPPORT Filed'septyso. 1942 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR WILLIAM C .MAYER ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 24, 1944 A UNirso isTitres"` PATENTTOFFICE My invention refers particularly to anti-frictionv multiple extension supports for `cabinet drawers wherein, broadly, the support'embodies a pair ofsliding rails which are movable in andfout from the cabinet and when the drawer is open y these sliding rails form what might be termed a cantilever support, lit being understood that the device as a whole can' be manufactured of wood, to culminate the present war restrictions.
vThe particular object of my invention'is to provide a drawer having strips attached thereto, provided with a plurality of roller-engaging iixed and floating -rails whereby, when the drawer .is drawn outwardly, the load is automatically transferred from one pair of anti-'friction rollers to another pair, whereby 'the load strain :is resisted, it being understood that thel extension'of the rails, form a progressive` movement, limited by inter-lockingpin stop means.
With the above and other minor objects inview the inventionv consists in certain peculiarities Vof construction and arrangement of parts, .aswill be hereinafter fully set forth in connection'with the accompanying drawings .and subsequently claimed.` Y A f Y,
In the drawings: .f
Figure 1 represents a sectional .elevation illustrating a fragment of acabinet together witha drawer equipped with cantilever slide vsupports embodying the features of my invention, the, section being indicated by line I-I of Figure 3.-
Figure 2 is a Aplan sectional viewxofithe same, the section being indicated by line. 2 2 of Figure l.
' Figure 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the slide rail mechanism, the section being indicated-by line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is'another cross `sectionalelevation of the slide rail mechanism, the section being indicated by line 4-4 of Figure 1 in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional elevation illustrating al locking and release mechanism for the drawer, the same being taken upon a plan corresponding to Figure 1 with the drawer slides in their distended position.
Figure 6 is a similar sectional view wherein the lock and release block is removed and the drawer is tilted from its normal position for removal.
Referring by characters to the drawings, I-I indicate the side walls of a filing cabinet and 2 the back wall; 3 indicates an indirect drawer supporting arrangement forming a bottom wall of the cabinet and 3 a similar drawer supporting arrangement or wall, it being understood that the vApplication September 3.0, 1942, Serial No. 460,255 2' Claims. (01.45-77) cabinet isv provided with a series of suchdivisions (not shown). Secured .to the side walls I is a pair of horizontally disposed fixed trackfrails4, extending from the back wall to a point adjacent thefront or'mouth ofthe cabinet. These fixed rails are shown in dove-,tail connection with the side walls I but .obviously any other suitable means may be employed for securing the same.
r The sides'5 of the drawer have attached thereto horizontally disposed strips 6, preferably 'counter .sunk into said side walls and positioned directly under the strips 4. As best shown in lFigurel of the drawings the drawer strips 6 are provided with a pair of lower spaced anti-friction rollers 'I-'I projecting slightly below thelower face vof said stripand the same are also provided with rollers 8 positioned in the rear of said strips, it f .being understood that these rollers are mounted in cavities formed in the strips for convenience in manufacturing and that said rollers 8 project above 'the top faceof the strip, adapted to engage the lower faces of the rails 4,` as best illustrated in Figures l` and 4 of the drawings.
The drawer proper is of standard construction having a front panel 9 which fills the mouth of thecabinet cell when the drawer is` closedand the rear panel I0 of said drawer extends slightly above the upper edges of the side walls 5.
Slidably mounted in the drawer cell and directly under `the strips 6. arel a pair vof floating 'track rails II.
The floating track rails are 'formed with pockets -in their front portion for the .reception of pairs which forms a 4drawer supporting arrangement, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3.
. The rear .ends of the floating track rails II are provided with upward projections havingmounted therein anti-friction rollers I2", which rollers are adapted to engage the fixed track rails 4 under certain conditions. l
The rear end of each iioating rail I I' is provided with an upper channel I 3 and a lower channel I4. The upper channel is engaged by a stop pin I5, extending downwardly from the drawer strip 6 and the lower channel is similarly engaged by a stop pin I6, which extends upwardly from the drawer supporting wall 3. i i
Under certain conditions it is desirable to bodily remove the .drawer from its cabinet cell and with this in View the front ends of the fixed track rails 4 are stopped short of the front face of the cabinet, as best illustrated in Figures 1, 5 and 6,
The spaces between the panel 9 and front ends of said fixed track rails are filled in, at this gap,
by removable stop blocks I1, which blocks carry tongue pieces I1' in grooved and dove-tail union and locks these associated partsr detail, it is understood that I may vary such details within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
- l. In a cabinet having side walls and a drawersupporting bottom wall, a drawer havingq side walls and front and rear panels movable in the cabinet; the combination of van extensible support for the drawer, comprising a pair of fixed track rails secured to the side walls of the cabinet, strips secured to the drawer side Walls under the fixed rails, a pair of longitudinally disposed floating track rails, positioned under the drawer strips and slidably mounted upon the cabinet bottom wall,
` said oating track rails being provided with upblocks I1 are disconnected from the ends of the track rails 4, by loosening thels'crews '|8, whereby the rear rollers 8 of the drawer strips are freed from engagement with the said blocks andhen'ce the rear end of the drawercanfno'w be'tilted np- Wardly as indicated'in Figure 6, :whereby` the pins I5 maybecleared from the floatingrail channel In the operation vofthe cabinet drawer, when the same is pulled out, the initial movement causes the rollers .1 tofrun voff the front4 endo the track rail lIl. Incidentalqto lthis movement the rollers 1', due tofsaid'conditons, will "act as a fulcr'um, whereby the rear rollers Il reverse the load strain, transferring thesame tothe fixed.
track rail '4 in what mightbe termed a cantilever movement. yWhen the drawer :reaches approximately one-half of itsopen position, -the stop pin I5, will engage the front end of the channel I3y and thereby pickup the floating-.track rail II and cause .the 'same to be moved forward, to the position indicated lindotted lines in Figure-1. In this movementwhenv the front rollers I 2 ofthe floating track rail, leave the cabinet support lwall 3, the oating rail I I is now fulcrumed 'upon the roller 'I2,and 'willcausethe load strain to be reversed and exertedr upon thefixedtracktby the roller I2, 'associated'with the-floating Iriail, thus developing the same 'cantilever 'movement previously described'with reference to the- drawer strip rollers 1,1.
Hence sagging 4of both thefinrrer vend" of I:the
ldrawer strip *Sand the floatingftrackrail fll is checked at'the back portionsv thereof by rollers 8 and I2, which engage the xed rail 4 "atvspaced intervals.
From the foregoing description rected to the fact 'that a simple, economical and effective 4cabinet having extension drawer supports is provided, wherein all metallica-parts usually employed 'are'dispensed with and the cabinet drawers are not 'only efficient and :durable-in operation but the f entire *assemblage presents practically the same appearance as a metalfcabinet.
