Among the numerous types of rail fasteners known those kdeserve preference that avoid the use of screws and hold down the rail base by means of a locking member-guided in a rib of an iron tie or a locking Aplate transversely to the longitudinal direction of the rail, as indicated for instance in German Patent No. 617,882. Rail fastenlngs of this class arewof exceedingly simple construction, permit easy and rapid installation of the rails and nevertheless insure suillcient protection .against unauthorized detachment. I.
In contradistinction to lthese known rail fastenings, however, in rwhich the, usuallyv slotted locking member is heldin the `guide rib by a key, etc. the invention proposes toprovide a locking member. ac tngas la tension lever.
The invention attains its object by providing the locking member resting with one end on the rail base on its other end with means for pressing off this end from the tie or other support, so that the locking member actsas a double-armed tension lever whosemfulcrumis klocated in the guide rib. In this way the rail vbaseisfixedwith increased security to its bed, even if the locking member is not placed inl accurate'position. This arrangement facilitates, moreover, the installation of` the rails and increases both the holding eiect and lthesecuritlr vof theV construe,.- tion, since the locking Ymemberis not weakened by slots, etc. The means` forpressing oli one end of thelocking member may be4 of various types, and several possibilities'v areV described below with reference to the a'ccorr'ipanyingA drawing, in which A Figure 1 is an elevation, partlyin longitudinal section, of a rail fastening according to the invention;

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the rail I shown in cross section rests on a tie 2 provided with a guide support 3 having a dovetailed recess for ction on the line 1li-II the reception of a correspondingly shaped solid locking member 4. The end facing the rail base possesses on its underside a clearance 5 for accommodating the portion 6 of the rail base to be engaged by the locking member 4. Thev end of the member 4 averted from the rail base has a threaded bore for the introduction of alifting screw 1. l.

Thenthe screw 1 is tightened so that its lower spherical, conical or other similarly shaped end 8 enters a recess 9 of the tie 2 and, thus, the locking member 4 is moved with the fulcrum located within range of the support 3. y
After the locking member 4 acting as a doublearmed lever has been xed the screw 1 may be secured against arbitrary turning by removing for instance the square I0.
`The rail base isthus securely xed, and the end of the screw 1 having entered the recess 9 prevents longitudinal displacement of the member 4 in the guide 3.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 to 5 the rail I rests again on a tie 2 provided with a guide support 3 having .a dovetailed recess for the reception of a correspondingly shaped locking member 4 which engages the portion rail base.
Forcing out or lifting is eiectedfwith the aid of a driving pin II which actsV upon a soft metal insertion I2 arranged in a recess provided in the respective end of the member 4 `andproceeding from the underside thereof. The soft metal I2 is not only forced up in the narrow annular gap formed between the pin II and its bore in the member 4, but caused also to spread downwardly on the underside of the'member 4 so as to lift the member 4 off from its support 2.
The means for preventing longitudinal displacement of the member 4 comprise slots I3 disposed transversely to the direction of displacement in the tie 2 within range of the soft metal insertion I2, having wedgelike cross sections and being filled with the soft metal when acted upon by the pin I I.

The pin II enters a conical insertion I 4 made of steel, etc. disposed in a conical recess proceeding from the underside of the member 4 within range of the bore for the pin II. 'Ihe insertion I4 has radial slots I5 and, when the pin II is driven in, is advanced downwardly and simultaneouslyr spread out, whereby the end of the member 4 is lifted from the tie 2 and held in lifted position.
Longitudinal displacement of the member 4 when in tensioned position is prevented by a platelike recess IB provided in the tie- 2 and engaged by the insertion I4 on being driven by the pin II.
What is claimed is:
1. A rail fastener comprising a tie upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of said rail, fulcru-m meansv xed to said tie for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other end at the underside thereof and a laterally distortable member normally disposed between said recess and the tie surface and when distorted owingbetweenthe lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever to lock -said rail to said tie and 'means for distorting said member.
2. A rail fastener comprising a tie' upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of said rail, fulcrum means xed to said tie'for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other end at the underside thereof, a soft metal laterally distortable plug positionedbetween said recess and the tie surface and when distorted e flowing between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever and, means for'distorting said plug soA as to pivot said lever about said fulcrum means to lock said rail to said tie.

A rail fastener comprising a tie upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of said rail, fulcrum means fixed to said tie for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other end at thev underside thereof, a soft metal laterally distortable plug positioned between said recess and the tie surface and when distorted flowing between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever and means carried by said lever for distorting said plug so as to pivot said lever about said fulcrum means to lock said rail to said tie.

A rail fastener comprising a tie kupon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one' en d engaging the base of said rail, fulcrum, means fixed to said tie for said lever, said lockinglever having a recess at its other end at the underside thereof, a radially slotted laterally distortable member of hard metal located between said recess and the tie surface and when distorted moving between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever and means for distorting said member so as to pivot said lever about said fulcrum means to lock said rail to said tie.
5. A rail fastener comprising a tie upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of said rail, fulcrum means fixed to said tie for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other end at the underside thereof, a radially slotted laterally distortable member of hard metal located between said recess and the tie surface and when distorted moving between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever and means mounted on said lever for distorting said member so as to pivot said lever about said fulcrum means to lock said rail to said tie.

A rail fastener comprising a tie upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of vsaid rail, fulcrum means xed to saidtie for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other endat the underside thereof, a laterally distortable member located between said recess and the tie surface and when Vdistorted Vmoving between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the leverand a rod Vcarried by said lever for distorting said member to pivot said lever about said fulcrum vmeans to lock said rail tosaid tie.

A rail fastener comprising a tie upon which a rail is mounted, a locking lever having one end engaging the base of said rail, fulcrum means xed to said tie for said lever, said locking lever having a recess at its other end at the underside thereof, a laterally distortable member located between said recess and the tie surface and' when distorted moving between the lever and the tie so as to act upwardly on the lever, a, rod carried by said lever for distorting said member to pivot said lever about said fulcrum means to lock said rail to said tie and means upon said tie cooperating with saidl member when distorted to secure said member to said tie.` y
