EDWARD WELLS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ANTl-CHAFING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,599, dated December 14, 1886, Application filed May 11, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Chafing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figure's of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and usefuldevice for preventing chafing at the crotch of the legs when walking; and it consists of a pair of anti-chafin g shields, made of leather or other suitable material, each one of which is independent ofits fellow, and held in its proper place on the inside of the leg at the crotch by means of straps secured to a belt or waistband, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of one of the anti-chafing shields.
a to represent the anti-chafin g shields, and b I) represent straps or bands depending from the belt or waistband B, to which the forward ends, a a, of the said anti-chafing shields are buckled or otherwise secured, as shown in Fig. 1.
b b represent bands or straps connecting the rear ends, awe, of the shields a a to the belt or waistband B, as shown, which latter bands or straps I prefer to make of some elastic material, so as to allow them to yield when the wearer is in the act of sitting down, and thus prevent unnecessary binding.
Theapparatus beingputin place on the body, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be seen that each leg can be moved with freedom and ease, and that they are prevented fromchating against each other by the use of the suspended shields a a, and thus relieve persons troubled with chafing from a very great annoyance and inconvenience in walking.
The shields a a should be made of leather, celluloid, or other suitable material that will retain its shape without crinkling or doubling up, so as to rest smoothly and evenly upon the fleshy portions of theinside of the legs. These shields a are formed with the tapering ends a k a, to which ends the straps I) b are connected. The tapering form of these said ends adapt them to fit the body of the wearer and to conform to the shape of the person between the thighs and body.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed anti-chafing device, consisting ofthe shields a (1, adapted to fit against the inner sides of the leg of the wearer below the crotch, said shields being formed with tapering ends a a,'and connected, by the straps b bf, with.
the front and rear sides of a belt, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. EDWARD WELLS. Witnesses:
ALBAN ANDREN,
HENRY OHADBOURN.
