E. CADOUS Y EYE PAD HOLDER AND SLEEPING SHIELD Filed May 29 194s HTTORNE Patented Feb. 29, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Esther Cadous, New York, N. Y.
Application May 29, 1943, Serial No. 488,985
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an eye pad holder and sleeping shield and has for an object to provide a holder for a medicated eye pad.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a holder of the above type which is neat and pleasing in appearance, which is adapted to receive a preformed medicated eye pad, and which includes means for preventing the liquid medicant from dripping out of the pad.
Various other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed. I
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention are pointed out more particularly in the claim appended hereto, the invention itself may be better understood by referring to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which a specific embodiment thereof has been set forth for purposes of illustration.
In the drawing;
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an eye pad holder embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the position of the holder with respect to the eye;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 showing the holder used as a sleeping shield without the medicant pad; and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the holder showing the inside construction thereof.
In the following description certain specific terms are used for convenience in referring to various details of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that these terms are to be given as broad an interpretation as the state of the art will permit.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the invention is shown as comprising a pair of shields l which conform to the general contour of the face around the eyes. The shields l0 are made in rights and lefts which correspond respectively to the right and left side of the face of the wearer;
Each of the shields IE1 is formed with an outwardly pressed pocket H to receive a medicant holder 20. The pocket I I is formed with a curved outer surface l2 terminating in a bottom lip I3 which extends in a somewhat downwardly inclined direction to provide a retaining surface for securing the medicant holder in place.
The two shields ID are shown as joined together by a flexible strap l5 which may be cemented thereto. The shields are padded around their periphery with a soft padding [6 for purposes of comfort and also to prevent light from reaching the eyes. A pair of straps iii are provided for securing the shields in place on the head of the wearer. These straps extend through slots l9 formed at the ends of each shield.
The shields l0 may be made of rigid material such as thin plastic composition or a stiff, treated cloth, or the pockets ll may be made of plastic and the remainder of the shield of cloth for lightness and comfort.
If desired the strap l5 may be made of a spring material for normally causing the shields Ill to grip the head of the wearer, in which case the straps I 8 may be omitted. The straps l8, if used, may be secured over the ears for holdin the shields in place.
A rigid medicant holder 20 having a general contour similar to that of the pocket II, and carrying a preformed medicant pad 2|, is provided with a lower lip 22 which conforms to the lip l3 of the pocket I l and with a flange 23 which extends through a slit M in the shield. The medicant holder may be made of a light plastic material which is sufficiently rigid to support the medicant pad 2| without deformation.
The medicant holder 20 is positioned within the pocket II by first passing the flange 23 through the slit l4 and then snapping the lip 22 over the lip l3 of the shield. The plastic materials from which the shield and holder are formed are sufiiciently resilient to permit the medicant holder to be thus snapped in place and to secure the holder in position. The medicant pad and holder may thus be renewed as desired. The inclined lip 22 of the medicant holder serves to retain any moisture which may separate from the medicant pad and prevents the same from draining out of the shield.
In certain instances the holder 20 may be omitted and the medicant pad placed directly in the pocket ll of the shield. In that event, the lip l3 serves to retain moisture within the shield.
The contour of thepockets II should be such that no part thereof protrudes to the side so as to interfere with the wearer when sleeping or lying onthe side.
When the holder is positioned over the eyes reaching the eyes, as for example, after certain illnesses where the eyes must be carefully shielded from light, or for shielding the eyes for sleeping in the daylight. Various other uses will be apparent to a person skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
An eye pad holder comprising a pair of individual eye shields conforming in general to the contour of the face around the eyes, flexible securing means securing said shields together, said shields having pockets formed therein suited to receive medicant pad holders, said pockets hav ing downwardly inclined lower lips and medicant pad holders conforming to said pockets and having inclined lower lips to engage and rest upon the lower lips of said pockets and flanges opposite said lips, slits in said shields receiving said flanges and cooperating with said lower lips to hold said medicant pad holders in place, said lips being shaped to snap into holding engagement when said flange is inserted in said slit and being inclined to an extent to prevent moisture from the medicant pads from dripping over. the face of the wearer.
