Description

May 23, 1944- c. E. HARTLEY' 2,349,425
DRAIN PLUG Filed Dec. 7, 1943 l2 vl-r' 4? j r g- Inventor Patented May 23, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRAIN PLUG Clarence E. Hartley, Salisbury, N. 0., assignor of one-half to William T. Gurlie, Salisbury, N. 0.
Application December 7, 1943, Serial No. 513,315
the gasket H against the outer rim of the nip- 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in drain plug for steam boilers, more particularly, the principal object in View being to provide a drain plug adapted to maintain a seal at a plurality of points thereby rendering the same absolutely leaf-proof, and which is adapted to obviate crossing of threads, is easy to install and adapted for manufacture at a low cost.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with referenc to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating my improved drain plug installed,
Figure 2 is a view in front end elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2 and drawn to an enlarged scale, and
Figure 4 is a View in transverse section taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improved plug, as shown therein, comprises a tubular drain nipple I having an externally threaded, tapered, rear end 2 for tapping into the wall 3 of a boiler, or the like, an externally threaded front end 4, an annular, internal groove 5 intermediate its ends for containing a resilient gasket 6, and an enlarged bore, as at l, forwardly of the groove 5.
For closing the front end of the nippl I, an elongated, cylindrical cap member 8 is provided having an internally threaded socket end 9 to be turned onto the front end 4 of said nipple, an internal, annular and larger groove Ill at the inner end of the socket concentric thereto and for containing an annular resilient gasket I I designed to be compressed against the outer rim of the nipple I, and a wrench hold nub [2 on the end thereof opposite the socket end 9.
A cylindrical pilot member I3 is provided in the socket end 9 and which fits in the enlarged bore 1 and is designed to bear against the gasket '6 when the member '8 is turned so as to compress ple I. The pilot member [3 has a reduced, axial, front end shank M externally threaded and tapped into the body of said member 8, and a wrench hold nub l'5 on its rear end.
The closure member 8 is designed to be applied along With the pilot member I3. As will be manifest, the described plug provides for effectively sealing the nipple l. The pilot member l3 prevents the threads of said connection from becoming crossed, in applying the closure member 8, in a manner which will be clear, and as will further be manifest, the entire structure is simple in form, easy to apply and inexpensive to manufacture.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, in susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A drain plug for boilers and the like comprising a nipple having an externally threaded rear end for connection to a boiler, an externally threaded front end, an annular internal groove therein intermediate said ends, and an enlarged bore forwardly of said groove, a gasket seated in said groove, a cap member turned onto said front end, and a cylindrical pilot in said cap member fitting in said enlarged bore and bearing against said gasket.
2. A drain plug for boilers and th like comprising a nipple having an externally threaded rear end for connection to a boiler, an externally threaded front end, an annular internal groove therein intermediate said ends, and an enlarged bore forwardly of said groove, a gasket seated in said groove, a cap member turned onto said front end, and a cylindrical pilot in said cap member fitting in said enlarged bore and bearing against said gasket, said cap member being provided with an annular internal groove surrounding the rim of said front end, and a gasket in said second groove bearing against said rim.
CLARENCE E. HARTLEY.
