This invention relates to improvements in cylinder hones.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a cylinder hone which is well adapted for deglazing internal combustion engine cylinders, and is capable of being used in an engine installed in a motor vehicle, even when it is overhung by other parts and direct access to the cylinder is not possible.
Second, to provide a cylinder hone which is Well adapted for the deglazing of cylinders and which may be effectively used even when the operator must Work well to one side of the cylinder operated upon.
Third, to provide a cylinder hone having these advantages and which also has the advantage of the hones and wiper blades with which itis equipped being mounted to permit automatic adjustment to a cylinder Wall which has been worn tapered or out-of-round, and at the same time they are effectively supported for performing their functions.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims. y
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 2 is an elevational view partially in section illustrating an engine block in relation to parts of an automobile body With the hone of my invention shown in one operative position, a driving unit being shown conventionally by dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on a line corresponding to lines 3 3 of Fig. 4 with the hone in operative relation with a cylinder as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View mainly in longitudinal section on a line corresponding to broken line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawing I represents a cylinder block and 2 a Wall portion of the engine housing having a portion 3 overhanging a portion of the cylinder block 4.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a head member 5 having axially spaced crossheads 6 carrying the angularly spaced pivots 1 for the holder arms B. In this embodiment The pivots 'I are parallel to the axis of the head or body member.
The body member is provided withv a shank 9 which is externally threaded and has an inter-'- nally threaded bore I0. The holder arms Shave slots II in their outer ends in which the flanges I2 of the too1 holders I3 are tiltably mounted as by means of the pivots I4. The inner edges I5 of the holders I2 are slightly spaced from the bottoms of the slots as shown in Fig. 3 to permit limited axial tilting movement thereof. the purpose of Which will be pointed out later.
Each holder arm is provided with a supporting pin IB, the pins being engaged with the arms in spaced relation to their pivots. These pins are in supporting engagement with the adjusting cone I8. The pins are resiliently springable to permit the blades 'to` conform to out-of-round cylinders. The adjusting cone is threaded upon the shank of the head member and is desirably knurled at I 9 to facilitate grasping. The pins are yieldingly urged against the adjusting cone by means of the springs 20 which are connected at one end tc the pins and at the other end to the pivots 'I vWhich are extended at their outer ends to constitute anchoring studs for the springs as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In the embodiment illustrated I show two hone blades 23 and two Wiper blades 24, these being mounted in alternating relation on the holders. 'Ihe hone blades are desirably of a suitable grade of Carborundum or the like, while the Wiper blades are rectangular sections of felt', desirably quite compact or hard felt.
The drive shaft designated generally by the numeral 25 comprises an outer rigid or, relatively unbendable section 26 having a tang 21 at its outer end adapted to be engaged with the chuck 28 of a portable electric drill 29 or the like. The inner bendable section 30 of the shaft is resiliently bendable and consists of a section of rubber hose 3| reinforced by fabric 32 and wire strands 33 as is conventionally illustrated, see Fig.` 4. The tubular element 3I is fixedly connected by the coupling 34 to the outer section 26 and is provided with a coupling 31 which is pinned thereto at 38 and has a threaded tang 39 threaded into the shank of the head member, the coupling having a shoulder 40 abutting the end of the shank.
To prevent collapsing and buckling of .the tubular element 30 0f the bendable section of the shaft I insert therein a helically coiled spring 4I. The spring is a close fit within the element 30 but is not connected thereto other than being in supporting engagement with the walls thereof. The spring 4I is closely coiled and prevents the collapsing of the wall and sharp buckling or kinking of the section 30 as it is bent and torsional stress is applied thereto. The spring also tends to straighten the element 30 after it has been flexed of: bent. The ends of the spring are not connected to the coupling members 26 and 37 but are desirably in end thrust supported engagement therewith. j
It is a matter of common observation that cylinders of infernal combustion engines become glazed as a res'ilt of use so that when new piston rings are installed they do not wear in promptly or eiectively, and various means have `been Cylinresorted to to remove or score the glaze. der hones are one means that has been'used for that purpose. While the applicants hone is desirable for use in hone nishingcylinders, .itis particularly desirable for use in deglazing cylinders in installed engines, particularly where certain of the cylinders may be located so that directgaccess cannotbe--had thereto. ,The hone blades and `wiper blades of this 4invention Vare mounted vand supp-orted so that they eiectively ,conform .to vthe cylinder wall, but Vremove `the glaze andthe `high spots which-commonly result ,or come about from Vthe distortion and seasoning ofthe cast iron cylinder block in use. The flexible shaft'permits ,the hone to follow the cylin- .der 'wall without any substantial canting vstress onxthe hone, and it-permits the usefof the Ahone in situations suchas is illustrated:conventionally infFig. 2.

In a cylinder hone the combination of a head member having axially spaced cross heads, angularly spaced tool arm pivots extending between said cross heads and disposed in parallel relation to the axis of the head member, holder arms mounted on said pivots between and axially supported by said cross heads, holders pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said arms for limited axial tilting movement thereon, hone and wiper blades mounted on said holders in alternating relation to each other, an inwardly facing adjusting cone adjustably threaded on said body member shank. springable supporting pins on said arms adjustably supported by said cone, retracting springs for said arms carried by said head member, a drive shaft for said head member comprising a substantially rigid outer section, and an inner bendably resilient tubular section of substantial length connected to said head member shank and to said outer section and comprising a section of reinforced hose, and a closely coiled helical spring disposed within said inner section and extending from end to end thereof in wall supporting non-torsional relation thereto.

In a cylinder hone the combination of a head member having axially spaced cross heads, angularly spaced tool arm pivots extending between said cross heads and disposed in parallel relation to the axis of the head member, holder arms mounted on said pivots between and axially supported by said cross heads, holders pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said arrnsfor limited axial tilting movement thereon, hone and wiper blades mounted on said holders in alternating relation to each other, an inwardly facing adjusting cone adjustably threaded on said body member shank, springable supporting pins on said arms adjustably supported by said cone, retracting springs for said arms carried by said head member, a drive shaft for said head 4member comprising a Substantially rigid outer section, and an inner section of substantial length connected to said head member shank and to said outer section.
