Description

(No Modelqflf S. WEDEL'ES. Means for Attaching-Looks] 'No. 235,598; Pa tented Dec. 14,1880.
N. PErERs, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON WEDELES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEANS FOR ATTACHING LOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,598, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filedJune 5,1320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SoLoMoN WEDELEs, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Means for Securing Looks in Place, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide.
fingers, for entering the edge of the article to which the lock is to be secured and retaining it against movement sidewise, outward, and inward.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a lock embodying myinvention and a screw designed to be used to secure its lower part in place, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a section of a drawer with such a lock applied to it.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a lock, which may he of any approved style-such, for instance, as one having a platemetal case.
B designates what I term flanges or fingers, of which there may be any suitable number, extending rearwardly from the top plate of the lock, and shown as formed therewith.
The lock is designed to be fitted against the back of the drawer O, or other article to which it may be applied, without being mortised into it, unless for some extraordinary reason it may be desirable so to do, and the flanges or fingers Bare intended to be, under ordinary circumstances, fitted into mortises or recesses in the top or edge of the drawer or other article, as shownin Fig.2. Extending from the flanges or fingers B, and paralled, or nearly parallel, with the back of the lock, are pins or prongs D. They are rigidly secured to the flanges or fingers, and when the lock is in place fit in recesses in the edge of the drawer O or other article, and secure the upper or outer part of the look from being detached by a transverse or backward movement, and also against movement sidewise.
E designates a screw, which passes transversely through the lower part of thelock and enters the back of the drawer O or other article, thereby retaining the lock in such position as to preclude the detachment of the pins or prongs D, and securing the lower or inner part of the lock to the drawer or other article.
It is obvious that, inasmuch as the flanges or fingers are rigidly or inflexibly attached to the lock, the lower part thereof will be caused to hug the inside of the drawer tightly; and it is also obvious that, as the prongs or pins D enter the edge of the drawer, convenience is afforded forapplying such locks to drawers having fronts of different thickness without the necessity of cutting or mortising upon the inside of the front.
It will be seen that by my invention I provide for very quickly and easily attaching and detaching a lock without entailing any necessity for mortising the lock into the article on which it is used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the lock A, of one or more rigid or inflexible fingers or flanges, B, extending from the top or one end thereof, for overlapping the edge of the article to which the lock is to be secured, and one or more pins or pron gs,D,extending in a direction parallel to the length of the look from and rigidly attached to said fingers or flanges, for entering the edge of the article to which the lock is to be secured and retaining it against movement sidewise or outward or inward, substantially as specified.
SOL. WEDELES.
