UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. KEIPER, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN WILLIAM KEIPER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR HITCHING HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,421, dated October 19, 1880.
Application filed March'22, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. KEIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hitching Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top-plan View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cam-lever.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in devices for holding a hitch rein, halter, or other strap of the harness of a horse or horses, and has for its object to construct a simple and effective means for holding such strap securely.
The invention consists in the peculiar manner of connecting together tWopIates, between which the strap is placed and held by a camlever operating with a cam upon the face of the upper plate, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bottom or base plate, ofmetal, having suitable holes for the reception of screws, by which it may be securely attached to any stationary object. The plate Ais provided with a pin, a, to guide an upper plate, B, in its vertical movement and prevent said plate from moving horizontally while being operated to fasten or release the strap. The plate A has rigidly secured to it a rod, 1), over which is loosely placed the plate B, said rod having placed .around it a spiral spring, 0, which has its seats in the upper face of plate A and under face of plate B, the plates being recessed for the purpose of receiving the ends of the spring.
Upon the upper end of the rod 1), and above the plate B, is a cam-lever, O, the face of said 5 cam engaging with a cam, 61, upon the plate B, the leverG being held upon the rod 12 by an offset upon the end thereof.
When the strap, as represented at D, is required to be held, it is placed between the plates A B, and by turning in the proper direction the lever O the cam thereon, in connection with the cam on the plate B, will cause said plate to be tightly and firmly pressed down upon the strap, which firmly holds it between the plates 5 5 and prevents the possibility of its becoming accidentally detached. In detaching the strap or removing it from between the plates the lever is turned in a reverse direction from that in clamping and holding the strap, when the plate B will be automatically raised by the action of the spring 0, admitting of the strap being disconnected from the plates.
Having now fully describedv my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Witnesses:
MosEs B. HARVEY, JOSEPH HARROP.
