1 Claim.
This invention relates to a nether garment, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a garment especially designed and adapted for use as swimming trunks.
It is also an' object of the invention to provide a garment of this kind wherein is eliminated the use of buttons, belts, cords, tying members or other securing parts or attachments extending beyond or attached to the garment proper.
The invention also has for an object to provide a garment of this kind which requires no pleating or Vfolding and which consists of two trapeziform portions having the shorter of the parallel sides of each of the portions connected.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a, garment of this kind which is adjustable to persons of various sizes and proportions and which readily adjusts itself to all attitudes and movements of the wearer without binding, strain or discomfort.
The invention also contemplates as an object to provide a garment of this kind which can be readily and conveniently dried after use and with equal facility laundered when desired.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved nether garment whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that our invention may be better un- Figure 1 is a View in plan of a nether garment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, with portions broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a View in plan of one of the sections before being turned, a portion being broken away.
Figure 4 is a view in plan of the reinforcing means herein embodied, unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, the garment comprises two sections A of substantially duplicate construction and dimensions and each of trapeziform outline, with the shorter parallel edge of one section secured to the shorter parlallel edge of a second section, as indicated at While it is not desired to limit the invention to any particular dimensions, it has been found in practice of advantage to have the outer longer parallel edge 2 of each section A forty-four inches in length, with the shorter parallel straight edge five inches in length, or, in other words, having the longer parallel edge of each section A approximately nine times the length of the shorter parallel edge with, of course, the parallel edge centrally of the straight edge.
It has also been found practically desirable to have the two parallel straight edges of each of the sections A spaced apart eighteen inches. It is also preferred that the inwardly converging side edges 3 be each disposed on an angle of approximatelyA 45 degrees with respect to the longer` straight edge 2.
Inr the present embodiment of the invention, each of the sections A comprises two sheets l of fabric superimposed one upon the other and which are initially sewed along their longer parallel edge and their converging edges wrong side out, with the seams reinforced by a tape 5. After this formation of a section, it is reversed tov bring it right side out, after which the short parallel straight edges of one section A are sewed to the corresponding straight edge portions of the second section A.
The garment, as herein comprised, can be readily reversed in use or, in other words, either face is proper, and while it is preferred that the sheets 4 of each section A be identical as to material and pattern, this is not essential.
In use, the garment is applied to the person with the connected portion I placed transversely in the crotch. The front section A is drawn up to the wearers waist and the upper or outer corner portions thereof drawn behind the back of the person and tied in a hard knot at the middle of the back of the wearer. The rear section A of the garment is drawn up to the middle of the wearers back and the outer corner portions brought around and tied at the front of the person at the waist line. If the rear section A is drawn up rst, the front section A will then cover the frontknot of the rear half so that the only visible knot will be to the rear of the person.
Should the garment be large in proportion to the wearer, it may be adjusted to the size of the wearer simply by folding down the upper edges of the sections A before the knots are tied.
To further strengthen the garment, each of the sections A at its shorter or parallel side has sewed therein between the sheets 4 the diamondshaped piece B.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a nether garment constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience the parallel edges of the sections being bisected by a line passing through the mid-points of the longer edges and being joined together, each of said sections comprising two duplicate superimposed pieces of material, and a diamond shaped reinforcement bridging the joined shorter edges and secured between the pieces of the two sections.
