SNOW-SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 235,201, dated December 7, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BOND, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snow-Scrapers, ot' which the following is a specification.

My improvements relate to apparatus for removing snow, Ste., from the surface of ice on ponds and rivers where the ice is to be cut and gathered.

Heretofore scrapers have been used to carry the snow to one side, where it is dumped; but such scrapers have been cumbersome to handle, requiring two or three men for their operation, and Where banks of snow have been formed by previous scraping it is di-tticult to carry the scrapers over, and the ice-fields are seriously encroached upon by the banks formed in successive operations.

The object of my invention is to furnish a scraper that can be operated without these difficulties; and the invention consists in a pair of runners hinged to a cross-brace, whereby they may be connected at one end to form a V-shaped scraper for gathering the snow or allowed to run parallel for discharging the load; also, in brace-chains for insuring the parallel position of the runners, and in certain other novel features of construction, which will be described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan View of a scraper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view on line :v x of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the sliding catch for connecting the ends ofthe runners, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of one runner on line y y of Fig. l.

The boards or runners A are of suitable length and width, and are preferably' made of (No model.)

wood, strengthened by wearing strips f of metal lat their bottom edges. To the rear end of' each there are attached two straps, g, that have eyes formed in their outer ends similar to a hinge-strap. In the eyes of straps g on one runner is a loose pin, h, carrying hooked arms t' i', that are formed with lugs or pins for entering the eyes of straps g on the other runner, so that when the two runner ends are brought together they can be connected and held and released by raising pin h when desired. With the ends connected as mentioned a V- shaped scraper is formed, which is securely held and stiffened by brace B, so that as the scraper is drawn along the snow will be gathered between the runners.

As soon as the pin h is raised and the runners released the draft causes them to assume the parallel position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and the snow gathered is left behind.

The brace-chains b are of such length that the runners can move outward only the distance required to bring them parallel, in which position they are held by the chains.

Slotted brace-rods may be used in place of chains b; but I prefer chains, as they hang loosely and out of the way when the runners are closed.

This scraper can be readily operated by one man. When the runners are in an open position they will readily pass over banks and other obstructions, and the scraper can be turned easily.

Having thus described iny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. rlhe snow scraper consisting of sideboards or runners A, hinged to brace B, and provided with brace-chains b, draft'chains c, and devices at the rear ends whereby they can be connected or disconnected at will, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The apertured straps g, sliding pin It, and hooks i', combined with the hinged runners A and cross-brace B of the snowscraper,

substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In snow-Scrapers, the draft-chains c and hinges a, provided with shackles d, combined with the runners A and brace B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
