My invention relates to a honing device for choked engine cylinders; that is, where th engine cylinder is slightly smaller in diameter at one end and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a honing device for engine cylinders of this type that is so constructed and arranged that the inner surfaces of the cylinders may be thoroughly honed and cleaned regardless of whether or not the cylinder has arcuate-like grooves or ridges around the inner surface of the cylinder wall caused by expansion and contraction of the metal in this type of cylinder;
Second, to provide a honing device of this class which will depres in portions and expand in other portions depending upon the surface of the cylinder to be honed, thereby cleaning the inner surface thoroughly and at the same time saving the necessity of cutting away the inwardly extending ridges in the cylinder wall;
Third, to provide a honing device of this class in which the pressure of the honing surface is resiliently supported to take care of the variations in the cylinder wall;
Fourth, to provide a honing device of this class by the use of which the hone only takes away what is necessary from the inner wall of the cylinder to properly clean the cylinders;
Fifth, to provide a honing device of this class which provides a finer micro finish to the cylinder wall and will not unduly reduce the chokes in the cylinder; and
Sixth, to provide a honing device of this class which is applicable for use in connection with various types of honing heads now in use connected with conventional honing machines; and
Seventh, to provide a honing devic of this class which is very simple and economical to manufacture, highly efiicient in its action and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my honing device shown positioned in a choked engine cylinder, shown by dash lines, and showing inwardly projecting curved ridges or wrinkles therein; Fig. 2. is an end view of the cylinder and showing a plurality of my honing devices arranged in operative relation in the cylinder and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken from the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing.
The abrasive honing members i, resilient hone support 2, and holder 3 constitute the principal parts and portions of my honing device.
The holder member 3 is preferably a channellike member of suitable length and size to fitin the conventional head of a conventional cylinder honing machine. Positioned in the bottom of this channel member is a resilient member 2 which may be made of rubber, cork, or other similar resilient material and preferably secured therein by means of an elastic adhesive 21), and positioned on this resilient member 2 and positioned between the extending members of the holder member 3 and preferably secured therein by an elastic ad hesive 2a is a plurality of abrasiv honing membars I, which are substantially one-half inch in length and extend a considerable distance past the edges 3a and 3b of the holder member 3. It is preferred that the end members be slightly longer, as shown at la and lb in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The operation of my honing device for choked engine cylinders is substantiall as follows:
A plurality of the devices is positioned in the conventional honing machine head in spaced relation to each other around the inner side of the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and the conventional honing machine is operated revolving the head together with these honing devices and at the same time shifting the head together with the honing devices longitudinally in the cylinder. The choke cylinders, particularly, sometimes have inwardly extended ridges or wrinkles R or grooves G and with the revolution and longitudinal movement of the device the separate sections tend to be depressed or expanded in the holder 3 by reason of the resilient member 2 and these relatively short members tend to tilt slightly to fit the wrinkles and curved recesses in the cylinder walls, thus thoroughly cleaning the cylinder wall without undue cutting away portions of the cylinder wall.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a honing device of the class described, the combination of a channel-shaped holder member, resilient means mounted in said channel member and extending from end to end thereof, an abrasiv honing member secured in said. channel member and restin on said resilient memher, said abrasive member divided into a plurality of relatively short contiguously positioned end to end sections freely movable and tiltable relatively to each other.
2. In a honing device for choked engine cylinders, the combination of a channel member arranged to fit in a conventional head of a conventional cylinder honing machine open at its outer side, a plurality of relatively short abrasive honing members resiliently supported end to end in said channel member and arranged to shift inwardly and outwardly and tilt therein relatively to each other.
3. In a honing device for choked engine cylinders, the combination of a channel member arranged to fit in a conventional head of a conventional cylinder honing machine open at its outer side, a plurality of relatively short abrasive honing members resiliently supported in said channel member and arranged to shift inwardly and outwardly therein relatively to each other, said relatively short members being spaced from each other to permit relative tilting of said members.
4. In a honing device for choked engine cylinders, the combination of a channel member arranged to fit in a conventional head of a conventional cylinder honing machine open at its outer side, a plurality of relatively short abrasive honing members resiliently supported in said channel member and arranged to shift inwardly and outwardly therein relatively to each other, said resiliently supported members supported in spaced relation from the bottom of said channel member by rubber cushion means.
