SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, JOHN HUDSON, of Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sewing machine attachments andmore particularly to improved presser foot and guide devices, the object of my present invention being to simplify the construction of such devices; to facilitate their ready application and removal; to permit of their easy and accurate adjustment and their retention in the positions to which they may be adjusted, and to insure accuracy of operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application of my improvements to a sewing machine; Fig.
is a perspective view of the presser-foot and guide devices, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views illustrating modifications.
Heretofore, presser feet for sewing machines have been provided with bifurcated arms or brackets projecting rearwardly therefrom, and applied to the presser bar from the front, resulting in inconvenience to the operator on account of hindrance offered by the needle and other adjacent parts and often necessitating breaking of the thread to enable the applicationror removal of such presser foot, especially when the latter also carries other attachments. To obviate such inconvenience, I so construct the attaching means for the presser foot to the presser bar, that it can be applied to the presser bar from the rear, where there will be no obstruction to interfere with its ready application to or removal from the presser bar.

The device is so applied to the presser bar 7 that the fingers 55 will be disposed at respective sides of the shank 8 of said presser bar and so that the head 9 at the lower end of the presser bar will become disposed between the fingers 5 and the upper face of the arm 4 and rest upon the latter. Vhen the nut 10 on the presser bar is screwed down, it will securely clamp the bracket of the foot piece to the presser bar. The slot formed by the fingers 5-5 and the recess formed between said fingers and the arm 4 will permit forward or backward adjustment of the foot piece relatively to the presser bar, with out detracting from the rigidity of the connection of said piece to the presser bar when the nut 10 is screwed down.
When the presser bar to which the foot piece is to be applied is square in cross-section instead of round, said foot piece may be provided with a vertical socket piece, such as shown at 11, Fig. 5, to be applied to the presser bar from the rear, and the sides of this socket piece are provided with elongated slots for the passage of a fastening screw,- said slots permitting the same forward or backward adjustment of the foot piece hereinbefore described. The foot piece being appreciably narrower than the bracket 2, the needle will be disposed at one side of the foot piece and may be located in close proximity thereto.
The foot piece 1 is provided with a spring presser foot or member 12, which may be conveniently made of a strip of flat spring metal bent into approximately U-shape. The upper member 13 of this spring is secured upon the foot piece 1 and its lower member 14, which projects backwardly from the free end of said foot piece, is free at one end and bears with yielding pressure upon the goods being sewed.
The free end of the upper member 13 of the spring foot member is made with a lip 15 to engage a horizontal bar 16 extending across the foot piece 1, and the tension with which this lip engages the bar may be adjusted by means of a screw 17. The bar 16 is provided in its upper face near its respective edges with grooves 18, in one or the other of which, the head of a screw or projection 17 on the upright portion 3 of the bracket 2, is adapted to enter. The bar 16 carries a guide 19 at one end, and by means of the spring lip 15, this bar is held frictionally in any position relatively to the foot piece, to which it may be adjusted to dispose the guide at any desired distance from the foot piece. The engagement of the lip and screw head at or near opposite edges of the bar and engagement of the bar with the fiat upright portion of the bracket, will insure retention of said bar firmly on the foot piece and prevent it from lateral or other displacement, so that the guide will be maintained always parallel with the foot piece. The guide 19 is made double ended so that it may be used at either side of the foot piece, reversal of the guide being effected by reversing the position of the bar 16 on the foot piece, as will be readily understood.
For the accommodation of the guide 19, a slotted post 20 is provided at one end of the bar 16, said guide being provided with a shank 21 entering said slotted post. To this shank a screw 22 is swiveled, said screw passing freely through a hole in the upper end of the post and provided above the latter with a nut 23 adapted to bear upon the top of the post. By these means the guide may be adjusted vertically. Spring pressure for the guide is provided by means of a spring 24:. This spring may be made of a straight piece of wire secured at one end to the bar 16 with its free end engaging the shank of the guide, suitable slots 25 being made in the post 20 for the accommodation of said spring.
In the construction shown in Fig 3, the bar which engages the foot piece and carries the guide, is made in two parts 2627 which receive the foot piece between them, said bar being held in place by the spring lip 15 and projection 17 the same as hereinbefore explained. The lower member 27 of the bar may be slightly curved and will be disposed closely upon the goods, thus facilitating the accurate operation of the devices when accurate work with fine or delicate fabrics, is desired.
In. the construction shown in Fig. 3, the post 28 which carries the guide 19 may be made of sheet metal bent up from the bar members 26-27, and the structure in the post and bar members may be made in a single piece.
In the construction shown in Fig. l structure forming the bar members 2627 and the post 28 may be cast integral with each other, and spring pressure applied to the guide by means of a coiled spring 29 located within the post. If desired a clamping screw 30 may be PI'OXlClBd near the free ends of the bar members.
In the construction shown in Fig. 55, teeth 31 are substituted for the screw head or pro ection 1'? to enter the grooved portion of the bar.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is V 1. The combination with a presser foot piece having a bracket, of a spring presser foot member secured. to and spaced from the bottom face of the presser foot piece, said presser foot member terminating at one end over the presser foot piece in a spring lip, a bar mounted transversely on the presser foot piece in front of the bracket and engaged at its forward edge portion by the lip on the spring presser foot, and a guide carried by said bar.
2. The combination with a presser foot piece provided with a bracket, of a bar mounted transversely on said presser foot piece in front of said bracket, a guide carried by said bar, a spring lip upon the presser foot piece having frictional engagement with said bar near 'the front edge thereof and a projection on said bracket and engaging said bar near its rear edge.
3. The combination with a presser foot piece provided at one end with a bracket, of a bar mount-ed transversely on said foot piece and having grooves near its respective edges, a guide carried by said bar, a spring lip secured to'thefoot piece and having frictional engagement with said bar, and a projection on the bracket and entering one or the other of the grooves in the bar.
4:. The combination with a. presser foot piece provided at one end with a bracket. of a bar mounted transversely on said foot piece, a spring lip on the foot piece engaging said bar near one edge, a projection on the bracket engaging said bar near its other edge, a post at one end of said bar, a guide carried by said post, means for adjusting the guide vertically, and a spring secured to the bar and engaging said guide to press it downwardly.
