I Claim.
This invention relates to bolts as used on double or folding doors. At present the ordinary construction of bolts for double or folding doors is not satisfactory. Generally one half of the door is secured in closed position by bolts operated by the hand pull or push method while the other half of the door is provided with the ordinary type of door lock.
The main object of the present invention is to provide one half of the door with a bolt or bolts that will become locked or fastened when the other half of the door is pushed into closed position, and release the bolt or bolts when this half of the door is opened. The device is cheap to manufacture and simple in design, and will afford a much desired convenience with reference to double doors wherever used. Other objects and advantages appear in the description.
By referring to the drawing, part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. 1 is a front elevation of double doors; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 looking in the direction as shown in Fig. 4 at line 2-2; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 looking in the direction as shown in Fig. 4 at line 3-3; Fig. 4 is a top plan of doors in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a front view of bolt base and bolt assembly; Fig. 6 is a side view in part section as shown on line 66 of Fig. 5; and Fig. '7 is a side view as shown on line 1-1 of Fig. 5.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Again referring to the drawing it will be seen that the double doors are indicated by l and 2. The doors are supported in the regular way on hinges 5 attached to door casing 12. In the center the doors are provided with any suitable latch or lock indicated by 3 and 4. The present invention has a base 6 with a removable cover 1 held on by a screw l5. The bolt member comprises a main extension tongue 9 integral with a lever arm 9a and a shaft 14 mounted in two U shaped holders l3 that allow the shaft to move up and down to extend and withdraw the bolt portion. The bolt member is pulled to unlocked or unbolted position by means of a coil spring II. A bracket 8 is attached to the base 6 to afford means for cover 1 to be held on by screw [5. Fastened to the inner face edge of door 2 is a bracket shaped like a shelf.
The assembled bolts are attached, one at the top inner face edge of one door, preferably the left door of the pair, and at the bottom inner face edge of the same door. The small shelflike brackets are placed on the inner face edge of the other door, top and bottom, to coordinate with the bolts.
In operation the door with bolts attached is closed first. As the bolts are in drawn back position by the springs the door seats in its proper closed place but unlocked. The other door is then closed and as it nears its seat the small shelf-like brackets come into contact with the arms of the bolts and the upper bolt is pushed upward and the lower bolt is pushed downward. This movement is clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7, especially in Figure 7 where the end of lever or arm 9a is contacted by shelf bracket l0 and carried inward and upward as the door is pushed to its seat thereby placing the bolt tongue in looking position. The two doors become latched by the ordinary means indicated by 3 and 4 or by any suitable key lock and remain closed. To open the doors the latch 3-4 is turned to release, the door with latch part 3 is opened, its movement outward releases shelf-bracket pressure on bolt arms, the springs pull the bolts out of locked position, and thus both doors are opened without the operator having to manipulate any part but the ordinary latch located in the center of the doors.
The right is reserved to manufacture the device out of any material best suited for the purpose.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the precise and exact details of structure but reserve the right to make any and all modifications and changes so long as I remain within the spirit and scope of the following claim.
Having described my invention I claim:
A securing structure for double doors comprising a base member having a cover and including a pair of U-shaped bearings mounted on one of said doors, a bolt having a latching head mounted on said base and adapted to cooperate with a bracket mounted on the inner face edge of the companion door, means on said bolt cooperating with said bearings whereby said bolt has sliding and swinging movement therein, 8. depending extension on said bolt, means normally urging said bolt to retracted position and simultaneously swinging the bolt whereby said extension will project downwardly and outwardly with respect to the door into the path of movement of said bracket when the companion door is open, said bracket being so disposed upon the companion door that as the latter comes into contact with said extension, it will engage the end thereof and force it upwardly and inwardly thereby causing the bolt head to draw in and retain the door in closed position.
