Description

(Modem G.W. B-AKBB;. Attachment Holder and Adjuster for Sewing Machines.
No. 233,911. Patented Nov. 2, I880.
INVEN'MR WITNESES %%%4W- NJEI'EBS. PHOTQ-LITNOGHAPHER, WASHINGTON D O wire Eric.
ATENT GEORGE W. BAKER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WHITE SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT HOLDER AND ADJUSTER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,911, dated November 2, 1880. Application filed May 7, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BAKER, of Uleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment Holders and Adjusters for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for use in connection with sewing-machines for facilitating the application and adjustment of the various attachments for hemming, binding, &c.,
that are employed; and it consists of the de vice hereinafter described, constructed to be adjustably attached to the head or face plate of a sewing-machine, and also constructed to admit of the ready and secure insertion of any attachment suitably constructed to operate in connection therewith.
In the drawings, Figure l is an isometric view of my device. Fig. 2 represents my device as applied to the head of a sewing-machine, and having a heinmer attachment adjusted upon it.
The elbow A has itsupright arm provided with a longitudinal slot, A, whereby a set screw, A may secure said elbow in vertical adjustment to a sewing-machine head-plate. The horizontal arm of the elbow is formed on the upper extremity of the vertical arm A, whose lower extremity is provided with holder B. This holder consists of avertical plate having horizontal flanges B projecting, respectively, from its upper and lower edges. Aretainingtongue, 0, depends from this vertical arm A and overhangs the face of the holder.
A clamping-screw, O, is adapted to Vary the tension of the tongue, and has thread-engagement with a socket, 0 formed in arm A It will be seen by the use of my device just mentioned all, or nearly all, of the various attachments used in connection with sewing-machines may be so constructed as to be susceptible of easy and accurate adjustment without any care or skill on the part of the operator, inasmuch as all that is necessary to do would be to once properly adjust the elbow A, after which any attachment placed Within the holder B will always be accurately located. All that would be necessary to do in changing attachments would be to loosen the binding-screw 0, remove the attachment from the holder 0, and replace it with any other attachment to be used.
What I claim is- 1. In an attachment holder and adjuster for sewing-machines, the combination, with an arm adapted to be connected to a sewing-machine head-platc, and having a holder secured to its lower extremity, of a retaining-tongue depending from the arm and overhanging the face of said holder, substantially as set forth.
2. In an attachmentholder and adjuster for sewing-machines, the combination, with an arm adapted to be connected to a sewing-machine head-plate, and having a holder secured to its lower extremity, said holder being provided with a horizontal flange projecting from its lower edge, of a retaining-tongue depending from the arm and overhanging the face of the holder, substantially as set forth.
3. In an attachment holder and adjuster for sewing-machines, the combination, with an arm adapted to be connected to a sewing-machine head-plate, and having a holder secured to its lower extremity, of a retaining-tongue depending from the arm and overhanging the face of the holder, and a clamping-screw adapted to adjust the tension of said tongue, substantially as set forth.
4. In an attachment holder and adjuster for sewing-machines, the combination, with an arm adapted to be connected to a sewing-machine head-plate, and having a holder secured to its lower extremity, of a retaining-tongue depending from the arm and overhanging the face of the holder, said holder being formed as a vertical plate having horizontal flanges projecting, respectively, from its upper and lower edges, substantially as set forth.
5. An attachment holder and adjuster for sewing-machines consisting in the combination, with a vertical arm having its lower eX- ment to a sewing-machine head-plate, snbstan- 1o tremity provided with a plate, the upper and tially as set forth. lower edges of said plate being formed with In testimony whereof I have signed my horizontal flanges, of a retaining-tongue dename to this specification in the presence of 5 pending from the arm and overhanging the two subscribing witnesses.
face of the holder, said vertical arm having GEORGE W. BAKER. its upper extremity provided with an elbow, \Vitnesses: the upright arm of which has a longitudinal L. L. LEGG-ETT,
slot for securing said device in vertical adjust- I JNo. OROWELL, Jr.
