HENRY BORCHERT, OF AURORA, MINNESOTA.
ONE-WHEEL PLOW.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 4No. 233,722, dated October 26, 1880.
Application led J une 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY BoEcEER'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Steele and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OneWheel Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail to show the tilting bar or lever and its connection with the tongue or shaft. Fig. 3 shows the hinging of the pole and lever.
This invention relates to that class of devices known as one-wheel plows, and the novelty consists in the combination of the lever, plowbeam, and tongue, and in the general construction and arrangement of the device as a whole, all as will now he more fully set out and explained.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the plow, secured ou and to the end of the axle B in any usual or ordinary way or manner. At the opposite end of said axle is properly attached, in any suitable way, the wheel G,in such a manner that it can be readily attached or detached, raised or lowered, and securely held in place.
The foot-board D is fastened at one end to the axle and extends forward nearly as far -as the front end of the plow-beam a, and is there secured-to and upon beam or bar E, which is, at its other end, secured upon the front part of the plow-beam, but so that it will project over and beyond it. The drivers seat F is mounted or fixed on the foot-board D at any desired point and in any usual way. On this beam or bar E, between the plowbeam and the foot-board, are placed boxes e e, in which is journaled a shaft or rod, e, and to one end of this is fastened the tongue G and to the other the lever H, the handle of which can be easily grasped by the driver,
In this connection both shaft and lever will have motion on the shaft or rod e', and this can be given by moving the said lever up or down. This movement of the lever is also communicated through the plow-beam to the tip of the plow. Thus the plow-tip can, by
(No model.)
raising the said lever, be lifted up, so that it will not take the ground as itis being moved over it: or on lowering the said lever the plow-tip will be caused to take the ground.
If desired to retain the tip of the plow in its upward incline, the end of the lever can be xed on the standard b, which extends up from the axle B.
The severalparts will be very sensitive to the movements of the lever H by reason of the peculiar relation itsfulcrum has to the forward end of plow-beam a and the rear end of the'pole G, as it will be observed they all come in nearly the same horizontal line.
1f desired, a brace, h, extending from the lever-joint to the tongue, may be used. This will add in some degree to the strengthening of the parts. Y
In the drawings illustration is given of the device as used with two horses; but it is very evident that by a mere change of the parts provisions can be easily made for using three` horses.
My invention furnishes a supply for a need long felt in this class of plowsin providing, in a compact, simple, cheap, and strong device, a driving-plow that can be made to take the ground or can be kept out of it with as much ease and certainty as a plow managed by the two hands of the farmer who walks behind it..
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
1. In a onewheel plow, the combination of beam or bar E, having boxes c and shaft or rod c', with lever H, xed to one end of said rod, and tongue G, fixed to the other end of said rod, and plow-beam a, substantially as 'and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of plow A, axle B, wheel C, and foot-board D with beam or bar E, boxes c, and shaft or rode', and tongue G, jointed thereby at or near the forward end of tongue a, and lever H, hinged to the beam E about on a line with the rear end of G and forward end of tongue @substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

H. SCHMIDT, JOHN D. ROLAND.
