Description

`J. GBARON. T001v Handle.
NQ.- 235,426. Patented Devc. 14,1880.
. Mllmm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GEARON, OFBELOIT, IOWA.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,426, dated December 14, 1880.
` Application filed May 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Be. it known that I, JOHN GEARON, of Beloit, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa,
ot'onc of the bars used for securing the handle to the ax.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts.
A represents an ax, which, instead of being formed with an eye, is provided with two recesses, a a, on the exterior, at points opposite each other corresponding with the point at which the eye is usually located. 'lhese recesses a are'slightlytaperin g, and their sides are of dovetail form.
B B represent two bars, each of which is tapering and of dovetail form, corresponding exactly in shape and dimensions with'the recesses c c for a distance equal to the width of the ax. Beyond this distance, in a direction toward the handle, the bars are rounded and screw-threaded on their exterior surface, and provided each with a eoncavity or recess, b, on the interior surface. The outer end of each bar is provided with a ange, d, for engagel Fig. 3 is a view ot' theV -head of the ax. Fig. 4 is a perspective viewI ment with a shoulder, c, at the outer end ot' the recess a in the ax.
The handle E has a convexty to correspond with the annular recess b, and ashoulder to .correspond with the reverse shoulder ot' the bars B, so that the handle E and bars B may be securely attached together.
To attach the handle to the ax the bars B B are placed in therecesses c a of the ax. The handle E is then inserted between the bars and the parts larc secured by a ring-nut, G, screwed outside .of the bars and handle, as shown in Figs. l and 2. By this means the handle is held iirmly and securely in place, and may readily be tightened when necessary, or removed and replaced when desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire torsecure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a tool having dove tail side grooves, a., and shoulder c,'of two tapering bars, B, shaped to it said recesses, and having an end tlange, d, that engages the shoulder c, as described.
2. The bars B, formed with the recesses b `and flanges d, in combination with the ax or other tool having recesses a, and shoulders c, and with a handle, E, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with externally endthreaded bars B, having recesses b, of the handle E and ring-nut Gr, said. handle and bars having reverse locking-shoulders, as shown, and for the purpose specied.
JOHN GEARON.
