oNirnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. NORTH, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,483, dated April 5, 1859; Reissued February 28, 1871, No. 4,284.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, riLBERT H. NORTH. of the city of Lartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the hfode of Regulating and Adjusting Lampicks while Burning; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and correct description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of a scroll and gear movements, to accomplish the purpose.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 side view of a lamp top. Fig. 2 a vertical section from w to 00. Fig. 3 an inverted view of the scroll and gears.
There are various kinds of lamps to which my improved, scroll and gears, may be attached. The apparatus of the top of the one accompanying this application and as shown in drawing, is very suitable and applicable and much needed. In the first place I construct the revolving plate A and attach it about half way between the bottom plate and screw B, and the top of the wick chamber C. and made so as to revolve by the action of vertical gear wheel I), actuated by the motion of the crank wheel G. is a matter of economy I make the vertical gear wheel D mesh into and operate the teeth of the horizontal plate A at right angles. making a firmer and a better combination than if they were beveled wheels, in consequence of being so thin.
On the underside of the plate A as shown in the inverted position in Fig. 3, I form a scroll elongated tooth suitable to work in the teeth of the four vertical gears E, E, E. E, so that when the plate A revolves itactuates all four (or more or less) of the gears E. the teeth of which I make of an angular or sharp form to perforate or press into the wick suflicient to hold the same to lift or lower without tearing or injuring the fiber. while raising or lowering.
The wheels E are supported by studs fixed on to a plate which is screwed down to the bottom plate H.
The vertical gear I) is supported by a stud I and the shaft works in a hollow bearing, and is operated by the movement of the crank wheel G.
The utility of this arrangement for rais ing and lowering the wicks of all kinds of lamps either circular or flat, is in the easy adaptation. and perfectness of operation.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The rotating plate A with the elongated scroll teeth, in combination with the vertical gears E, and the vertical actuating gear D in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described.
