UNITEDV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS A. PIOKERING, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM WALKER. OF SAME PLACE.
MODE OF ATTACHING STRAPS TO BOOT-LEGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,582, dated April 5, 1859.
To (1.71 whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIrs A. PIGKERING, of Milford, in the county of llorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented eertain new' and useful Improvements in the Manner of Applying Straps to Boots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a portion of the leg` of a bootwith iny improved strap. Fig. 2 shows a section of the saine through the strap and Figs. 3 and l show some variations in applying and securing the strap.
The saine letters denote the saine parts in all and the red lines show" the strap in all.
In the usual way of applying the straps to boots it has been customary to leave the loop or upper part free under all the different ways of securing them whether the strap was siinply sewed to one side or in line work when the lining or the outside have been cut and the lower part or ends of the strap w'ere secured between the parte7 this leaving the loop part free to turn down be tucked in or otherwise disposed of is what my invention is designed to reinedy and consists in holding that loop in a convenient neat position, and to do this inake a cut through the boot leg A where it is desired to place the strap as at C D Fig. 1 cutting through both parts if there are two and passing one part of the strap on each side at the top insert the ends between the parts at the cut as shown in Fig. 2 and secure theni below' the cut in the usual way the place and outline of the strap being shown by the lines in red ink. The loop of the strap above the line C, D, being free the fingers can be inserted either' outside or in and when leftl the strap is supported and held in a snug position by the leather inside the loop thus keeping the strap from interfering with any part of the dress.
It is evident that the strap may be vari ously arranged in dierent ways as Figs. 3 and 4 show two variations and Various oth ers as putting one side clear through or by stitching or fastening one side of the loop to support it, all of which are mere variations of detail and not of principles of my invention.
I ain aware that it is not new to cut the leather or lining of the leg to insert the strap and this I do not claim; but
lVhat I claini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Supporting or retaining the loop or up per part of the strap in lthe manner and for the purposes substantially as above set forth and described.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set iny hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS A. PIOKERING.
