Description

' Aug- 8, 1 944- v L R. PROULX" 5 WATERPROOF FIXTURE FOR FLUORESCENT LAMPS Original Filed Dec. '13, 1940 I60 R. PRO L x Patented Aug. 8, 1944 Leo Ralph Proulx, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor of one-hall to Henry Boorstin, Santa Monica,
Calif Refiled for abandoned application Serial -No. 369,959, December 13, 1940. This application September 30, 1943, Serial N0. 504,429
1 Claim. (01; 240-114) This invention relates to lighting fixtures and more especially to a water-proof fixture for fluorescent lamps, and is-a duplicate of applicants prior forfeited case Serial No. 369,959 filed Dec.
13, 1940, which is now abandoned.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and eflicient article of the character described.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive water-proof fixture for fluorescent lamps. i
A further object is to provide a water-proof and vapor-proof mounting for fluorescent tubes adapted for individual or group enclosure of the tubes.
Other objects and advantages will appear and l8 and is provided with a downward extending be brought out more fully in the following speciflcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation view in section, showing an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the mounting castings.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to, Fig. 1, showing a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a-sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the parts shown in Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I show a tubular pedestal l0 having a threaded portion adapted to engage the threaded portion I 2 of a circular casting IS, the latter having a bore I4 in which is mounted a pipe l5 supporting an outlet IS, the latter having a pipe connection H for the support of a top casting l8.
A plurality of fluorescent tubes l9 are provided with receptacle elements and 2| secured to castings l3 and I8 respectively and a plurality oi. wall members 22 winch are secured between elements 20 and 2| and secured to a plurality of tubular elements 23, suitably secured to pipe l5.
Casting l3 has a flanged portion 24 and a flanged portion 26, forming a groove 26 to receive a cylindrical glass shell 21, a suitable gasket 28 being provided in groove 26 between the glass and flange 25, the rim of the latter being lower than the rim of flange 24 in order to prevent any possible seepage of water into the-interior in the event of leakage or gasket 28. Plate I! has similarly flange for eave portion 30 to further prevent the admission of moisture at the top of shell 21.
In Figs. 4 to 6 I show a modified form of the invention wherein a lower casting 3|, having flanged portions 32 and 33 similar to flanged portions 24 and 25 to provide support for a cylindrical member 34, has an internal flanged portion 35. A cylindrical supporting member 36 is supported on member 34 and secured to flanged portion 35 and in turn supports a cover element 31 having an eave portion 38. An annular flange member is secured within member 34 and is pro- 'vided with a plurality of tube sockets 40 for the lower end of fluorescent tubes 4|, each of which extends through a flanged opening 42 in member 34. A glass sealing tube 43 is provided for each tube 4| and suitably sealed to flanged portions 42.
' An upper socket element 44 is provided for each tube 4| and suitably secured to element 36. A plate member 45 is provided with a sealing flange 46 for welded attachment to eave portion 38 and s is provided with a plurality of circular apertures down-turned flanged portions 24a and 25a Iorming a groove 28a, also provided with a gasket 21a and adapted to receive the upper rim of shell 21. A suitable cover element 29 is secured to casting 41 for tubular members 43. -Apertures 41, each having an extension cut-out portion or slot 48, in order that the cover unit may be removed and plate 45 passed over starting coils 49, secured to socket elements 44.
In the foregoing description it should be clear that I have provided 'a novel water-proof mounting for vertically positioned fluorescent tubes in a fixture adapted for outdoor use and particularly adapted for a fixture similar to filling station pump units. The seal between tubular elements 2! and 43 and the castings I3, l8 and 3| is such as to render a water-proof and gas-proof construction for housing the fluorescent tubes.
Having described my invention, what I claim members each having one end secured to the flange of one of said flanged apertures and the other end extending through one of the apertures of said plate portion, for enclosing a fluorescent tube.
