GARMENT AND BUST SUPPORTING LINING THEREFOR Filed Jan. 16, 1943 mmvroxs Z e/za F'reed BY Jean Freed g f Patented F eb. 8, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE GARMENT AND BUST SUPPORTING LINING THEREFOR Zena Freed and Jean Freed, New'York, N. Y. Application January 16, 1943, Serial No. 472,546
Claims.
This invention relates to womens wearing apparel and has particular reference to a one-piece outer garment provided with a form fitting lining encircling the body and affording a support for the bust of the wearer.
The invention relates generally to garments of the type which are constructed to provide freedom of movement of the wearer and which are usually sleeveless, have a low cut back and are without a lining such as sun suits, play suits and bathing suits. Such garments are either loose fitting or are made of material that is stretchable so that the same will not afford a support for the bust of the wearer. It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a one-piece outer garment of the aforesaid character with a form fitting lining which is so constructed and arranged and affixed to the outer garment in such a manner as to snugly fit the upper portion of the body and provide an adequate support for the bust of the wearer while permitting freedom of movement.
The invention further comprehends the combination of a garment of the indicated character and an inelastic lining including a band and contiguous gore sections sewed to the upper edge of the band, the gore sections being stitched to the garment along the arm openings and formed with seams extending upwardly from the band to provide a fullness for receiving the bust of the wearer andsaid band encircling the garment adjacent to and above the waist for retaining the lining in bust supporting relation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to thefollowing specification and accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred form of the invention.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a rear view of a sun suit, play suit, bathing suit or the like. i
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference A designates a womens garment such as a sun suit, play suit, bathing suit or the like which may be provided with a skirt afiixed thereto or the same may be without the skirt. The garment isv fashioned ofeither stretchable or nonstretchable material, which is of such a character as to be incapable of affording the necessary support for the bust of the wearer. The garment while not necessarily restricted thereto is preferably of the low back, sleeveless type and as stated hereinbefore whether made of stretchable or non-stretchable material is inherently incapable of providing the proper support for the bust of the wearer and hence the present invention resides in the provision of a bust supporting in relative position with lining therefor designated by the reference character B. The lining B is made as a separate member consisting of a waist encircling band Ill, the opposite ends H and I2 of which are disposed adjacent the medial portion of the rear of the garment immediately below and concealed by the upper edge portion of the back.
The end I l of the band has secured thereto an elastic terminal piece 13 provided with a hook M for engagement with an eye l5 carried by the opposite end l2. The band has secured thereto a bodice composed of a pair of upstanding front gore sections l6l6 and a pair of side gor sections ll-l'l. The front gore sections l6 are secured to each other at the upstanding adjacent inner side edges while the remaining outer side edges thereof are secured respectively to'the upstanding forward edges of the side gore sections H. The lower edges of the front gore sections intermediate the length of each is formed with a dart I 8 providing the same with the necessary fullness at the medial portions thereof so as to snugly fit the contour of the bust to properly support the same.
Intermediate the length of the front gore sections I 6 at the juncture thereof the same are provided with a series of tucks I9 to further provide the proper restriction at the central portion to cause the front gore sections to separately fit the busts. The side gore sections I! extend rearwardly around and within the back of the garment and the upper edges 20 of the said sections follow the contour of the upper edge of the garment back. The upper edges 2| of the front gore sections l6 are disposed below the upper edge of the front of the garment neck and are then cut downwardly and outwardly'at an angle as'at 22 and terminate in a concaveportion 23 at each side which follow the curvature of the arm openings of the garment. The upper edges of the side gore sections at the forward portions thereof are also concave as at 24 and then extend at a slight upward inclination as at 25 where they join with the edges 20 at each side respectively.
The bodice ofthe lining B is secured to the garment A by lines of stitching 26 which extend throughout the length of the upper edges 20, 24 and 25 of the side gore sections I1 and the angularly cut and concave edges 22 and 23 of the front gore sections IS. The remaining forward upper edges of the front gore sections are loose or unsecured so that the upper edges fit the upper portion of the bust of the wearer while allowing relative freedom of movement of the upper edge portion of the front of the garment.
The band in is tacked to the garment A by longitudinally spaced vertical lines of stitching 21 adjacent the juncture of the gore sections which retains the waist portion of the garment the lining. The lining B is also provided with shoulder straps 28 attached by stitching to the upper edges 22 of the front gore sections the side gore sections at the juncture of the said edges with the edges 20. In order to retain the shoulder straps in associated relation with and concealed by the shoulder straps of the garment, the straps 28 are secured at longitudinally spaced points to the shoulder straps of the garment by tacking stitching 29. In order to retain the elastic terminal i3 and the end l2 of the band it] in properly located concealed relation below the upper edge of the rear of the garment, a pair of belt loops 3!! are secured within the garment through which loops the terminal i3 and the end 12 of the band are trained. The band I is also tacked to the garment, adjacent the rear ends Ii and 12 thereof by stitching 3| and if desired the same may be tacked to the garment by stitches 32 intermediate the tacking stitches 2'! and 3|.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that a women's garment such as a sun suit, play suit, bathing suit or the like has been devised in which a non-stretchable lining is utilized and attached in such a manner as to confine and properly support the bust of the wearer so as to bring out the natural contour of the same, while the lower edge of the lining is secured by spaced stitching to insure a smooth fit of the suit at the waist.
