KING A. SCOTT, OF NEW DOUGLAS, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,619, dated November 16, 1880.
Application filed March 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KING AGRIPPA SCOTT, of New Douglas, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for enabling a person on horseback or in a vehicle to open and close the gate without dismounting or alightin g.
The invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination of levers and devices connected therewith, whereby the gate may be opened and closed by the manipulation of handles attached to the levers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the gate opened. Fig. 3 is a top view of the gate and gate-post. Fig. etis a side elevation of the post, operating levers, and sliding rail. Fig. 5 is a section on line as m of Fig. 4, with the elbow-lever in position and the gate shown in dotted lines. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the gate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The gate A has its hinge-pivots a a attached at a short distance from its rear end, and beyond these pivots rearward the gate is inclosed'with a boxing, A which is weighted so as to nearly balance the portion forward of the pivots. The hinge-pivots consist of pins extending upward and downward from the upper and lower rails of the gate. The upper pivot, a, is engaged by a strap, 11, forming a hearing, which is hinged to the gate-post B, so that it may be raised or lowered. The lower pivot, (0 engages with a lug, 0, attached to a sill or post set in the ground.
On the under side of the lower rail of the gate is an elbow-plate, D, which is fast to the lower end of a vertical rod, E, extending through said lower rail and through another rail in said gate. In the plate D is a slot, (1, through which the lower hinge-pivot, a passes and works freely. One arm, 0, of the plate D engages with a pin, f, on one end of a bracketplate, G, the other end of which is pivoted to a sliding rod or bar, H, lying on or near the (ModeL) ground, and having at its ends two levers, J J pivoted to posts 9' j and provided with handles 13 F. The other arm, 0, of the plate D is connected by a rod, l, with an arm, L, on one end of a rock-shaft, U, which passes horizontally through the lower rail of the gate, and carries at its other end an arm, L which engages with a catch, 1 on a post, Z and thus serves as a latch for holding the gate open.
At the upper end of the vertical shaft E is rigidly attached an arm, M, which is connected by two rods, on m with two elbow-levers, N N which are pivoted to the middle rail of the gate. The lever N works above, and the lever N below, a double-shouldered catch, P, in the striking-post p, and the two levers serve as a latch to keep the gate closed. The lever N is provided with a weight, W, to assist in its engagement with the catch P.
The gate being closed, as shown in Fig. 1, by moving the handle tori and lever J or J toward the right-hand side of the drawings, the rod or bar H and bracketplate G, acting on the plate D, first unlatches the gate by turning D on its pivot to open the latches N N and then swings it open until the latch L engages with the catch 1 and holds the gate open, as shown in Fig. 2. By moving the handle and lever in the opposite direction the arm L releases the latch L from the catch 1 and the continued action of the rod or bar H, bracket-plate G, and plate D closes and latches the gate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with .the gate A, of the levers J J rod or bar H, bracket-plate Gr, plate D, vertical shaft E, connecting-rods m m and latches N N for opening the gate, as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the gate A, of the levers J J rod or bar H, bracket-plate Gr, plate D, pivoted as described, connecting-rod 1, arm L, shaft L and latch L for closing the gate, as herein shown and described.
KING AGRIPPA SCOTT.
