SEALING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,398, dated December 14, 1880.

To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERIC ANTHES, a native of France, residing at New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sealing-Presses, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The present invent-ionarelat es, primarily, to presses for use in applying lead and wire seals and cording seals to freight-cars, baggage, 850.; but it applies also to punches and presses for sealing cars, 8210., withseals having sheetmetal shackles, and to riveting and eyeleting presses, cutting pliers or nippers, and other analogous tools.
The objects of my invention are, first, to combine a shackle-cutter or the like with the parts which are essential to the sealing or other main operation, so as to secure simplicity andcompactness; second, to obtain and apply the requisite power for said main operation in an efficient manner with the fewest parts possible, and so as to avoid the use of joints impaired by wear; third, to facilitate separating and reassembling the parts in renewing or changing the dies or their equivalent. ,..,My.i.nvention consists, first, in a cutter or its equivalentand its anvil formed and arranged in a novelmanner; secondly, in a combined rolling fulcrum and knuckle of novel form; and,- thirdly, in the said rolling fulcrum and knuckle and a removable cutter so arranged as aforesaid, (incombination with certain parts which co-operate therewith-respect ively,)as hereinafter set forth.
The accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, show a hand-press and attachments thereto, illustrating the aforesaid in vention'.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The terms top and bottom, vertical, &c., are used with reference to the positions of the parts as viewed in Figs. 2 and 3.
The main parts of this press are two iron castings, A B, forming at one end a pair of handles, h M, and at the other end, respectively, a combined rolling fulcrum and knuckle, k, and a pair of rigid jaws, j j The back of the upperjaw, j, is cored in molding it, so as to form a vertical socket, s, to receive the knuckle it, and an opening, 0, extending from said socket in the direction of the handles. The walls of this opening are parallel, as are also the lateral walls of the socket s, and the shoulders which constitute the back of said socket are vertical and smooth; but its front wall is provided with a pair of transverse rackteeth or cogs, 0 c.
What may be termed the back of the knuckle 7c is fitted to said cogs, forming itself a single cog, with suitable rounded surfaces23 in frontand in rear thereof, while the remainder oftheknuckleiscylindrical. Beforetheknnckle k is inserted in its socketa guide-hole is bored in the bottom of the latter to receive a cylindrical upper die or follower, (J. A concentric socket is drilled in the lower jaw, 7' to receive thestem of a lower die or anvil, D, which is held in place by a set-screw, s, and a spring, E, is fastened upon the floor of said opening 0 by a set-screw, 8 The spring E is applied in a customary manner to lift the upper die or follower, and the top of the latter is fitted to the cylindrical body of the knuckle k, as shown in Fig. 2.
The part A, with which the knuckle k is integral, has been termed the working-lever. When this is in place, as shown, said knuckle, supported against displacement by the walls of the socket s, constitutes a fulcrum in connection with the cogs c c successively, and passes downward upon the follower O in line with its axis. The parts are shown in full lines in Fig. 2 as they appear at the end of the sealing operation. When the handles are separated to admit a seal-disk the follower rises to about the extent indicated by the line as, Fig. 2. The cog 1 of the knuckle k coacts with cog c to lower the follower above this point and with cog c to lift the knuckle; but during the pressing operation proper the fulcrum is formed by the surface 2 coacting with cog c and is thus located at the extreme end of the working-lever. Said cog 1 coacts with cogs c and c in the cnttingoperation, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the said shoulders, which constitute the back of the socket, coact with the round face of the knuckle to keep the cogs in mesh. The surface 3 of the knuckle coacts with cog c in separating and assembling the parts.
For the cutting operation the working-lever A is simply provided with a projection, 11, springing forward from a point on the back of the lever immediately behind the knuckle k, and furnished with a longitudinal socket, which receives the shank of a cutter, F, held therein by a set-screw, s and the part B is constructed with aprojection, a, in front, forming an anvil to coact with said cutter.
In the highest position of the handle h the working-lever operates with ample leverage to actuate said cutter, as illustrated by the figarcs, and by simply loosening the screw 8 and removing the cutter F a further movement of the lever backward is permitted, which separates the parts, the coaction of said surface 3 and cog c causing the knuckle to climb upward on said coguntil the socket sis cleared. The spring E, follower (J, and anvil D may now be successively removed, and themselves or interchangeable parts replaced with the utmost facility and dispatch.
The follower U and anvil 1) (shown in Fig. 2) are ordinary upper and lower sealing-dies, such as are used for compressing and impressing the soft-metal seal-disks of lead and wire seals and cording seals. In applying seals having sheetmetal shackles, for use with softmetal rivets, another operation is essentialnamely, the punching of the shackle.
Figs. 3, 3*, 3" illustrate the substitution of a punching and sealing follower, 0 for the follower C, and a counterpart anvil, D for the anvil D.
pp represent punches formed by steel nipples screwed into the head of the follower and having sharp pyramidal points adapted to easily penetrate sheet metal and to leave the displaced metal in attached spurs.
q q represent simple vertical orifices in the body of the anvil D, corresponding with the punchesp in position and size.
1* r represent central surfaces for compressing the rivets and impressing the same with any desired mark, and .1 y represent cylindrical portions of the respective parts, corresponding with the upper part of the follower C and with the stem of the anvil D, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be apparent that one or more punches of any preferred form may he operated in the same manner.
In adapting the press for riveting leather, an ordinary leathenpunch may be substituted for the cutter F, dies similar to O D being used for upsetting the rivets; and in eyeletingmachines the projections belonging to the cutter F may be omitted, and both punches attached to the transverse head of a follower similar to G with a counterpart similar to D, the respective punches being made to project laterally far enough for alternate use.
My combined rolling fulcrum and knuckle, Fig. 4, with its appurtenances, may also be used as a simple and etficient substitute for other means for obtaining and applying leverage in cutting pliers or nippers and other analogous tools in which rigid jaws are or may be used in connection with a sliding follower or the like and a working-lever; and my said arrangement of projections I) a, to adapt the working-lever to perform a minor operation in a second position in the manner aforesaid, may be embodied in tools of said class without said combined rolling fulcrum and knuckle.
Having thus described my said invention, I claim- 1. In a sealing-press or like tool having a working-lever adapted to perform a main operation in one position and to be turned backward to a second working position, the projection b, formed on the back of said lever, and provided'with a suitable cutter, in combination with a coacting anvil, a, formed on another part of the press, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. in a sealing-press or like tool having rigid jaws, a working-lever, and a sliding follower, the rollin g fulcrum and knuckle k, having a cylindrical body cut away to form a cog, 1, and cog-surface 2 within the circle of its circumference, and the socket 8, having internal cogs, c c", and a smooth back to coact with said knuckle, substantially as shown, for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, substantially as herein specified, of the working-lever A, having the projection b and combined rolling fulcrum and knuckle k, and the part B, having the recessed jaw j, constructed with the anvil a and internal cogs, c 0 and the cutter F, removable in the manner described, for the purpose set forth.
