Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,392, dated March 29, 1859.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL READ, of the town of Hamilton, in the county of Madison and State et Newv York, have invented a new and useful Machine t'or the Purpose of Drying Clothes; and I hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the upper portion when folded. Fig. 3 is the standard. Fig. is a perspective View of one of the arms. Fig. is a metallic brace and catch united.

H H is the head block which rests upon the standard seen in Fig. 3, to the base ot which head block thev arms A, C, D, seen in Fig. l is attached and upon the top Whereot' is elevated the short square standard (a 2') te the top of which the said metallic braces and catches combined are attached.

The figures l, 2, 9, 4, 5, G, 7, 8, 9, l0, l1, 12 represented in Fig. l are the cord or rope passing through holes in the arms A, B, C, I) upon which articles to be dried are hung.

E, F, G, in Fig. l represents the metallic braces and catches combined which holds the arms above described to their place, when spread or expanded for use.

To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and application.

The said arms are constructed ot Wood and are usually made about 7 feet in length, and at the bottom 2 inches by l', and at the top 135 inches by j ot an inch-and which are fastened to the said head block by small iron bolts With heads so that said arms can easily turn shutting up as seen in Fig. 2, or expanding as seen in Fig. l. Said head block is made of firm Wood about 3 inches square and Which has a hole in the center of the bottom into which the iron pin seen on the top of the standard in Fig. 3 enters so as to be tree to easily and readily turn around--l T he said metallic latch and brace combined (E, F, G,) Fig. l, and represented separately and alone in Fig. 5, is made of cast iron and is about 9% inches in length and about 2 inches in Width, and flat upon the sides and about *1- inch in thickness, and through the center of which is an open space of about T1; an inch across as seen in Fig. 5, and are bolted by a small iron bolt to the top of i) as seen in Fig. l so as to readily turn upon the bolt, said bolt for that purpose being constructed with a tlat head. and the other end is fastened to the side of each of 4said arms by a flat headed bolt, which freely slides up and down the said open space, in shutting and expanding said arms, and which bolt when said arms are expanded slides into the catch at the lower end and holds the arms expanded rmly in their place, and Which is pushed out of the catch by the hand in shutting- All other consideration of construction are suggested from an inspection of Fig. l.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination and arrangement of the standard With the arms, A, B, C, I), the standard i z' and braces E, F, Gr, substantially as for the purposes specified.
