INVENTOR ALBERTQM/ZZY ATTORNE Patented Sept. 19, 19 44 2,358,584. GRINDING MACHINE Albert D. Mizzy. New York, :N. Y Eleanor Mizzy, New York,
. OF FlC-E assignor to N. Y!
Application June 2, 1942, Serial No. 445,417
This invention relates to grinding machines, and more specifically to a machine for grinding the tips of hypodermic injection'needles or similar objects. The invention has for its principal object the massgrinding of such objects as a constant, continuous process. I
To accomplish the above result there is provided a holder for the needles which is designedto be automatically closed after the needle is in holding position and automatically released to permit withdrawal ofthe needle when the grinding operation is completed and to permit reception of an unground needle.
.It is a further objectof this invention to provide a grinding machine for hypodermic injection needles in which the bevel on the needle tip will be determined independently of the operator and will therefore be uniform for all needles.
Still another-object of this invention is to provide a grinding machine wherebyneedles of different lengths maybe ground chine.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent in the following description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing,
. Fig. 1 is a plan viewof a modified form of my invention.
Fig.2 :is a section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. s
Fig. 3 is a section line 3 3 of Fig.2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the form of this invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, there is shown a machine which is adapted for the grinding of needles of various lengths. In this form, the stop whichdetermines the projection of the needle point through the chuck arm is not the head of the needle, since this would mean that needles of various lengths would project different distances through the chuck arm. Instead, the stop is positioned at the forward end of the needle and adaptedto engage the point of the needle at a. fixed distance of projection beyond the chuck arm. Thus needles of different lengths would have their tips at a constant point relative to the chuck arm but would extend rearwardly to varying distances. For this purpose, the turret T' carries a plurality of chucks H, positioned around the periphery thereof, and having a spring-pressed plunger 50 adapted to engage a fixed cam A which presses theplunger outwardly, in this case, against the action of spring 5|, to move the perforation 52 taken substantially on the in the same mav with cam A.
1 stop and therefore is 4 Claims. (Cl. 51-134) 7 extending "through thepplunger away from the end of chuck arm 53. This releases thepressure on any needle which is in position within the perforation 52 and permits the needle to be withdrawn or inserted. When the plunger head 55 moves out of engagement with cam A, the compression spring which is positioned between the chuck arm and the piston head pushes thepiston inwardly to bring the needle firmly against the end of chuck arm 53 and thus cause the needle to be held firmly within perforation 52.
- To permit needles of different lengths to be ground, there is provided a stop member 60 designed to project into the when it is in position within perforation 52, so that the tip of the needle can extend no further than the stop 60. Thus, no matter how long the needle may be, it will project forwardly through the perforation 52 a constant distance, while the needles will extend rearwardly to various distances, depending upon their length. The stop 60 is pivotally mounted at 62 on the turret T and is in lowered position throughout the interval that the plunger head 55 is in engagement It is during this interval that the ground needle is withdrawn and an unground needle'is inserted in position. The unground needle is inserted in position, this position being the one Where the needle point has reached the projecting through perforation 52. for a constant distance irrespective of its length; The stop 60 is effective throughout the period that plunger head 55 engages cam A and for the distance beyond that point during which the plunger 50 has moved inwardly to grip the needle firmly against the end of chuck arm 53. It is now no longer necessary to have the stop 60 in position, because the needle is firmly held with its point projecting at a fixed distance through the perforation 52, and, moreover, the stop must 'be moved out of the way before the needle reaches the grinding wheel surface so that the needle tip may be ground. Therefore, just before the I needle reaches the grinding wheel, a fixed cam is provided which engages stop 60 to lift said stop around its pivot 62 out of engagement with the tip of the needle to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 7. Thus, while the needle is traversing the grinding wheel G, the stop is in ineffective position, but when,
the needle has passed beyond the grinding Wheel, in other words, when the grinding operation is completed, the stop again drops to its lowered position because projection H rides off the cam path of the needle 3l' under a projection H of the I and the stop is now in effective position so that when the head 55 of plunger 50 engages cam A to move the plunger 50 outwardly and thus release the needle, the needle will :be held in its position and will not drop further through the perforation.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have herein described the principle and operation of my invention, together with the apparatus whichInow consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other equivalent means. while it is designed to use the various features and elements in the combination and relations described, some of these may be altered and others omitted without interfering with the more general results outlined, and the invention extends to such use.
