IMPROVEMENT |N BUTTON-HOLE ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,106, dated October 26, 1875; application filed September 2, 1875.

Button-hole attachments have been madefor sewing-machines, such as seen in Letters Patent No. 103,745, granted May 31, 1870;

but this has been attached to the arm by a clamp that did not easily determine the exact position of the attachment. Hence only an experienced person could apply such button- .hole attachment, and properly adjust the same.

My invention is made for removing this difficulty, and allowing the attachment to be removed or reapplied with rapidity and accuracy.

In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the apparatus complete. Fig. 2 is a plan of the attaching-arm separately; and Fig. 3 is {an elevation of the upper end of the needle- The under side of the arm a is planed or milled oft flat, and the body I) of the connecting-bracket c is flat upon its upper side. In the portion b of the bracket are holes large enough to pass the said bracket up over the screw-heads e e,- and from these holes there are slots extending toward the needle portion of the machine, so that the bracket will be passed over the screw-heads, and then slipped along away from the needle, in order that the jar and concussion in operating the buttonhole attachment may not in any manner tend to move the bracket. The screws 0 e are tightened after the bracket. is in place, and hold the same firmly t0 the arm a.

At one side of the bracket the button-hole attachment is connected. This being constructed and operated as in aforesaid patent, does not require further description; but, in order to adjust the entire apparatus accurately, the'horizontal screws ff pass through holes in c, that are larger than the bodies-0t the screws; but, the heads being large and flat, the said screws firmly clamp the parts when accurately adjusted to position.

The thread-guide. h is upon the movable head-pieced at the upper end of the needlebar, and it is held by the screw 1, that passes into the hole ordinarily provided for such thread-guide, and from the arm of the headpiece the connecting-rod m passes down to and moves the button-hole attachment.

I claim as my invention- 1. The bracket 1) 0, provided with holes and slots for the screws 6 e, and adapted to be held by such screws removably to the under side of the arm a, in combination with the button-hole attachment and the screws ff, for holding and adjusting the same upon the bracket, as set forth.

2. The removable head-block 6, provided with the thread-guide h and the needle-bar, in combination with the link m and the button-hole attachment, as specified.
