PENCIL SIRPENERv Filed Feb. 1'?, 1945 CCC Patented Dec. 14, 1943 `UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE PENCHL SHARPENER William H. McCauley, Jr., Philadelphia, Pa. Application February 17, 1943, Serial No. 476,217
(Cl. 1Z0-87) Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil Sharpeners and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of this character which is adapted to be expeditiously mounted and left permanently on a pencil until said pencil has been used up, after which the sharpener may be conveniently transferred to a new pencil.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a pencil Sharpener of the aforementioned character comprising a unique construction and arrangement of cutting elements.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener of the character described embodying novel means for rotatably securing the device on a pencil,
Other objects ci the invention are to provide a pencil sharpener of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein- Figure l is a view in vertical section through a pencil Sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View, taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail View in elevation of the spiral sharpening member.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a cone of a suitable plastic material, which cone is designated by reference character Il.
Embedded in the interior of the plastic cone I4 is a spiral metallic strip I5. Cutting teeth I5 are stru-ck inwardly from the spiral strip I5, said teeth leaving openings Il in said strip. Tangential openings E3 in the plastic cone I are aligned with the openings Il. This is shown in advantage in Figure 2 or the drawing.
Fixed in the plastic cone I4 at the top of the spiral strip l5 is a cylindrical ring I9. Struck inwar ly from the cylindrical ring IS is a spiral series of teeth 2! which are arranged alternately as seen in Figure 3 of the drawing for preventing retrograde rotation of the cone I 4 on the pencil and for preventing said cone from slipping off said pencil.
The tip portion 2| of the plastic cone It has formed therein a bore 22 which accommodates the lead 3 of the pencil. A lead pointer or cutter 23 is provided in the cone I4 at the lower end of the spiral strip I5.
In the use of the invention, the plastic cone i@ is applied to the writing end of the pencil 2 and manually turned in a clockwise direction. The teeth I6 cut or shave the end portion of the pencil, the cuttings or shavings passing out through the openings Il and i8, The dogs 20 bite into the pencil for securing the cone Ill against retrograde rotation and for preventing said cone from slipping off the pencil. As the sharpening progresses, the point or lead passes through and projects from the bore 22.
lt is believed that the many advantages of a pencil Sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, whatI claimed as new is:
1. A pencil Sharpener of the character described comprising a cone rotatably engageable with the writing end portion of a pencil, a spiral series of cutting teeth projecting tangentially into the cone for cutting the pencil upon rotation of said cone thereon, said cone having openings therein adjacent the teeth for the discharge of shavngs, a cylindrical ring at the large end of the cone for the passage oi the pencil, and a spiral series of dogs struck inwardly fro-m the ring and adapted to bite into the pencil, certain of said dogs being arranged for preventing retrograde rotation oi the cone on the pencil, the remaining dogs being arranged to secure the cone against slipping off the writing end of the pencil.-
2. A pencil Sharpener of the character described comprising a metallic cone rotatably engageable on the writing end portion of a pencil, said cone comp-rising a tip including an inturned tube for the passage or" the lead of the pencil, pointing cutters for the lead adjacent the inner end of the sleeve, spiral series of teeth struck inwardly from the cone for cutting the pencil upon rotation of said cone thereon, said cone having openings therein adjacent the teeth for the discharge of shavings, a cylindrical ring on the large end of the cone,` dogs struck inwardly from said ring and adapted to bite into the pencil for securing the cone thereon, a hollow turning knob integral with the ring and encircling the pencil, and resilient tongues on said knob for frictionally gripping the pencil.
3. A pencil Sharpener of the character described comprising a plastic cone rotatably engageable with the writing end portion of a pencil, a spiral metallic strip embedded in the interior of the cone, tangential teeth Struckfinwardlyirom the spiral metallic stripleaving openings therein, the cone having tangential openings therein aligned with the first-named openings for the discharge of Shavings from the pencil, and means for retaining the cone on the pencil.
4. A pencil sharpener of the character described comprising a plastic cone rotatably en-I gageable with the Writing end-portionloffafpencilgi a spiral metallic strip embedded in theinterior of the cone, tangential teeth struck inwardly from the spiral metallic strip leavingopenings there-1v in, the cone having tangential openings-thereinaligned with the rst-named openings for the discharge of shavings from the pencil, and means for retaining the cone on the pencil, said retaining means including a cylindrical ring xed in the large end portion of the cone and adapted to encircle the pencil, and spiral series of dogs struck inwardly from said ring and adapted to bite into the pencil, said dogs being alternately arranged for preventing retrograde rotation of the cone on` the pencil and for preventingvsaid cone from slippinge'oi the Writing-end' of said pencil.
5. A pencil Sharpener of the character described comprising a plastic cone for rotatable engagement with the Writing end portion of a cone-and projecting tangentially therein for cutting the pencilupon rotation of said cone thereoiacylindrical-rin`g in the upper portion of the cone-for encircling the pencil, and dogs struck inwardly from said ring and adapted to bite into thelpe'ncil for -securi'ngthe :cone thereon.
