Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
DAVID HOWELL, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TRIP-HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,804, dated April 10, 1860.
the hammer on which the cam is brought to bear and adapted through lever or screw and a clutch between whose sides it is laterally confined to receive movement and adjustment while in motion, so that the lift and consequent force of the blow of the hammer may be graduated to suit different work, or different stages of work under manipulation.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of a trip hammer embodying my improvement.
A is the base or foundation of the hammer.
B are pillow blocks forming supports and fulcrum for the hammer C.
D are pillow blocks in which the cam driving shaft E rotates.
F is a cone cam constructed with regularly tapering sides and with longitudinal key slots fitting keys e on the shaft E so as to permit the cam to slide freely upon the said shaft but prevent its rotation independently thereof.
G is a clutch adapted to slide in the bed plate A, and of such construction that the cam F may be laterally confined yet free to revolve between its sides g g. It is provided with a rod H by which through lever, screw or other familiar device it may be operated, and any diameter of cone cam F brought in working connect-ion with hammer C while the machine is in motion, for the purpose as above described of regulating the height of lift.
I is the hammer head; J, the anvil block, and K the t-ail block.
The above described device is applicable to any point of raising or operating forging hammers.
I am aware that sliding or adjustable cams have previously been employed for operating trip hammers with various lengths of stroke, but
I claim as new and of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the sliding conical cam F feathered shaft E, sliding clutch Gr, rod H and hammer C, when the parts are constructed combined and adapted in the manner set forth to admit of varying the stroke of the hammer while in operation.
In testimony of which invent-ion, I hereunto set my hand.
DAVID HOVELL.
