Description
Feb. 29, 1944. L. LEVY SHIRT COLLAR AND CUFF TYPE OF EDGE' Filed April 7, 1942 LIUNEL LEV Patented Feb. 29, 1944 SHIRT COLLAR AND CUFF TYPE OF EDGE Lionel Levy, Toledo, Ohio 1 Claim.
This invention relates to edge finishing of textile garments, especially for dress apparel.
This invention has utility when incorporated in form-holding ply edges such as for collars utility for holding in shape as laundered and withstanding wear and re-laundering in maintaining the initial attractive appearance and set.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a shirt disclosing collar and cuff assembly, parts being broken away; i
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a set of plies as adapted for trim edge hereunder in the initial placing thereof and Fig. 3 is a section of the folding for finishing and completion edge set-'up hereunder.
Article of apparel or shirt I is herein shown having attached collar 2 and attached cufi 3. Whether or not attached, under the invention herein the collar or cuff body may have outer plies 4, 5, say of similar fine weave or exterior finish fabric, whether plain or. colored. Between this pair of plies 4, 5, there maybe a more open weave intermediate ply 6. As more porous it may be a holder of a so-called fusing ingredient, and with a coarser thread and weave there may be thereby imparted form or shape retaining properties. Accordingly hereunder this may be in the so-called starched'type of collar and cuff.
In carrying out this invention, the ply 4 is folded at a bend line portion 1 about the free ends 8 of the ply B and 9 of the ply 5. This brings a fold back portion ill of this ply 4 against the ply 5 to have this ply 4 end at its fray edge ii. This fold may be anchored by a stitchin [2. The extent of this fold I is such as to de-v termine the desired degree or extent for the ing ply 8 has bend l and the ply 5, a bend it,
enclosed by this outer finishing edge l4 about the free or fray edge ll of this ply 4. This ply 4 from the free edge II has its portion 10 lie "along the ply 5 to the bend I with an outer Application April 7, 1942, Serial No. 438,013
portion ll, of the ply 4 connecting this bend l with the bend or finishing edge l4. As so folded, a stitching l8 may be adjacent the stitching i2 in holding assembled in thereby determining the finishing edge for this article of apparel of collar or cuff type. This finishing or completion is desirably with the stitching l8 not going to corner I9 of the collar 2, thereby to have the corner IQ of a permanence against initial fraying. Instead of single stitching l8 there may be supplemental stitching 20,'herein shown in the cuff 3.
Experience hereunder has been that this single ply at the exposed limiting edge I4 has a substantial rigidity with a tendency to prolong or increase the resistance to laundering and wear against the collar fraying out at this wide or relatively thick fold; while the thin folds are away from the edge, say at the bend I. The free or fray edges are all housed or enclosed. The more abrupt bend l is protected because it is away from the exposed wear edge l4. In the ply assembly there is not a cumbersome edge resulting but one which readily irons or smooths flat, or takes the contour desired, and retains such in wear. Accordingly, it is a factor contributing to maintenance of cleanly and sightly appearance for the article of apparel as in position on the wearer.
. What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
For the finished edge .of an article of woven collars and cuffs adapted to be laundered, said article comprising a pair of'outer plies and an intermediate ply to form a three-ply body, one outer and the intermediate ply having edge ends therealong'concealed by folding the other outer ply th'ereover thereby to form a four-ply region, the edge end of which folded over outer ply is concealed by folding such inward in bringing the four-ply region against the three-ply adjacent body, and'stitching to assemble the plies in'toa seven-ply finished edge wherein one of the outer plies conceals the three edge ends and constitutes three plies and the total exposure of such edge along the article.
