Description

March 28, 1944. v E, HODALY 2,345,339
COMBINED COMB AND NAIL FILE Filed July 5, 1945 Snventor Emerz'c/c lfidaly attorne Patented Mar. 28, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates to pocket combs and particularly combs equipped with clips to retain them in garment pockets.
An object of the invention is topivotally mount a spring clip on an end of a comb, so that the clip, in functioning as such, may extend along a side face of the comb, and may be adjusted to alternatively form an endwise extension of and a handle for the comb.
'Another object is to provide means on the comb engageable by the clip in each of .its said positions to positively establish such positions.
Another object is to provide the comb with an integral lug overhanging the pivotal end of the clip and engageable by the clip to limit pivotal movement of the latter in each of its described positions.
Another object is to adapt the clip to serve as a nail file and nail cleaner, as well as a handle for the comb, when positioned'to form an extension of the comb.
These and various other objects are attained by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Pig. 1 is a top view of the comb and its clip, showing the latter positioned to exercise its clip function.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Pig. 4 is a top view of the comb and clip, showing the latter positioned as a handle-forming extension of the comb.
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the same.
In these views the reference character I designates a pocket comb formed of any suitable material and having at one end a lug 2 integrally Joined to the comb flush with its top edge, said lug projecting toward the toothed edge or bottom of the comb in a spaced, parallel relation to a side face of the comb. Snugly fitted between said lug and the adiacentface of the comb is one end of an elongated, metallic spring clip 3, formed preferably of hardened sheet steel, the other end of said clip being pointed, and a rivet or the like 4 being extended through the comb, lug and clip to pivotally mount the clip. The clip may be swung on said rivet to assume either pomtion illustrated by the drawing, lying along said side face in one such position and forming an endwise extension of and handle for the comb in its other position. Thus the clip has a swing of one hundred and eighty degrees, each of its limiting positions being positively established by contact of the clip with the root portion of the lug. To adapt the clip to function as such, it is oifset as indicated at I in close proximity to the lug 2, being spaced from the comb by such oifset. In extending from the offset to the free end of the clip, the latter converges gradually 5 toward the plane established by the adjacent face of the comb, being substantially tangential to such plane where its pointed free end portion begins and having such end portion diverged from said plane. Thus the clip may be readily slipped over the pocket-forming edge of a garment and its pressure on the garment will assure against any accidental escape of the comb;-
The pointed end of the clip facilitates slipping the clip over a garment edge and further adapts the clip for use as a nail cleaner, when the clip is endwise extended from the comb. To further increase utility of the described article it is preferred'to form both side faces of the clip with serrations adapting it for use as a finger nail file.
It is to be noted that when the clip is extended from the comb, as in Figs. 4 and 5, it may serve as a handle for use of the comb, and the latter may also serve as a handle for the nail file and nail cleaner formed by the clip in such extended position.
In case the depth of a pocket receiving the described article is greater than the length of the article, the lug 2 necessarily projects above the pocket edge, when latter is engaged by the clip, and such lug assures thatthe article may be conveniently gripped for removal from the pocket.
It is preferred to provide comparatively short the lug I is rounded so that it cannot interfere.
with the offset 5, as the clip is swung.
What I claim is:
1. An article of the character described, comprising a pocket comb, an elongated spring clip disposed exteriorly of the comb for securing the comb to and within a garment pocket, means pivotally mounting an end of the clip on an end of the comb, whereby the clip may assume alternative limiting positions, in one of which it lies in proximity to and at one side of the comb and in the other of which it forms an endwise extension from and a handle for the comb, and means 5 on the comb for positively establishing both of said limiting positions, the free end portion ofthe clip being diverged from the plane oi the comb to facilitate engagement with a garment pocket.
2. An article of the character described, comprising a pocket comb, an elongated spring clip disposed; exteriorly of the comb for securing the comb to and within a garment pocket, means pivotaily mounting an end'of the clip on an end of the comb, whereby the clip may assume alter native limiting positions, in one of which it lies in proximity to and at one side of the comb and in the other of which it forms an endwise extension from and a handle for the comb, and a lug.
integrally formed on the comb and overhanging the pivotal end of the clip-and engageable by the clip in each of said limiting positions to definitely establish such positions, the free end portion of the clip being diverged from the plane of the comb to facilitate engagement with a garment pocket.
3. An article of the character described, as set forth in claim 1, the clip being formed of sheet metal and being serrated to serve as a nail file, when extended from the comb.
4. An article of the character described, as set forth in claim 1, the pivotal end of the clip lying in close proximity to a surface determined by a side oi the comb, and the clip being oifset my fromsuch surface adjacent to said pivotal end. and being gradually convergent toward said surface from said oilset, and closely approaching said surface in relatively close proximity to the free end of the clip. the free end portion of the clip, being divergent to said surface.
5. An article of the character described, comprising a pocket comb, an elongated spring clip disposed exteriorly of the comb for securing the comb to and within a garment pocket, means pivotally mounting an end of the clip on an end of the comb, whereby the clip may assume alternative limiting, positions, in one of which it lies in proximity to and at one side of the comb and in the other of whichit forms an endwise extension from and handle for the comb, and a lug integrally formed on the comb and overhanging the pivotal end of the clip and engaged by go said means pivotally mounting the clip, and'ena a garment pocket.
